Amara Jivana (This Life)

By Shrila Bhaktivinoda Thakura

amara jivana, sada pape rata,

nahika punyera lesha

parere udvega, diyachi je kata,

diyachi jivere klesha (1)

Throughout my whole life I have been addicted to sin, never performing any pious activities. I have simply been a source of disturbance and suffering for others.

nija sukha lagi', pape nahi dari,

daya-hina svartha-para

para sukhe duhkhi, sada mithya-bhashi,

para-duhkha sukha kara (2)

For my own pleasure I never fear to commit any sin. I am devoid of pity and full of selfishness; I'm sorry at others' happiness and am an inveterate liar. Indeed, I take delight in others' miseries.

ashesha kamana, hridi majhe mora,

krodhi dambha-parayana

mada-matta sada, vishaye mohita,

himsa-garva vibhushana (3)

Endless are the selfish desires in my heart. I am prone to anger and devoted to arrogance. Intoxicated by conceit and deluded by attraction to sense pleasure, I ornament myself with pride and envy.

nidralasya-hata, sukarye virata,

akarye udyogi ami

pratishtha lagiya, shathya-acarana,

lobha-hata sada kami (4)

Afflicted by laziness and sleep, adverse to pious activities, I delight to perform any harmful act to obtain name and fame. I am very adept in duplicity, always lusty and degraded by mundane greed.

e hena durjana, sajjana-varjita,

aparadhi nirantara

shubha-karya-shunya, sadanartha-mana,

nana duhkhe jara jara (5)

Being such a miscreant and rejected by saintly persons, I have become a repeated offender. I never do good deeds but am inclined only to bad habits. Thus, I am oppressed by so many miseries.

vardhakye ekhana, upaya vihina,

ta'te dina akincana

bhakativinoda, prabhura carane,

kare duhkha nivedana (6)

Now in old age I am rendered helpless, reduced to a fallen and destitute condition. Bhaktivinoda presents his sad case at the feet of the Lord.

Treat the holy names with love

I read today that the way in which we approach the Holy Names is
indicative of our relationship with Krsna.

I found this very interesting.

It makes sense really as we understand the holy names are non-different
from Krsna.

In this respect we can gaze at the Deity and act out our devotion to
Him, swoon in ecstasy or become stunned into silence.

We can work 24-7 for Krsna and receive plaudits that we are such hard
workers and do sooooo much service.

But what of the way we treat Nama Prabhu?

He has mercifully descended into this dark, miserable material world as
a life line to the spiritual world. He is like an umbilical cord
connected to Krsna that gives us life and sustenance.

Yet when we associate with Him through our japa or kirtan where is our
mind?

What is our mood?

Are we looking to serve Him or be served by Him?

Do we hanker for a drop of taste from the Names or do we acknowledge He
is 'Rasa raja'? The Supreme enjoyer of rasas.

Nama Prabhu is a person - He is Krsna Himself.

Treat Him well and He will treat you well.

The object of our desires is on our lips and we allow the mind to wander
to lesser, coarser pleasures.

Keep dragging it back to the centre - to the names - once we realise
that the holy names are the goal of our practices as well as the means
to get there it will be amazing!

Trust the Holy Names and keep the faith!

Painful removal of anarthas

Sent to you by dinesh via Google Reader:

via Bhava Bhakti devi dasi by Bhava Bhakti dd on 23/12/09

Sometimes we are so stubborn that we cannot see our own anarthas even when repeatedly pointed out by Krsna through His devotees.... this is when the purification process becomes painful - like having your wisdom tooth pulled out by a dentist and it is yanked this way and that way... so painful .... as the tooth refuse...s to come out.... just as we refuse to see our anarthas and thus hamper their removal.

True Humility

Sent to you by dinesh via Google Reader:

via Bhava Bhakti devi dasi by Bhava Bhakti dd on 28/12/09

"Through the practice of devotion to God, I was coming to learn that preserving loving relations in this world required much forgiveness, tolerance, patience, gratitude, and humility. An essential virtue of humility is to accept others for what they are, despite differences. I contemplated again how the tendency to judge others is often a symptom of insecurity, immaturity, or selfishness, and I yearned to rise above it."

Be strong in Krsna's service

Sent to you by dinesh via Google Reader:

via Bhava Bhakti devi dasi by Bhava Bhakti dd on 28/12/09

I find that Krsna Consciousness is not for the faint hearted.

It gets to the core of who you are and yanks away the false ego - our comfort blanket for so long.

We try to become averse to the material world by becoming fanatics in the spiritual world.

But it does not work like that - Krsna Consciousness is a natural revolution of the heart - not an artificial imposition.

And like any natural relationship - it has to be worked at - slowly - respectfully.

We cannot rubber stamp ourselves as Vaisnavas just because we walk the walk and talk the talk ... oh and wear good tilak !

The core of this whole process I am finding is based around RELATIONSHIPS.

Our desire to have them, to avoid them and to control them.

We want to be selfish in deciding who we speak to, how we speak to them and when we do it. But it does not work like that... what about the other person and their free will?

In the spiritual world the objective is to serve the other person regardless of whether we get what we want... in fact our desires are fulfilled when we see the other person happy.

In the material world it is a matter of seeing who strokes my false ego the most and that is my friend -that is my well wisher.

But actually we have to work on ourselves first.

Make the change within and then our interaction, behaviour with others, speech, consciousness will all follow...

A deep subject I feel and one that requires deep friendships to get through.

Krishna, Krishna and Krishna!

The devotee is not interested in the sunrise or the beauty of nature or in the beauty of a person or even in a painting or a work of art. Ultimately, it's all pointing towards the beauty of Krsna.

Everything is the beauty of Krsna and this is truly the pure transcendental platform. This is pure devotional service. It's just Krsna, Krsna and Krsna, and after that, Krsna and Krsna and Krsna! When we finish discussing Krsna, Krsna, Krsna, we can talk a little bit about Krsna! Why not?

This is the Krsna consciousness that is displayed by great, elevated pure devotees. Not the kind of Krsna consciousness that is added on like a little sauce in life, in which we sometimes dip our different experiences to add a little flavour!

To Knead And Shape The Dough

Whatever we go through in our growth, in our development, little by little, we are like chappati dough. Two fists are beating on that dough, kneading the dough and shaping the dough. At first when we come to Krishna Consciousness, we are hard as a rock, and it's very difficult to put us in any shape, but gradually, gradually, by the association of the devotees, we become purified and gradually our heart softens!

The Potency Of Devotional Service

Sent to you by dinesh via Google Reader:

via kksblog.com by Aatish on 5/3/11

Transcribed By Madhumati Devi Dasi

(Kadamba Kanana Swami, Stockholm, 2010)

If one appreciates the potency of devotional service and if one appreciates how powerful it is, and that the tiny little insignificance of material trouble that will strike is totally unimportant.

I saw a cartoon on think tank where a group of people were sitting on a big meeting table and under it, it was written, " A worry tank",
and one said:
"What if something goes wrong?"

And then one said:
"What if nothing goes wrong?!"

So like this we can just worry and worry and that is how we live to worry for nothing at all, because it doesn't make a difference. Oh! No now it is raining and what are we going to do the summer is coming? Well! The same as winter. Somehow or the other, things just keep going on. There is a saying – that there was a Dutch sailor and he said it is too early enough to worry about drowning up until when the water comes up to the lips.

I like that! I am not like that as I worry a little earlier, but I must admit that I remind myself of this sailor and it helps. Yes,there are people who don't worry, and if only we come to the fact that we are Vaikuntha people – the secret is to be in the spiritual world. In the morning when we rise, we should say another day in the spiritual world because that's where we are!

"Not, oh! God why am I in Stockholm? Oh Dear! in the material world – back in my life can I sleep more? Can I just ignore it? Can I act as if I am not awake? Can I just deny it a little longer?"

This negativity – that we have about our life is very deeply rooted in our consciousness, and a Vaikuntha person is one who is free from all worries. Who is free and has no worries?

Australia is a funny Country, because they always say:
"How are you? – no worries. How are you going?"

But it is one of the Countries that has the highest rates of intoxication and drugs and the Australian way of getting intoxicated is to get "Zonked".

So, it goes on quite a bit and in the public bathroom there are white purple lights, so you can't see your veins no matter what, can't see much at all. …."To get zonked and have no worries?"

So, it is not possible to have a life with no worries. It is not possible by declaration. You have worries as long as you identify with the material world.

But, as long as we understand that we are in Vaikuntha and act like that – I am in Vaikuntha when I serve, every moment and we experience it sometimes when we surrender a little bit – we really make a sacrifice and after that we really feel blissful and so nice just for may be half a day, but if we do it all the time, then we will be always be in that Vaikuntha state – the blissful state and when you are in that state Yeah! What do you care? Nothing can touch you! The milk boiled over – okay. Thus, one becomes transcendental, absorbed and relishes the nectar of surrender, the nectar of service that is the spiritual world.

In the Vaikuntha planets the ladies although, living like queens in palaces, they sweep those palaces themselves daily even though there is no dust. Here we say:

"Is there anybody who is going to sweep our floor, when there is no dust?"

Here we need the dust. Just like somebody writes on the dust of the car that, 'I want to be washed!' Here we have the dust to force us to do the service, but in the spiritual world they understand that the purpose of cleaning the floor is to please Krishna. So, floors are meant to be swept and that's what they are meant for and the purpose of sweeping is to serve Krishna. Here the purpose of sweeping is cleaning the dust and without dust we wouldn't clean it.

If we are always absorbed in service to Krishna then everything becomes blissful and positive and that's how Prabhupada had the positive outlook.

Pleasure is an internal experience!

It is impossible to completely eliminate external discomforts. One should
focus on the internal pleasure. Even if one is to completely eliminate all
external discomforts, it would not be enough to produce
happiness<http://www.16rounds.com/tag/happiness/>,
which is an internal experience. One should deal with the external world as
a matter of duty and in that way escape getting attached to the external
comforts which are always followed by external discomfort. The time and
peace thus gained should be used for spiritual cultivation.By attaching
oneself to material pleasure, one is certainly attaching oneself to material
pain! To see this is crucial. Material pain is repulsive and material
pleasure is attractive. However, it is impossible to separate the two. Thus,
acceptance of material pleasure necessitates opening the door to material
pain.

Remembering Srila Prabhupada - Travelling bus program

---------- Forwarded message ----------

Subject: [srilaprabhupadanectar] Remembering Srila Prabhupada -
Travelling bus program

Travelling bus program

In Sydney, tall, red-headed Mohanananda had a vast reservoir of energy
and enthusiasm, as well as substantial entrepreneurial skills. He and
his wife, Sasti, had brought incredible vision and optimism to the
temple, especially since they had just come from the Los Angeles
temple, which was the forerunner in all things new, revolutionary and
exciting in ISKCON. His ideas were endless. Some, like that of staging
a Krsna conscious rock opera -- inspired by Hair -- never left the
ground. Others soared. Devotees enthusiastically embraced his plans to
inaugurate a travelling bus program. "It would be a veritable Hare
Krsna temple-on-wheels," he said.

An old Sydney double-decker bus was soon located. It was in need of a
little repair and substantial refurbishment. But the temple had no
money.

----

Harry was regularly attending the Sydney temple at Glebe, chanting
Hare Krsna, doing a little service, and generally enjoying the
association of the devotees. Still with long hair way past his
shoulders, he was waiting for his friends to arrive back in Sydney so
he could hand over his apartment to them and move into the temple. One
day he chanced to overhear a conversation between Caru and
Mohanananda: the temple was three months in arrears in rent, they'd
found a suitable bus, but it would cost them $1,000 to purchase.

Harry had some money in the bank that he'd saved while working in the
Western Australian mining camp. He stood nearby until Caru and
Mohanananda noticed him.

"What do you want?" asked Mohanananda, eyeing Harry suspiciously.

"Well," replied Harry, "I just heard you talking about money, and I
..well, I've got some money in the bank .."

Caru and Mohanananda listened intently.

"How much money?" asked Mohanananda, trying to sound nonchalant.

"Oh, about $1,500," answered Harry.

Mohanananda leapt in the air shouting "Krsna!" at the top of his
lungs. Then he checked himself and sat down, clearing his throat.

"Where is it?" he asked quietly.

"Oh, it's in the bank. I can bring it tomorrow, if you like."

"Oh, Caru can drive you to the bank right now!"

Harry assured them that it was alright. "I'll bring it in the morning," he said.

The next day, as promised, Harry arrived with his bank book. Caru
drove him to the bank, and as he watched, Harry withdrew all of his
savings and closed the account. Turning to Caru, he happily handed
over the money. The bus was soon purchased.

The devotees worked hard to transform it into a travelling temple. The
seats were removed, both upstairs and down. On the top floor, devotees
laid a white pine-wood floor and varnished it to a mirror finish. An
altar was installed at the front and cooking facilities arranged at
the rear. The lower deck was carpeted, leaving two seats over the back
wheel arches. The windows were curtained throughout. The entire bus
was repainted, the cream and saffron exterior emblazoned with THE HARE
KRISHNA MOVEMENT in large lettering. Below, slightly smaller, it read
THE POSITIVE ALTERNATIVE.

V see d World as reflection of d state of our mind!

Mind wen not trained properly, brings disaster2 1's own self&d people
around.After all,you become wat u think.V c d world as a reflection of
our mind. Our observation of d world/people is not perfect/exactly wat
v c,but ltd by d state of our mind.A drunkard will c everything around
different than 1who's nt.
One best example is Lord Krsna asked Maharaj Yudhistra2find&bring d
worst person in d kingdom&Duryodana2find&bring d best person.
Both came back2Krsna&Yudhistra said out of humility that he cud nt
find any1worse than himself.A person who feels the presence of God
sees his own fault greater than others'&remains humble.
Whereas duryodana said he's d best&he cudnt find any1better than himself.

In d BhagavadGita,LordSriKrsna says,My abode(place-Spiritual planets)
is not illuminated by electricity or fire but is
self-luminant&havingthus attained once,d conditioned souls shall never
return2dis temporary miserable world.Once I had dis doubt,electricity
was invented only by our scientists. How come,Krishna is talking abt
it.So it's not invention but discovery. later I got the intelligence
dat lightning, thunder are all natural sources of hi power
electricity&so electricity is nothing new. Just see how dis modern

Krishna is a thief

When we have material desires my advice is: Get a big box, put all the material desires inside. Just put them all inside, close the box and in big capital letters write on that box: "My material desires!"

Tie it up nicely, put it on the shelf and then get busy in service to Krishna. One day when you don't have so much to do, you think: "Today is the day that I'm going to play with my material desires!"

And you take the old box of the shelf, you look inside the box, and what do you see?

"Half of them gone! Who took my material desires?"

Who do you think took the material desires? Haven't you heard that Krishna is a thief? It is as simple as that. It's not difficult to overcome material desires.

Follow the pure devotee

Sent to you by dinesh via Google Reader:

via kksblog.com by jananivasa on 5/2/11

We are somehow or other fallen by our conditioning and therefore everyone may have some weakness. But it is faith in the pure devotee that can give us the strength to try. We should at least try and not be defeated before we try.

There is a class of people that never go for spiritual life. They have already given up, already defeated before they begin. We should understand that by the mercy of the pure devotee everything is possible. We can get strength, we can get faith, we can get enthusiasm and we can do it!

Therefore we have to make that connection with a pure devotee and try to really follow the instructions of the pure devotee and become a pure devotee ourselves.

Queensday 2011

Sent to you by dinesh via Google Reader:

via kksblog.com by jananivasa on 5/2/11

Queensday! Thousands of people walking through the streets, singing, drinking and celebrating the Queen's birthday in Amsterdam. It was really gross, people getting stoned, drunk and crazy. Sill, led by Kadamba Kanana Swami, a huge group of bold Vaishnavas made their way through the city. A Maha Harinama purified the streets of Amsterdam! The Harinama was intense: Five hours in the morning and another three hours in the evening – eight hours of ecstasy.

Vidyavicaspati Prabhu started with leading the Kirtana from Amsterdam temple to the city. Many of the orange dressed citizens joined in our singing and dancing! Next, Kadamba Kanana Maharaja took over the mike, and sure enough, through his ecstatic kirtana, brought the harinama to an even more intense level. Finally, on Dam square, Sacinandana Swami just went in complete absorption and it seemed, that he had made the whole square dance.

In that way the Harinama went on for the whole day and just showed how powerful and sweet this wonderful process of Harinama Sankirtana is.

You Must Reform

Posted: 02 May 2011 11:22 AM PDT

Japa is an important part of devotional life. If your japa is not up to standard, this is serious. You must reform. That is, out of your regret may come success. Prabhupada used to say, 'Failure is the pillar of success.' Assess yourself, and try to improve your chanting of Hare Krishna.

It wasn't long before the devotees in Sydney and Melbourne were competing to have the nicest temple. Prabhupada approved of the mood:

I am encouraged to hear from you that Melbourne temple is even better than Sydney temple, so I must surely come there to see it. Go on like this, transcendental rivalry, just like San Francisco and Los Angeles. This pleases me very much. But it is not that we are envious! No, material envy is not like that. Even the gopis, they were envious of one another in a transcendental sense. They were thinking: "Oh, she has attracted Krishna more than me, that is very nice. She has given Him more pleasure than me, now let me try more to please Him." That is the process, how to improve in Krishna consciousness.

The mood of transcendental competition between Melbourne and Sydney encouraged the devotees more and more. Since the Sydney chapter were reaching out to the suburbs, the Melbourne branch did likewise, taking towns like Geelong and Ballarat by surprise.

Both temples were also inspired to improve their standard of Deity worship, although Melbourne as yet had no installed Deities. Citralekha, who had left Melbourne when her visa expired, had recently returned again from India. While in Calcutta, she had acquired a set of beautiful 30cm brass Radha and Krsna Deities, along with a variety of articles for Deity worship. Citralekha was an expert seamstress -- she had been well-trained in India -- and she set about sewing numerous outfits for Radha and Krsna.

Upendra had already written to Srila Prabhupada asking if the Deities could be installed. Prabhupada had replied that he would be happy to install them when he came to Melbourne. Meanwhile, on Prabhupada's advice, Citralekha started training selected devotees in Melbourne in the art of Deity worship, as she had learned from Prabhupada's senior women disciples in India. Particularly expert in cooking, she would demonstrate the timeless art of traditional Bengali sweet-making: rasagulla, fresh cheese balls simmered in sugar syrup; sandesa, a creamy cheese fudge; and burfi, a rich milk confection flavoured with cashews, saffron and spices. On special occasions, she would prepare kamala kheer -- an amazing combination of freshly condensed milk and sugar, folded with little cells of sweet tangerines. A few boys and girls were eager to learn these arts from Citralekha, who "gave her all" to train them.

Similarly, in Sydney, devotees were sewing Sri Sri Radha Gopinatha new sets of clothes and daily decorating Their altar with the profuse frangipanis that bloomed in Sydney's summer heat. They too tried their best to improve cooking standards, although they met with an occasional obstacle.

Kurma: We received a circular letter sent originally to Los Angeles from Prabhupada, encouraging us to improve the standard of Deity worship in our temple. Prabhupada had given some details, and especially he mentioned that we should offer "bhog" to Krsna five or six times daily.

None of us had any idea what "bhog" was. Was it a vegetable, sweet, or a type of savoury? Someone speculated that they thought it was a type of rice. We looked it up in whatever scant Indian cook books we could find, but discovered no recipe.

"It must be important," we reasoned, "because Krsna eats it six times a day." We'd ask Indian guests who came to the temple, but to no avail. It wasn't until months later, when a devotee coming from India told us: "Bhog? -- Oh, you mean bhoga! That means unoffered food!" We were relieved to discover that despite our ignorance, Radha Gopinatha were already regularly receiving ample offerings of bhoga every day!
