Ghost Stories


Once when Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati was opening a new center in a house that had been given for the use of the Gaudiya Mission, a ghostly incident occurred.

He was staying in a room on the second floor. One brahmacari was in attendance, reading Srimad Bhagavatam while he worked at his desk. That brahmacari suddenly saw a bone‑hand float in through the window. He cried out and fainted. When Srila Bhaktisiddhanta inquired the cause for his alarm, the brahmacari told what he'd seen, but Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati didn't seem to take it as very important. He told the brahmacari to chant Hare Krishna, not cry unin‑ telligibly.



Thereafter the hand again appeared and floated into the room as if to grasp the neck of Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati. This time the brahmacari chanted Hare Krishna and then fainted. Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati revived the brahmacari, saying, "Don't faint. Chant and read Srimad Bhaga‑ vatam." When the hand came again, the brahmacari did just that. Srila Bhaktisiddhanta saw the hand and chanted, "Haribol!", and the hand disappeared. He then said to the brahmacari, "No need to worry, that ghost is now delivered."

THIS WICKED MIND

"This wicked mind, which is never to be trusted, should be broomsticked every morning with such warnings as, "be not anxious to find fault with others, or to declare thyself a true sincere, bonafide bhakta, which certainly thou art not!" There is an adage to the effect that para-carccakera gati nahi kona kale, "a man who is habituated to criticize others' conduct will never prosper!" Let others do whatever they like, I have no concern for them. I should rather find fault with my own damned mind and think like the Vaisnava mahajana who sings:


amara jibana, sada pape rata,
nahiko punyera lesa
para-sukhe duhkhi, sada mithya-bhasi.
para-duhkha sukha-karo

“Ever engaged in vicious activity ... and without the slightest trace of virtue in me. A liar as I am, always sorry at others pleasures and merry at others’ sorrows, troubles and cares.We should always remember this song and engage our mind ceaselessly in hari-bhajana. We should not run about attacking others with dissuading policy; such conduct behooves only deceitful persons and not preachers."

Duty of Grihasta-2

A grhastha's first duty is to be fully dependent on Vasudeva, Krsna, and to try to satisfy Him in all respects by executing one's prescribed devotional service. 

This devotional service will depend on the instructions of authorities and the association of devotees who are actually engaged in devotional service. 

The beginning of devotional service is sravanam, or hearing. One must hear from the mouths of realized souls. In this way the grhastha's attraction to his wife and children will gradually be reduced.

Should earn what is required and not over-endeavor simply to accumulate money and unnecessarily increase in material comforts.

Although a grhastha should externally be very active in earning his livelihood, he should internally be situated as a fully self-realized person, without attachment for material gains.

Grhastha should be engaged in occupational duties advised by the spiritual master and sastra.

Specifically a grhastha should engage in agricultural activities to earn money. 

Whatever a grhastha may possess he should equally distribute to all living entities, without discrimination. The best process is to distribute prasada. 

A grhastha should not be very much attached to his wife; he should engage even his own wife in serving a guest with all attention.

Whatever money a grhastha accumulates by the grace of God he should spend in five activities, namely worshiping the Supreme Personality of Godhead,receiving Vaisnavas and saintly persons, distributing prasada to the general public and to all living entities,offering prasada to his forefathers, and also offering prasada to his own self.

The grhastha should also visit the holy places of pilgrimage mentioned in the puranas. 

In this way he should fully engage in worshiping the Supreme Personality of Godhead for the benefit of his family, his society, his country, and humanity at large.

DUTY OF GRHASTHA-1

First Srila Bhaktivinoda quotes SB 11.18.42] grhino bhuta-raksejya, "The main duties of a householder are to give shelter to all living entities and perform sacrifice."

What is proper occupation? To know this, one should see the behavior of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu's followers. As far as possible I will try to briefly compile them in this essay. First I will write about the behavior and occupation of the grhastha, as found in the character of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and His devotees.

* As a support for his devotional service, a householder should find a suitable wife. (CC Adi 15.26-27)

* While maintaining religious family life with one's wife, sons and daughters born in the form of Krsna's servants and maidservants, to nourish them is called maintaining the family. In these activities there is a need for piously accumulating wealth. (CB Antya 5.41, CC Madhya 15.96)

* One must be educated at a proper age. But he should not study atheistic literatures. (CB Adi 12.49, Madhya 9.241-242)

* Serving guests is the principal duty of a grhastha--this is the Lord's instruction. (CB Adi 14.21, 26)

* A grhastha should act with simplicity in his dealings with people; he should not allow any kind of cheating or duplicity in his heart. (CB Adi 14.142)

* It is the principal duty of a grhastha to serve superior persons. (CC Adi 15.21)

* A householder should take the principles of renunciation to heart; but he should not dress as a renunciant. (CC Madhya 16.237-239)

* A householder is dutybound to work for the benefit of everyone. (CC Adi 9.41, 7.92)

* A householder should fully depend on the will of the Lord in all his activities. (CB Madhya 28.55)

* A householder should cautiously give up the association of nondevotees, women, and uxorious people. (CC Madhya 22.87)

* By following his prescribed duties a grhastha Vaisnava should accumulate wealth for his maintenance. He should not accumulate wealth by sinful means. (CB Antya 5.685-688)

* A householder should not hanker for another's wife or prostitutes. (CC Madhya 9.227-228)

* There is no difference between smartas and Vaisnavas regarding following the codes of religion. (CB Antya 9.388-389)

* It is the duty of a grhastha to constantly chant the holy names of the Lord and serve the Vaisnavas and the Lord with the help of his relatives and by the wealth he has earned through his pious life. Regarding serving the Vaisnavas, one should know that there are three types of nonduplicitous devotees. SErving such Vaisnavas is called vaisnava-seva. (CC Madhya 15.104)

* There is no need to gather many Vaisnavas by invitation [for prasada --VGD]. Whenever a Vaisnava comes for any purpose he should be properly served with care. By gathering many Vaisnavas, one may commit offenses. (CC Madhya 15.198)

* It is the duty of the grhastha Vaisnava to show mercy on the poor and the fallen. (CC Antya 3.238)

* A grhastha Vaisnava should not desire to give up his body merely out of some sentiment or anger. (CC Antya 4.57)

* There is no consideration of superior or inferior status due to social position in regard to worshipping Krsna. In worldly occupations there are different activities according to the different social divisions, which are due to superior and inferior grades of intelligence. There are no such distinctions in the process of devotional service. (CC Antya 4.66-67, 5.84)

* A grhastha Vaisnava should feel satisfied with whatever food and clothing he gets without difficulty. (CB Antya 4.293)

* A grhastha Vaisnava should perform devotional service with undeviated attention, knowing Krsna as the Lord of all. He should not disrespect the demigods worshipped by the smarta-sampradaya. (CB Antya 2.243)

* It is the duty of a grhastha to work for the benefit of others even by giving up his own self-interest. (CB Antya 3.365)

* A grhastha Vaisnava should respect and worship tulasi. (CB Antya 8.159-160)

* A householder with devotion is glorious, while a householder without devotion is insignificant. Whatever social dealings a householder has to perform should be done while taking shelter of the holy name of Krsna. (CC Antya 16.6-7)

* Everyone is prohibited from corrupt earning or spending, and workers are prohibited from accepting bribes. (CC Antya 9.90, 142-144)

* A grhastha should accept a spiritual master who is full of devotion and of pure character. (CB Madhya 21.65)

* A householder should be particularly careful not to commit offenses against the Vaisnavas. (CB Madhya 22.33)

* Serving devotees is a householder's main duty. (CC Antya 16.57, 60)

* In the SB 11.20.27-28 Lord Krsna describes how a householder should act until his natural propensity for enjoying sense objects is overcome and he fully attains the characteristics of a pure devotee: "Having awakened faith in the narrations of My glories, being disgusted with all material activities, knowing that all sense gratification leads to misery, but still being unable to renounce all sense enjoyment, My devotee remains happy and worships Me with great faith and conviction. Even though he is sometimes engaged in sense enjoyment, My devotee knows that all sense gratification leads to a miserable result, and he sincerely repents such activities."

* When a householder has faith, he should take initiation into the chanting of the Hare Krsna maha-mantra. (CC Madhya 22.64)

* A grhastha Vaisnava must gradually acquire all the qualities mentioned in the Caitanya Caritamrta (Madhya 22.78.80): "Devotees are always merciful, humble, truthful, equal to all, faultless, magnanimous, mild and clean. They are without material possessions, and they perform welfare work for everyone. They are peaceful, surrendered to Krsna, and desireless. They are indifferent to material acquisitions and fixed in devotional service. They completely control the six bad qualities---lust, anger, greed, and so forth. They eat only as much as required, and they are not inebriated. They are respectful, grave, compassionate, and without false prestige. They are friendly, poetic, expert and silent."

* A grhastha Vaisnava should be eager to associate with advanced devotees. (CC Madhya 22.83)

* Out of all the processes of devotional service, one should give earnest attention to the five limbs mentioned in Caitanya-caritamrta (Madhya 22.128-129): "One should associate with devotees, chant the holy name of the Lord, hear Srimad Bhagavatam, reside at Mathura, and worship the Deity with faith and veneration. These five limbs of devotional service are the best of all. Even a slight performance of these five awakens love for Krsna."

* A grhastha Vaisnava should not endeavor for any knowledge or renunciation other than knowledge of one's relationship with the Lord in devotional service and renunciation born from devotional service. If one begins the worship of Krsna with special care and eagerness, then he achieves all auspiciousness. (CC Madhya 22.145)

* A grhastha Vaisnava should constantly chant the holy names while carefully giving up the ten offenses. (CC Antya 4.70-71)

* A householder should accept pure devotional service that is not based simply on religious sentiments. (CB Madhya 23.41)

* The mood of servitude is proper for a living entity, and the mood of being lord is detrimental. (CB Madhya 23.480, 482)

* A grhastha Vaisnava should model his character after that of Lord Caitanya and His followers. A householder should follow the ways of life and obtain his means of livelihood as exhibited by Lord Caitanya and His followers. If one desires Krsna in all his activities, then those activities are auspicious. By endeavoring to gratify one's senses and attain irrelevant fruits, one becomes a materialist... Srila Ramananda Raya, Sri Pundarika Vidyanidhi, Sri Srivasa Pandita, Sri Sivananda Sena, Sri Satyaraja Khan, and Sri Advaita Prabhu were all grhasthas and have shown us the way of faultless living. The difference between a householder and a renunciate is due to their different means of livelihood. If the home is favorable for a devotee's devotional service, he then becomes eligible to leave home. At that time the detachment he develops for his house through his devotional service is accepted. For this reason, Srivasa Pandita did not leave home. For this reason, Svarupa Damodara took sannyasa. All genuine devotees have remained either at home or in the forest due to this consideration. Whoever has left home due to this consideration is called a genuine renunciate. He is always careful to not commit offenses against the holy name.

Essence of the four Vaisnava philosophies.


[Gauracandra to Nimbarka:]“`Later, when I begin the sankirtana movement, I Myself will preach the essence of the four Vaisnava philosophies.

From Madhva I will receive two essential items: his complete defeat of the Mayavada philosophy [kevale-advaita-nirasana], and his service to the Deity of Krsna, accepting the Deity as an eternal spiritual being [krsna-murti-sevana].

From Ramanuja I will accept two great teachings: the concept of bhakti unpolluted by karma and jnana [ananya-bhakti], and service to the devotees [bhakta-jana-seva].

From Visnusvami's teachings I will accept two main elements: the sentiment ofexclusive dependence on Krsna [tadiya-sarvasva-bhava], and the path of raga-bhakti [raga-marga].

And from you [Nimbarka] I will receive two excellent principles: the necessity of taking shelter of Radha [ekanta-radhikasraya], and the high esteem for the gopis' love of Krsna [gopi-bhava].

kks_serbia_RY_2014In the Nectar of Devotion, we have a description of Kamsa’s moment of doubt. I like it! Kamsa sits on his throne in Mathura, in his ultimate mood of demoniac nature, and he is thinking, “Hah, what can Krsna do to me? Nothing! I have powerful malice. So many. I mean Keshi, you know Keshi, the ultimate personification of power. What is this Krsna going to do to me?”

Just then, the messenger runs into the court, “Your majesty, your majesty, your majesty. Tragic news!”

Kamsa, “WHAT?”

“Your majesty… Keshi!”

 Kamsa, “Noooo, not Keshi!

“Your majesty, Keshi is no more.”

Kamsa, “No, he (Krsna) is too powerful, he is inconceivable! How is it possible? Maybe, maybe I should just surrender unto him? But what would people say, imagine me, Kamsa! No, I could not do that! Maybe then I should just go to Vrindavan and inflict pain on the residents. But how can I go when I’m too afraid to leave the palace because of Krsna.”

Isn’t it nice that even Kamsa, for a moment, was thinking, “Maybe I should just surrender!” Just see, that gives us hope. If that can come up in Kamsa’s head and heart then anybody has a chance. That is nice. Even the demons are touched by Krsna. Krsna is Bhagavan.

Oh my Lord, make me dance!

Sp_smilingPrabhupada danced on so many occasions! But the most importance statement about Srila Prabhupada's dancing is not his dancing in the Avalon ballroom, in the San Francisco concert, nor is it in London at the famous London Ratha Yatra where Prabhupada went up and down in love and ecstasy.

The real dancing that Srila Prabhupada did is described in the Markine Bhagavata Dharma. When theJaladuta had just landed in New York, Prabhupada began to write about how he was just a kāṣṭhera puttali– a puppet, a wooden doll, a marionette, just a puppet on strings, "Make me dance. Oh my Lord, make me dance." In other words, to become the willing instrument of Krsna, in Krsna's hands, as Krsna desires it! There, Prabhupada really danced! And the amazing thing that happened is that the puppet itself turned into a puppeteer and subsequently, so many puppets danced in the hands of that puppeteer. Prabhupada made so many men dance according to his will!

He made them go to remote places. He made them really do something very substantial. That was Prabhupada, he was a general undoubtedly, driving a mission to go forward, to conquer the world. There is no doubt about that. Prabhupada said he had no problem except one problem which was that he could not think small, and that was a fact! He never could think small. He would always think big, so big that it would blow the mind of all. There is no one who does not feel that Prabhupada's big thinking exceeds anything that they ever thought; that is a fact!

But that is Guru; he has a greater vision about our life than we have ourselves. He wants something greater from us than what we would do on our own. Therefore, Guru is always challenging us to do more, to go beyond our limits.

Pride takes away love

It is our false pride that keeps Krishna and other living entities far from us. We have not only false ego but also egotism(pride in having accomplished something).

When we were new to Krishna consciousness we were sooooo blissful because we were humble and never wanted to take any credit for ourself nor took pride in our accomplishments. Over a period of time we gained a lot of knowledge all from other Vaishnavas and Prabhupada and Guru. Later we thought now I know everything and started becoming complacent. This is when we loose ecstasy in spiritual life. As long as we have our false pride in our heart, Krishna never comes closer to us.

He has His own ways to shatter this thick wall of false pride in our heart to make us better devotees with more humility and love for Krishna and His devotees.

The moment we start thinking, "oh I have been in the movement for so and so long and serving nicely, accomplished such and such things. I am the best and others are neophytes", it's actually we who are neophytes to think so. The best attitude towards being humble is to think that I am a new Bhakta everyday.

Forget all the past and Krishna remembers His devotees' every single service and we don't have to worry about recognition or cheap adoration which is shallow and at the utmost pleasing for the material element our false ego. At one point Krishna will allow Himself to be conquered by our love, and gives Himself but it's not so easy to get to that point without unalloyed pure constant devotional service to Him. The price to pay is very high but is possible.

Srimad Bhagavatam is designed to help us see how Krishna is close to us. Bhagavatam begins to explain, how the creation is emanating from Krishna and how everything in this world is depending on Krishna. It says that, without Krishna, we cannot see and without Krishna we cannot hear… 
He controls all our essential functions. So in this way, everything relates to Krishna…
We see that the Supreme Lord is ultimately behind the sun. He supplies that unlimited energy! How can a thing be possible for the sun to keep on shining, shining, shining, shining, shining? and it never becomes diminished! and it’s heat – How’s it possible? 
It is the unlimited energy of the Supreme Lord!

Amazing mercy!

lord-jagannathIn my travels, I visited a devotee’s house and he had quite an amazing altar. On his altar, he had deities of Radha Krsna which were from Vrindavan and 250 years old. In those days, there were a lot of details in the deities – they were very beautiful, they were very ecstatic. They were like in some sort of dancing pose but that was not everything. This devotee he had gone to India, and he had done some service in some of the places where Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu had performed his pastimes and some families in India, they still have some things that were used by Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu directly.

He helped those families to clean these things and to make arrangements to preserve them better. As a result, they gave him little pieces; a piece of a the chadhaar of Caitanya Mahaprabhu, a piece of a kaupinaof Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and a little chip off the shoes from Lord Caitanya which are in the temple inDhameswara. In Navadvip, there is a temple and we know that when Caitanya Mahaprabhu took sannyas, he left his shoes for Visnupriya, his wife. She worshiped those shoes and those shoes are still there. The shoes are made of wood and they are in a silver casing. In order to preserve the shoes, they took them out of the silver casing and there were a few tiny pieces of the wood and this devotee got some of those. So he has all kinds of things like that – paraphernalia that were directly used by Caitanya Mahaprabhu and a piece of a turban of Lord Nityananda, directly Nityananda’s turban.

book distribution_durbanIn Jaipur, there is a jacket of Madhu Pandit which made up of tulasi beads, it is very famous. This devotee has a little piece of it. This devotee has some shakti (power) to collect all these things. What an amazingamount of mercy is there on his altar! In this way, coming closer to Krsna. When we are eager to collect mercy, then we are eager in spiritual life. Everyone has some ability, someshakti – something that they can do. Some people distribute books. Some may say, ‘Ah, what will my seven books do?’ But it is not just about the seven books. We go out every day and because the books are distributed through personal contact, a person gets touched by that book and that is meaningful!

In the beginning of spiritual life, we get a little taste and then when we build it up more and more with service; and then Krsna, who is otherwise invisible to us, becomes more visible. If you make such an altar and you have so many holy places, Krsna becomes more manifest. So this is our business, to somehow or other, make arrangements through service – by serving Krsna to make him more manifest in our life then everything becomes meaningful! Otherwise it is difficult you know. Otherwise people look at us and think,‘Look at them, they give up everything.’ Then we ourselves feel, ‘Look at ourselves. We are giving up everything.’ And all our focus is about giving up, then it is very difficult, how could we give up everything, for how long? But, if we are actually getting absorbed in serving Krsna and we discover more and more about Krsna, then everything gets quite amazing! 

Also on this altar, this devotee had a deity of Lord Jagannatha, just Jagannatha. In Jagannatha Puri, they worshiped Lord Jagannatha in quite a special way – very elaborately! Lord Jagannatha is made of wood and in India there are termites which eat the wood. So anything made of wood is difficult to keep over the years as it just gets destroyed. So, deities of wood are more temporary than deities of stone, obviously. Therefore, there is a practice that approximately almost every nineteen years, a new deity of Jagannatha is carved which replaces the old deity and the old deity is put to rest in the ground by performing a ceremony. And what they do, is that inside Lord Jagannatha, in the region of the heart, somewhere in the trunk, there is a space, a hole, and inside there is what they call a brahma padartha. The brahma padarthais actually a salagram sila which is inside the deity. When the new deity is re-carved, the brahma padarthafrom the old deity is put inside the new deity.

kks_radhadeshSo then this devotee had Jagannatha and inside there, was this Govardhana sila. So it was quite an altar. Not just some pictures of Krsna and everything is fine to offer something! No, everything was quite filled with special mercy and with special arrangements. That kind of effort is what makes the difference. When we do that then we live with Krsna. It is said in theUpadesamrta or The Nectar of Instruction, that the devotee must always live in Vrindavan by hearing, chanting, remembering and being constantly engaged! In that way, we are entering deeper into the spiritual realm until that becomes our reality and only then can we be peaceful in devotional service, when we live in the spiritual world!

As long as we live in the material world and are practicing a spiritual life, then it will be a struggle. But, we should try to live in a spiritual world and try to serve Krsna nicely there. Like the altar is the spiritual world, so when we serve on the altar, we are serving in the spiritual world. The Bhagavatam is Krsna and when we are reading the Bhagavatam then we are in the spiritual world. The name of Krsna is non-different from Krsna so when we chant the name then we are with Krsna. So, all these things are giving us access to the spiritual world. Sri Vrindavan Dham is the spiritual world. The essence is that we must somehow or other live in the spiritual world and then this Krsna consciousness will be blissful. Then our renunciation, our so called renunciation, will be no renunciation at all it is simply a means of staying free from material entanglement so that the material energy does not take too much of our time!

The glories of Srimad Bhagavatam

bhagavatam_bigThe nature of Srimad Bhagavatam is that it is ever fresh. It is never old; it is never stale but ever fresh! It is going on right now – Bhagavatam. There is no limit to the Bhagavatam. The demigods have a Bhagavatam of 100 000 verses. We have 18 000 verses and they have a 100 000. There is more and more… and more will be revealed. Bhagavatam will be revealed from within the heart because dharmasya tattvaṁ nihitaṁ guhāyāṁ (Caitanya Caritamrta Madhya 25.57) – true religious principles are not found within the scripture alone but they are hidden within the heart. Within the heart these things will be revealed.

So we read Srimad Bhagavatam and then we live by Srimad Bhagavatam and then Srimad Bhagavatam becomes revealed to us, gradually. This is the system of how to change our lives. That is the idea. Only then will we know Srimad Bhagavatam. You cannot know the Bhagavatam just by reading. By reading, you scratch the surface but you cannot know; just as you cannot know Vrndavan by just buying a ticket, going there and walking around. One may say, "Radhe Radhe," but we cannot know. We cannot penetrate into Vrndavan unless we live like the eternal residents of Vrndavan, unless we become pure devotees then we can perceive Vrndavan.

srimad-bhagavatamIn one verse, the whole message of Srimad Bhagavatam is summarized. So, I am saving you from the trouble because the Bhagavatam is 18 000 verses long. So you pay attention, just for one moment, to catch this one. This is a shortcut to 18 000 verses. So that helps. It has been identified like that: as the one verse that sheds light to all the other verses – paribhasa-sutra – in a condensed form.

ete cāḿśa-kalāḥ puḿsaḥ
kṛṣṇas tu bhagavān svayam
indrāri-vyākulaḿ lokaḿ
mṛḍayanti yuge yuge (Srimad Bhagavatam 1.3.28)

 

"I appear again and again, millennium after millennium, in so many forms, as so many avatars, but in this form of Krsna I am bhagavan svayam. I am – svayam – the Supreme Lord Himself – the Original Supreme Personality of Godhead, from whom everything emanates, who is the origin of all other forms and the origin of everything that exists. That original personality am I – Sri Krsna."

That is the essence of Srimad Bhagavatam; the conclusion of all the 18000 verses.

krsna in vrindavanKrsna is full of love and full of kindness. We are too focused on the reality of the body, on this life we are going through… Whereas Krsna is not illusioned by the material forms, Krsna is seeing the soul. He is interested in the service the soul has rendered because that is actually blissful activity. Anything else is never blissful.Any material activity is never everblissful! Sometimes we are hoping that it is going to be. We hope that the material energy will be fulfilling our desires and as soon as there is a little enjoyment we say, “Yes, yes, yes! Now I am happy. Now I am so happy!”

But how happy are you really? Are you really happy? Who are you trying to convince? Material happiness is not going to be possible.

This verse (BG 9.9), takes us to this aspect of the material world, that Krsna has nothing to do with the material world. He is not interested in the material world; he did not want the material world. He does not particularly want to do anything with the material world. It is not his design, his plan. It is all the plan of the living beings. Krsna’s plan is something totally different – it is the spiritual world, and Krsna makes endless efforts to bring all living beings back to the spiritual world, in someway or other but to become a resident of spiritual world requires a certain quality, so Krsna does make many arrangements for us to learn.

Poking mind - you stupid stop it

Our mind is like a baby poking us every time. We tolerate for most of the times but sometimes the poking gets too annoying to finally get our attention on it's cravings. If we give way to what is being asked it may turn us to ditch and at that time the same mind says, you stupid why did you do this? You don't have any sense?

In the Bhagavatham 11th canto it is mentioned that a horse rider will go in the way of horse initially to get it to full control. The horse rider will give way to the different things that a horse does in the beginning to understand the horse and eventually gains full control of the horse. Similarly the Vedic samskaras from birth to death help us to control the horse like or baby like mind in a protected safe way so that we don't get totally lost!!!

Yoga is simply a show when it's intention is Bhoga

Without mind control and sense control, self realization is simply a show. No path of real self realization can give success if one still holds on to sensual pleasure.

Therefore in the initial stages, the beginners are also expected to be well versed in the philosophy to strengthen the intelligence in order to fix the mind on the process with the power of intelligence. The philosophy of Sankhya helps us to understand our real position with respect to the material manifestation and The Lord.

Different sages have different numbers as we see in the 11th canto of Bhagavatham, but the essence is the same in the Sankhya. Some say 24, others 25, while some other sages say 27 which includes 3 modes of material nature.

A cloud is compared to a qualified person because it pours rain and gives sustenance to many people


During the rainy season, lightning appears in one group of clouds and then immediately in another group of clouds. This phenomenon is compared to a lusty woman who does not fix her mind on one man. A cloud is compared to a qualified person because it pours rain and gives sustenance to many people; a man who is qualified similarly gives sustenance to many living creatures, such as family members or many workers in business. Unfortunately, his whole life can be disturbed by a wife who divorces him. 

When the husband is disturbed, the whole family is ruined, the children are dispersed, or the business is closed, and everything is affected. It is therefore recommended that a woman desiring to advance in Krsna consciousness peacefully live with a husband and that the couple should not separate under any condition. The husband and wife should control sex indulgence and concentrate their minds on Krsna consciousness so their life may be successful.

After all, in the material world a man requires a woman, and a woman requires a man. When they are combined, they should live peacefully in Krsna consciousness and should not be restless, like the lightning, flashing from one group of clouds to another. - Light of Bhagavata, Srila Prabhupada.

Even though this world is full of resources, you will get only what you are destined for!!! Nothing less, nothing more but only what you deserve!!! This is no joke... It's all karma of an endless cycle of birth and death life after life. 


These material bodies are like machines and the souls are seated in these machines based on their karma. The Lord is rotating the bodies of these souls. So sometimes we come here as man and other times as woman and the cycle goes on for various reasons like femists, anti-feminists etc.

How we can help improve our devotee relationships? 


What we do with others should be what we do with ourselves. Or, what we do with ourselves will be what we do with other people. As we move along, our life may bump into another person's life, and by associating together for some time we will come to know more about them…We may not know the circumstances of life of someone who is coming from a different culture and upbringing, which explains why they are carrying on in certain ways. The ways they are carrying on are exhibiting their spirituality or shortcoming that makes the present make-up of that person.

Now, how do we address ourselves in our relationships with those persons? That depends on how we address ourselves. In all religions of the world there are teachings about how we should be accepting of others, or how we should address ourselves to others' shortcomings…We do not have to like the behavior, but then, it is the soul that we are to love. This teaching to see the person as spirit soul is very clear in Bhagavad Gita. But how do we live that teaching? How do we live seeing spirit soul, particularly in the devotee community? These devotees are trying to tread a path that will take them to Krishna, even though they have these shortcomings and bad stuff which we may not like. So, continue to extend the feeling of love towards the soul in a non-judgmental way. As we may struggle with certain things, others may also be struggling with some things.

We should feel towards that person the way we would want others to feel towards us. There is a famous saying, "Do unto others as you would expect others do unto you". Similarly, there is another saying, "Do not judge the other person, lest ye be judged". Behave in such a manner to all other persons in a way that you would want them to behave towards you and to your shortcomings, whether they are judging you or not. We can start with forgiveness, because we wish that others forgive us and not judge us. And, treat the other person with dignity, whether they behave with dignity or not. Then their good qualities will come out and other bad stuff will diminish, just because you treated them with dignity…Because, within the body is a spirit soul who is part and parcel of Krishna. So there is this intrinsic worth, although they are hurting themselves again and again.

Discipline by Love

Discipline is not a word that most people like, because it sounds harsh. However, there is also a loving kind of discipline, wherein discipline means making oneself obedient to something that will elevate one in a spiritual sense. In Srila Prabhupada's words, "there is no disciple without discipline". It is kind of self-evident. How can one be a disciple without being disciplined? So, discipline is a voluntary function, one in which we submit to the instruction or the understanding that is being imparted.

The classic example of this is Pradyumna, the son of Krishna and Rukmini. Pradyumna had an ideal attitude of servitude unto his father, Krishna. When Pradyumna wanted something, if Krishna did not want that, Pradyumna would decide to give up his desire for that something. And, the other way around: When Pradyuma did not want to do something but Krishna wanted it, then Pradyumna would do it. So, it was discipline or obedience out of love...In this world, there is no real love because love means without any condition. Similarly, discipline is without any condition and is out of love.

Narada as a small boy was brought to that kind of discipline. Discipline is by love and not by a stick...The qualification to receive is discipline. In order to have a loving relationship with someone, we have to receive the love that they are extending. Acknowledge and feel it. Without receiving, we cannot be in a loving relationship. In this case, Narada as a student was receiving from the Bhakivedantas. In our case, how are we to receive from a spiritual teacher or a spiritual master? Suta Goswami and Srila Prabhupada are giving us the formula in this verse. Three things are required - "without being self-controlled, without being disciplined and without being fully obedient, no one can become successful in following the instructions of the spiritual master, and without doing so, no one is able to go back to Godhead." That is just the beginning and the mature stage is love...So, if we want the mature fruit, we need to take to this process.

Curse of restless travel

Daksha when he found Narada muni giving Sannyasa to his sons, he became angry and cursed Narada muni that you would never get to stay in one place. Daksha said his sons should first enjoy the life and then get the realization that it's miserable to do sense gratication. But it's for less intelligent people who will accept things only after experience. Sense gratification naturally brings miseries and giving up that later after experiencing is not for intelligent class of people. Intelligent people accept simply by hearing and seeing others experiencing.


Narada muni accepted it happily. The same curse was transferred by the parents of American boys and girls to Srila Prabhupada also when he made many young boys in ISKCON as sannyasis.


And before Prabhupada left the planet he also ordered HH.Jayapataka Swami to take the curse for himself to preach the message of Lord Caitanya and assist the mission of Srila Prabhupada. Maharaja says that he can't stay in any place for more than a few days as a result of this curse.

Kardam Muni's yogic power, planned material enjoyment, liberation

A yogi can multiply himself into 8 or 9 different persons but because his consciousness is one he can feel the same emotions that other expansions are going through. For instance if one expansion is undergoing painful experience, all the other 8 persons will also experience the pain. This is the limitation of the individual souls but Krishna is unlimited and has unlimited number of forms and he can simultaneously be present in different forms and not be affected by the emotions of other forms. 

Kardama muni multiplies himself 9 times to satisfy his wife devahuti as her desires to enjoy sex life increased when Kardama muni took her to a tour around the Universe. Nowadays which man can do such wonderful things? It is also mentioned that the lusty desire of woman is 9 times more than that of a man and so Kardama muni expanded himself 9 times to please his wife. However we cannot imitate Kardama muni because his lifetime was different and he was on a different yuga where he had lot of austerities as well. He never did any enjoyment with his wife outside of the religious principles. 

When we go back home to the spiritual world we have to be very clear about our goal of seeing Krishna and serving Him. Otherwise on our way Home we might get bewildered as we see various planets where there are higher levels of comfort and sensual pleasures. Some planets will have beautiful men and damsels and others will have many yogis who are expert in doing mystical things. When we see them we  should not get disturbed. Because Devahuti was seeing the heavenly realms, he sex desire got agitated and increased. So it's a trap for us when we enter into a very comfortable environment in the material world. Kardama muni had very well organized plan of how much he can enjoy for sometime and how then he has to give up the attachment to sensual pleasures after enjoying with the wife for sometime. He had his austerities which backed him even when he was enjoying the material sense gratification. But what is our position, if we think like enjoying for sometime and come back to devotional service later we might easily get side tracked because we dont have austerities or time like Kardama muni. 

Kardama muni's time is in heavenly realm and our time is very very limited 60-70 earthly years. Chances are there that we might totally get lost if we try to imitate kardama muni. He was enjoying for many many years with his wife and which passed like a second. But after that he planned to stop and then go for liberation. They had many daughters. But they carefully planned to get a son, subsequently. Both husband and wife were alert and then prayed to Lord Vishnu to get a son. Kapila dev, the Lord Himself came to deliver both Devahuti and Kardama muni. Since Devahuti didnt receive knowledge from Kardama muni she was praying to the Lord to get knowledge and Lord Kapila dev satisfied her desires.

Not everyone has to undertake the married life to understand it's difficulties and pain

Daksha was not happy with Narada Muni's preaching to make all of Dakhsa's sons to renounced order of life at a young age, because the general understanding is a man and woman having desires to enjoy their senses will undergo lot of difficulties in their Grihastha life and eventually they themselves will understand the nature of problems that arise out of sense gratification. For instance, a woman after undergoing the labour pain during child birth will naturally think about giving up the enjoyment of sex life. But even Daksha would never have thought that the modern world people have other alternative ways of having the same enjoyment without actually giving child birth. 

The point is however Narada muni gave them the realized knowledge with which the sons of Daksha were already convinced of the nature of the enjoyment of the material world and so they didnt have any doubt about it and they were perfectly realized souls.

Daksha is trying to get progenies to populate the Universe but he is tired of narada's preaching which makes all the sons celibates. FInally Daksha goes and begets daughters in which case narada muni couldnt do anything.

No reason to feel alone!

Lord caitanyaOur position is that we cannot see Krsna; we forget him all the time and don’t see him, and then we think,‘Oh, Krsna, why have you left me alone?!’ Come on! The day you came to the material world, Krsna came with you in the heart as paramatma. He never left us alone, not for a moment; he is always with us, seated on the lotus in the heart.

In the concluding words of the Caitanya Caritamrta –  I like those concluding words – you can read them in the last book of Antya-lila, Srila Prabhupada describes that Krsna is actually personally seated in the heart of his devotee – and he is not alone! Krsna is there in all his various forms and expansions, so it is getting pretty crowded there!

Imagine all the Deities are packed together in the heart. And Prabhupada says, ‘That is not all: Krsna is even present there in the form of the spiritual master and in that way,’ he said, ‘my spiritual master is always present, is always with me.’ Isn’t that nice? I find that so powerful, that final statement in the end.  In that way, we can see that we are never alone as Lord Caitanya is with us every moment

unhappy2I used to think, before I came to Krsna consciousness, that now I would join a movement of very like-minded people and that I would feel very intimate friendship. Then, I was shocked to see that that person who I kind of detested for his views, he also had joined! (laughing)

I thought, “How is this possible? Not this guy! How is it possible that he became a devotee!?” Well, because of the universal nature of Krsna consciousness, people of all kinds, from all walks of life, even from opposing world views, can join the Krsna conscious movement and therefore it is not always easy to have that kind of intimate friendship with everyone. We do not!

Some devotees never get beyond colleagues. We do have some friends also, in this movement. With colleagues, it can get very impersonal and very distant with virtually no affection; and therefore we can feel alone, especially if we have not deeply developed our relationship with Krsna. If we have deeply developed our relationship to Krsna, then there we find a satisfaction that nourishes us even when we are alone with people. Then once one is nourished in that relationship, one has to bring it back down to the social platform and begin to develop real relationships with people. But without first going up to Krsna – and first up to Krsna means developing a relationship of attachment to Krsna, intimate interaction with Krsna and always feeling that he is interacting with you – without that, we are on the normal social platform! Then we will only be able to deal with people who are kind of like-minded, and others remain strangers even when they chant Hare Krsna. Then we are a movement of strangers with a few friends because how many people can you relate to, anyway?

Srila-Prabhupada3When we go up in attachment to Krsna and really interact with Krsna closely at every moment, and we bring that down into our relationships with others, then we can become like Prabhupada! He had that capacity. He was not limited by his social background and he could be completely relevant to hippies in America although they were culturally so different and in such a different stage of life and so on… Prabhupada was so relevant and that is what I am talking about because he went to the root of the things. Yes, unless we have that, we will just still be alone because we will just still associate on the level of like-mindedness and the normal social dynamics will still apply. That is what I see and it is all over the world. Loneliness is becoming an issue in our movement…

Friendship is important

Friendship is important

yellow-rose-waterI think that the only thing that can really bond us together is friendship. Just common acceptance of Krsna as the Supreme Lord will bring us together from time to time – we will come together at the temple and festivals – but friendship will take us so much further. Because it is in friendship, real friendship, that we are going to stimulate each other so much more than by just being colleagues!

I have often given this example of how we can be together like colleagues. We are all devotees of Krsna and we are all colleagues. We are all devotees in the same temple, we are all colleagues. We are all chanting Hare Krsna, we are all colleagues. We are all dancing in the kirtan party as colleagues. But when there is no friendship, it is not enough.

If there is friendship, then friendship is different. Friendship is like a family spirit. When your colleague is not performing well, it disturbs your work, and you say, “Get it together! You know, they’ll throw you out of here one of these days if you don’t get it together.”

That is what you say to a colleague but to a family member, you say, “When in the world are you ever going to get it together? But we can’t throw you out because you’re part of the family.”

That is different. That is friendship and in that friendship there is trust. We know we are going to be accepted. We don’t have to have a masquerade where everyone acts out to be a pure devotee in a Hare Krsna community. We can just be more honest. If there is friendship, we can just be who we are and still be accepted. In that way, we can get some real human support which is what we need!

Creating friendships

KKS_friendshipIn a small temple, with predominately congregational devotees – that means devotees who are maintaining a life outside the temple and who have limited time and energy – I think we should appreciate the time spent together and maintain relationships. Because especially in a congregational gathering, more than ever, we need friendship. You know, it is like if you have a little military army living in a temple and all are on a mission. Even if there is no such friendship, still all are together in the same mission. But when you do not have that kind of driving energy then the only reason to come together is for friendship. So that is a big challenge but I think that is the key.

Like, we are here tonight, at somebody’s house and that is very nice, that is how it should be. If devotees have not been in your house for a while then you must start thinking about it and arrange for them to come. Even if your house is small, it does not matter – squeeze in somehow or other – because bonding is important. So we need to stay close and in an congregational setting, friendship is a big element, if you want to be with people. If you do not really want to be with them then you are not going to be with them. In the temple, whether you want to be together or not, you have to be for mangala aarti. But in a congregation, if you do not want to be together then why would you be? You only go to programs that you want to.

In friendship, you have to conquer people, do something to win them over. You have to do something that touches their heart, and then we have real friendships. Friendship can never be taken for granted and it is not cheap, but that is what we need. I guess, you can say big things about friendship but you can also make it very simple. In one way, a very simple approach is to not give each other a hard time – sort of, make it easy for each other and it counts for everybody, even at home! You know, friendship begins at home, if we just sort of try and make it easy for each other, that would help.

Devotee: Maharaj, does that not defeat the high thinking society ideal?

It depends on what you call easy. I did not mean that we should lose the purity but we should accommodate each other a lot and be sensitive to each other’s needs, that is what I meant. Making it easy for each other means that we should think of everybody’s needs, and not just of our own, then that creates friendship. So we try to think of the needs of others.

The vigilant eye of the vaisnavas

When a community makes a commitment, that's when the community can support each other in that way, and that is needed. It doesn't matter what shape that community exists but that is one function of sadhu sanga. We often think that the association of devotees is meant for inspiration. It's like:

"I need devotee's association to feel inspired and whenever I am with the devotees then I am so inspired".

But we see in the Caitanya-caritāmṛta, where a situation occurring, where Vallabhacharya came to visit Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, and was Vallabhacharya proud of his learning (he was a great scholar) and said that he had written a commentary on Srimad Bhagavatam. He mentioned that he was not in agreement with Śrīdhara Svāmī who was the original Bhagavatam commentator. So Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu had no appreciation for that, because he had Śrīdhara Svāmī at a highest regard. Threfore, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu did not want to hear the commentary of. Vallabhacharya. So when Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu didn't want to hear, then no body wanted to hear – not a single devotee was ready to hear and Vallabhacharya would go around saying:

"Please, listen to my commentary, since you will find it very interesting".

"No, sorry……I have no time….I really have to go".

Everybody would make excuses and some said:

"No way!"

And some were blunt, but one devotee was very soft by nature, namely Gadādhara. Gadādhara was one of these soft natured person and Vallabhacharya had just cornered him and overpowered him with his energy by saying:

"You will hear my commentary".

Gadādhara said:

"No, please!"

" Yes! You will!"

And he took his right hand and started reading to Gadādhara who was thinking:

"Oh, my god what will happen now? Lord Caitanya will surely understand, because he knows my heart and that I don't want to hear it. But the devotees will never tolerate that I heard the commentary, because they are not so tolerant".

So that particular passage is interesting because that shows another aspect of devotee association, and shows the intolerance of the devotees. Or what is sometimes referred to as peer pressure….or you could say something like the village mentality. Now we are living in the village and if you act different in the village then the whole village is down on you! So everyone is living in fear of the villagers.

So the devotee community is something like that…it's like living in a village, and we are a bit worried about being seen by the neighbours because they know that you're going to cop it. Those dynamics are actually healthy – we need a bit of that…..we need a bit of the vigilant eye of the vaisnavas, so to keep us from becoming degraded, since the tendency to glide down is very strong…..very strong!
