(Kadamba Kanana Maharaja, 29 December 2011, Munich, Germany)

Our objective is to purify ourselves.  If we are developing a little bit of humility… humility doesn't mean that we walk around all day long saying:
"I am so fallen!"
"How fallen am I?"
"Boy, O boy, I am fallen! I am sinful! I am terribly fallen!"

That's not where humility ends.  That's a step on the way.  But the next step is, 'Therefore, I need purification.'  So if one is humble, the next step is to look for purification.  And that is our next step – to look for purification.

One who is not humble will not be able to surrender to all the demands required for purification.  So if we are serious about purification, we must make a real endeavor.

Four symptoms of Kali-yuga

GLORIOUS KRISHNA

Four symptoms of Kali-yuga

Posted: 23 Jan 2012 03:06 AM PST

Bhima was approached to solve four riddles by the Personality of Kali and being unable to answer, Bhima approached Yudhistar Maharaj who is Dharamraj. Yudhistar Maharaj replied to the questions as follows:

1. A scare crow was standing in a field, but instead of protecting the crops, he began to eat them. What does that mean? Yudhistar Maharaj replied that in the age of Kali-yuga, those who are meant to protect you will exploit you. For eg, the safest place is the child in the womb of the mother, but in kali-yuga even the child in the womb will be unsafe and exploited.

2. A bucket of water was able to fill 4 other pots but when the water from the 4 pots was filled back into the bucket, it could merely fill half the bucket. What does that mean? Yudhistar Maharaj replied that in the age of kali-yuga, 1 Father will be able to maintain 4 sons, but 4 sons will not be able to maintain 1 father.

3. From the eye of a needle, the whole elephant was able to pass but only his tail got stuck. What does that mean? Yudhistar Maharaj replied that in the age of Kali-yuga, all big criminals will escape freely but small criminals will be caught and punished.

4. A man with a string of rope was able to move the immovable Himalayas. What does that mean? Yudhistar Maharaj replied, in the Age of Kali-yuga, a mountain of sins can be removed immediately just by chanting the Holy Names of Krishna – Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare/ Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare.

kaler dosha nidhe-rajann
asti hy eko mahan gunah
kirtanad eva krsnasya
mukta-sangah param vrajet
My dear King, although Kali-yuga is an ocean of faults, there is still one good quality about this age: Simply by chanting the Hare Krsna mahā-mantra, one can become free from material bondage and be promoted
to the transcendental kingdom.

[srilaprabhupadanectar] Remembering Srila Prabhupada - Various instructions

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: krpamaya_gauranga@hotmail.com
Date: Mon, 23 Jan 2012 20:00:16 -0500 (EST)
Subject: [srilaprabhupadanectar] Remembering Srila Prabhupada -
Various instructions
To: rememberingsrilaprabhupada@yahoogroups.com

Various instructions

Since Prabhupada's visit to New Zealand in 1973, Tusta Krsna Swami had
left ISKCON and was heading up his own group outside the jurisdiction
of the local temple. Adamant that he would neither move back in the
temple nor work co-operatively with ISKCON, he had given up the
sannyasa dress and grown his hair.

However, Tusta Krsna had recently arrived in Melbourne and had visited
Prabhupada a couple of times. Srila Prabhupada had expressed his
appreciation for Tusta Krsna's service, especially his time spent in
Bombay and his opening of the Auckland centre. Prabhupada had been
kind and encouraging to him, gently coaxing him to again take up the
role, and dress, of a sannyasi.

In the evening, Tusta Krsna again visited. He had been making genuine
attempts to take Prabhupada's instructions to heart and had cut his
hair short. Prabhupada appreciated Tusta's attempts but didn't let up
in his preaching to bring Tusta back to full spiritual health. Tusta
Krsna sat with a few other devotees as Prabhupada spoke about the need
for following rules and regulations.

Spiritual purity and strength, he explained, were the results of
surrendering to the order of the spiritual master. If one did not
surrender, and did not strictly adhere to the rules and regulations,
then the chanting would take a long time to bring him to the
perfectional stage. Prabhupada recommended that although in all
circumstances the chanting should continue, proper conditions should
also be there. He gave an example: If one ignited a fire from dry
wood, the fire would blaze immediately. If the wood was moist,
however, it would only produce troublesome smoke.

"So pure devotional service is the flame. All other things are smoke.
You must get the flame. Otherwise your business will not get done. So,
naturally, we fan when there is smoke, phat-phat-phat. As soon as
flame comes, there is no smoke. So again fan it, let the flame come.
Then everything will be all right. Otherwise be satisfied with the
smoke. You are cooking with smoke for three hundred years." The
devotees laughed at the humourous exchange.

Srila Prabhupada proceeded to tell an amusing story.

"People are generally inquisitive to see some yogic magic, so one day
a rich man approached a yogi and asked him: 'What have you learned
about yogic perfection?' The yogi replied that he could, in the
severest winter season, dip himself into the water at night and
practise his yoga. The rich man asked him how long he could remain in
the water and he answered, 'All night'.

"The rich man said to the yogi, 'If you can remain in the water
overnight in the severest cold, then I shall give you such and such
presentation'. So the yogi agreed and he did it, and in the morning
when the rich man came back, (either he had no money or he did not
want to honour the agreement), he declined to pay the yogi. The rich
man said to his one adviser, 'What shall I do?' His adviser agreed,
'No, no sir. You cannot give the money.' The rich man asked why, and
his adviser answered that the yogi had actually warmed himself from a
lamp on the roof of a temple some distance away from the lake."

Prabhupada explained that in India, during the Karttika month, one of
the Vaisnava principles is to mount one akasa-pradipa on the top of
the temple. A bamboo tripod is placed on top of the temple roof and on
the top of the tripod is a lamp.

At this point, Prabhupada explained, the rich man and his adviser told
the yogi that he was not eligible to claim his prize because he had
used the heat of the lamp to tolerate the cold, even though it was
three miles away. "The yogi was a poor man," said Srila Prabhupada,
"so what can be said?" Prabhupada continued his story.

"The rich man had a second servant. So the yogi appealed to him, 'See,
I took so much trouble and he [the rich man] did not pay me anything.'
The servant of the man told the yogi: 'So don't worry. I shall see
that you are paid.'

"Next morning, the second servant was asked by the rich man to
accompany him on an important business mission. The rich man had
already advised the servant that he should be ready to go at ten. So
at nine o'clock, a question came from the rich man via a message as to
whether the servant was ready. The servant sent a message back to the
rich man, 'No, just now I am cooking. Then I shall finish my cooking,
take my meals and then we shall go.'

"After some time, another messenger came and inquired, but the answer
was still the same, 'I am cooking and the cooking is not yet done.'
More time passed. Eventually the rich man himself came in a very angry
mood. 'So why are you making me late? Why did you not come?' The
servant answered: 'I am just cooking. As soon as my rice is finished,
I will take and then come."

"The rich man was furious: 'Where are you cooking?'

'Here,' answered the servant, indicating a pot of rice on top of three
tall bamboos with a fire a very large distance from the pot. 'What
kind of cooking is this?' the rich man asked. The servant answered,
'No, there is heat. It is going on'."

The devotees laughed along with Srila Prabhupada. "The rich man was
very angry: 'How have you done this? Such nonsense!' The servant
answered, 'No, if the temperature from the lamp on the roof of the
temple could protect that man who was in the water all night, why
won't it be cooking my rice?'"

Prabhupada summed up the story: "Then the rich man could understand
that this is the reply. So that man [the yogi] was paid. So this kind
of progress, cooking, three miles above a pot on a little fire, it
will not act. There must be proper adjustment of cooking. Then you can
cook food and eat. A little smoke or a little fire, and three miles
away the cooking pot -- in this way cooking is a useless attempt. One
must be serious to cook. There is a method how to cook. If you don't
adopt that method and you cook in your whimsical way, you will never
be able to eat. If you say 'I shall cook in my way', and if you adopt
that process, will it help? Na sa siddhim avapnoti na sukham na param
gatim."

It was clear that the story was particularly directed to Tusta Krsna
Swami. The man "cooking with smoke three miles away from the pot"
could not expect to enjoy a meal in the near future. Similarly,
Prabhupada was clearly reminding Tusta Krsna Swami that if he chanted
without following the standard rules and regulations, then the result,
the ultimate goal of the chanting, pure love of God, would be a long
time coming.

Devotee said:
I want to talk.
I want to preach.
I want to give advice.
I want to give tips.
I want to give people success tools.
I want to give people ideas.
I want to give people solutions.

Gita Coach said:
That is nice.
But if you really want to help people, you have to SHUT UP.
You have to listen to people first.
You have to understand them first.
Understand what they want.
Understand what they are going through.
Understand what they think.
Understand how they feel.
Understand what they need in order to succeed.
And in order to understand, you have to first LISTEN attentively and deeply.
Not talk.

THE POWER OF GIVING 1

via GITA COACHING by Akrura on 1/11/12

There is much sadness in the world, but there are also
unlimited ways to make a positive difference.
You can gain tremendous benefits from giving. Among
these benefits are new friends, a feeling of security, better
health, happiness, and a sense of pride. You are at your
best when you make a difference and contribute.
Passion for a worthwhile cause helps you tap into your
creativity.
You need only so much as an individual to be happy.
Therefore, to live to your potential and create abundance,
you need to do something larger than yourself—thus the
need to give.
You are a conduit—the more you allow giving to flow
through you, the more abundance flows back into your
life. The more you give, the more you receive.
Giving is a beautiful experience.

THE POWER OF GIVING - key points of chapter 1

Prabhupada Cares

Sent to you by dinesh via Google Reader:

via GITA COACHING by Akrura on 1/15/12

A small but significant incident at New Vrindaban on June 26 1976
illustrates Srila Prabhupada's care for devotees:

"Shortly after eight thirty he [Prabhupada] brought the meeting to an end.
As he prepared to retire to the house, he looked at one of the women,
Gopalasyapriya dasi, who was rather under dressed considering the chill of
the evening. He was concerned and he turned to Kuladri, the temple
president. "Um hmm. This girl? This cloth is sufficient? So you have no
covering? They do not require covering?"

Kuladri was casual about it, trying to explain it away to assuage Srila
Prabhupada's disquiet. "It is warm for us, Srila Prabhupada."

But Srila Prabhupada wouldn't allow it to be passed off lightly. "No, if
they require, they must be supplied. You must ask them what you need, and
provide them. Because they do not say, you'll also keep silent -- that's not
good. Every month they should be asked what they need. Necessities, they
must be supplied. We have already discussed this point. The women, they
require protection, children, women."

Transcendental Diary, Hari-sauri dasa

HOW TO EAT?

Sent to you by dinesh via Google Reader:

via GITA COACHING by Akrura on 1/15/12

We should not eat more or less.
Better eat less than eat more.
You'll not die by eating less.
But you may die eating more.
People die for overeating, not for undereating.
This should be the principle.
Here... Medical science always forbids not to eat more than you require.
Voracious eating is the cause of diabetes, and undernourishment is the cause of tuberculosis.
This is the medical science.
So we should not take under, neither more.
- Srila Prabhupada

YOU MATTER

Sent to you by dinesh via Google Reader:

via GITA COACHING by Akrura on 1/15/12

One simple proof that you matter is that both maya and Krsna do a lot of marketing to draw your attention and get you on their side. Krsna (God) cares about you and wants you to be happy. Maya wants to distract you from Krsna and will ultimately leave you empty-handed.

Sacidevi / Gangamata Goswamini

I am not in favour of feminism as you find in the beginning of the article. When Srila Prabhupada was asked by a devotee lady that if women can go back to Godhead, He said no! You cannot go back Home if you think yourself as woman. These are exceptional cases and moreover they need to be protected by men at all times for their own good. In the name of freedom women are worst exploited in the modern world. There are many unscrupulous men waiting to find a chance to exploit women in every way. So in majority of the cases it's not good for women to go around like this and accept disciples. It's a dangerous endeavor for both women and the society at large.

Nowhere it's said in the scriptures that women can live independently but for men,it is said so. This is not male egoism but protecting women and empowering them in such a way that it is naturally good for them.

I am sharing this post today (from http://www.stephen-knapp.com/women_in_vedic_culture.htm) because this is a very nice story and example of a devotee who was giving great lectures and also giving initiation as bona fide spiritual master in India. She was disciple of Haridas Pandit, she lived at the Sarvabhauma's home and she was the guru of many Pandits from the Jagannath Puri temple and she also gave initiation to the King of Puri. That's our tradition and, for those who are in ISKCON like me, I must say that this is the tradition that Srila Prabhupada has brought to us. The nowadays nonsense that women don't give lecture (or if they give, they are allowed only to speak at home programs) or they don't give initiation, and also the excuse that in India it has to be like that due to the Indian culture, is not true. We can see here that even in a place like Bengal and even so much time ago, those things were happening. We should not be mislead by the uneducated people who are under the influence of other religion's prejudice or are slaves of their own mental inventions. I hope you all enjoy the story of this great devotee.

Sri Gangamata Goswamini was born as Sachi, the princess daughter of King Naresh Narayana in the present state of Bengal. She was a great devotee of God from her early childhood. As she grew and entered into her education, she studied grammar and poetry but soon spent all her time studying the Vedic scriptures. All the boys were attracted to her and her father began to think of arranging for her marriage. But she was not the least bit attracted to any young men. She was always filled with thoughts of Madana Gopala, Krishna.
Gradually the king and queen grew old and left this world, leaving the responsibilities of governing the kingdom to Sachi. She accepted these, but later arranged to allow other relatives to govern in her place as she went to see the holy places on the plea of traveling throughout the kingdom. After so much travel, she still was not satisfied and wanted to find a spiritual master. Then she went to Jagannatha Puri and while having darshan of the Deities she was inspired with an inner message to go to Vrindavana.
After arriving in Vrindavana she met Haridas Pandit, who was solely devoted to Lord Gauranga and Nityananda. Sachi was filled with ecstasy and after meditating for several days Haridas Pandit gave her shelter, upon which she prayed to him with tearful eyes begging for his mercy for spiritual advancement. Haridas discouraged her from staying in Vrindavana, telling her that it is not possible for a princess to remain absorbed in bhajan with little to eat and no comforts. But she stayed and gradually gave up her nice clothes and opulent ornaments. Noticing this determination, Haridas instructed with his blessings that she could wander throughout Vrajamandala and beg from place to place as a renounced devotee. Having accepted Haridas as her guru, she was filled with joy. Thereafter, freed from her false ego and dressed in rags, she went begging alms and exhibited her intense renunciation which astonished all the devotees.
Her body grew thin and physically exhausted. She would sleep on the banks of the Yamuna and rise to sweep the Lord's temple, have darshan and listen to the Bhagavatam classes. Haridasa became very happy seeing the intent of Sachi and promised to give her initiation into the mantra. Haridasa Pandit had another disciple named Lakshmipriya who at that time arrived in Vrindavana. She used to chant 300,000 names of Krishna everyday. Haridasa sent her to live near Sachi on the banks of the Radhakunda. Everyday Lakshmipriya and Sachi would circumambulate Govardhana Hill. Thus they continued in their devotional service to the Lord with great determination. Then one day Haridasa Pandit instructed Sachi to return to Jagannatha Puri to continue her bhajan there and preach what she learned of Sri Chaitanya's teachings. However, most of Sri Chaitanya's associates had already left the planet.
Sri Sachidevi returned to Jagannatha Puri and stayed in Sarvabhauma's house where she engaged in bhajan and gave classes on the Srimad-Bhagavatam. She also established first class worship of the Damodara Salagram in that house, which was crumbling and where few people ever visited. However, her classes became famous and many people started to attend to listen to her discourses. One day even the king of Puri, Mukunda Dev, came to hear her Bhagavatam class, and he was astounded. He wanted to make a nice offering to her in appreciation for her worship to Lord Krishna, and that night he had a wonderful dream in which Lord Jagannatha appeared to him and said to offer her a place on the banks of the Sveta (White) Ganges.
The next day the king went to make the offering to Sachidevi, but she was not inclined to accept any wealth or comforts and wanted to refuse. The king persisted and not wishing to violate Lord Jagannatha's order, he issued a decree dedicating a holy ghat by the side of the White Ganges after Sri Sachidevi. The decree stated that she was a princess that gave up everything to come to Puri and preach the teachings of Lord Chaitanya.

The Only Means

"Therefore, as there is no qualification to practise Karma Yoga or any other Yoga and as there is no other course of action for one to follow, one should take refuge in My feet as the only way. Considering well the pitiful state that has befallen one, and considering also My qualities, one who resorts to Me with the full awareness that I am the only means, is liberated for ever." -

Even A Mleccha

Sent to you by dinesh via Google Reader:

via Indradyumna Swami's Facebook Notes by Indradyumna Swami on 1/21/12

"One in whom the eight kinds of devotion are found, even if he be a mleccha (westerner), is the best of brahmins, a sage, illustrious, an ascetic, a pandit. But I do not respect a Vedic scholar who worships Me without devotion. One who is devoted to Me, even if he is a chandala (dog-eater) is one whom I respect. He is to be given to and received from. Indeed he is to be worshipped as Myself."

Purifying Blunt Senses by Devotional Service

GLORIOUS KRISHNA

Purifying Blunt Senses by Devotional Service

Posted: 22 Jan 2012 06:22 AM PST

Lord Krishna Wallpapers 2010

1. Our senses should not be employed for sense gratification but for engagement in service of Krishna. This is the goal of human life.

2. A human is identified when he begins to inquire about the Absolute Truth and this implies not only to Hindus, but to Muslims, Christians and entire human race because it is a science. Just like two plus two is four is acceptable by all, so this inquiry into the Absolute is necessray for all human beings.

3. So from where to get this knowledge? The answer is by approaching a Guru, Tasmad Guru Prapadyante and ask him submissively. He will give knowledge because they are seers of truth.

4. How to identify Guru? The first qualification is that he should be a person with brahminical qualities like self control, tolerance, honesty, austerity, truthfulness, cleanliness and he should work like a Brahmana. (6 duties of a Brahmana are Study Vedic Scriptures, Teach Vedic Scriptures, Expert in Worship, Teaching others to Worship, Take Charity and Give Charity). But the most important qualification is to be a Vaisnava. Sat karma nipuno vipro, tantra mantra visaradaha, avaisnava gurur na syad, vaisnava sva paco guruh - Even if he is expert in all duties of a Brahmana and knows all the Vedic mantras but if He is not a Vaisnava or Devotee of Lord Krishna but is impersonalist, voidist or does not what is God then he cannot be taken as Guru. On the other hand a Vaisnava, who knows what is Visnu, what is God, even though coming from the family of dog-eaters, he can be guru. This is the injunction of the sastra. One who knows God, he cannot remain dog-eaters. But sometimes he comes from there. But sastra says, Yes, when he has learned the science of God, then he can be accepted as guru.

5. Even Krishna says, only a devotee can understand Me. (Bhakto si me sakha ceti, rahasyam hy etad uttamam).

6. So to know the Lord we have to do devotional service and free ourselves (i.e our senses) from all designations and then we can see God, Krsna. Eg: A blunt knife cannot cut properly, but if we sharpen the knife then we can cut nicely. So with our blunt senses we cannot see or understand Krishna, but if we purify our senses by devotional service then we can understand Krishna.

7. So to know Krishna, we have to take advantage of this treasure house of Bhagavad Gita and Srimad Bhagavatam. Instead of wasting time with newspapers which are thrown right after reading, we should take advantage of real knowledge of the Absolute Truth.

- Summary of Srila Prabhupada lecture on Srimad Bhagavatam 1.2.10

TRANSLATION
That very ancient science of the relationship with the Supreme is today told by Me to you because you are My devotee as well as My friend and can therefore understand the transcendental mystery of this science.

PURPORT
There are two classes of men, namely the devotee and the demon. The Lord selected Arjuna as the recipient of this great science owing to his being a devotee of the Lord, but for the demon it is not possible to understand this great mysterious science. There are a number of editions of this great book of knowledge. Some of them have commentaries by the devotees, and some of them have commentaries by the demons. Commentation by the devotees is real, whereas that of the demons is useless. Arjuna accepts Śrī Kṛṣṇa as the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and any commentary on the Gītā following in the footsteps of Arjuna is real devotional service to the cause of this great science. The demonic, however, do not accept Lord Kṛṣṇa as He is. Instead they concoct something about Kṛṣṇa and mislead general readers from the path of Kṛṣṇa's instructions. Here is a warning about such misleading paths. One should try to follow the disciplic succession from Arjuna, and thus be benefitted by this great science of Śrīmad Bhagavad-gītā.

Q: Did Krishna create the jiva soul (atma)? Bhagavad-gita 2.12 says soul was never created. So is God only a maintainer? Is there a difference and gradation between Vaikuntha and Goloka Vrindavan. All the previous acharyas like Shankara, Ramanuja, and Madhva have talked about Vaikuntha. I have heard about Goloka Vrindavan only in ISKCON.
Hari Bol!

Answer: You are misquoting Bhagavad-gita 2.12. Krishna does not say that the soul is not created. He says that the soul is eternally existing. That is something different. Krishna says in Bhagavad-gita 10.8 that everything is emanating from Him. Therefore we can understand that the souls are the eternal creations or emanations of the Lord. Accepting the truth of both statements, it is very easy to understand that Krishna is eternally emanating the souls from Himself. So, the jivas, the souls, are not created by God at a certain point in time. They are eternally existing as emanations or creations of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

It is not that only the devotees in ISKCON talk about Goloka Vrindavan. Millions of years ago at the beginning of universe Lord Brahma revealed the glories of Goloka Vrindavan in the Brahma Samhita as the topmost planet in the spiritual sky:

goloka-nāmni nija-dhāmni tale ca tasya
devi maheśa-hari-dhāmasu teṣu teṣu
te te prabhāva-nicayā vihitāś ca yena
govindam ādi-puruṣaṁ tam ahaṁ bhajāmi

"Lowest of all is located Devi-dhama [mundane world], next above it is Mahesa-dhama [abode of Mahesa]; above Mahesa-dhama is placed Hari-dhama [Vaikuntha, the abode of Hari] and above them all is located Krishna's own realm named Goloka. I adore the primeval Lord Govinda, who has allotted their respective authorities to the rulers of those graded realms."

The Lake of the Mind will eventually Settle Down

Posted: 21 Jan 2012 11:21 AM PST

"During the japa session, as the mind howls, don't give up the chanting. However bad the mind's demands, don't give in; let's keep chanting till we complete our daily quota. The lake of mind will eventually settle down. But be rest assured, tomorrow as you sit for another japa session, the mind will once again agitate. Again the solution is the same; do not react."

Association with Krishna

Krsna Prasad

Posted: 21 Jan 2012 09:38 AM PST

We are devotees of Krsna. We are meant for eating the remnants of foodstuff offered to Krsna… If you want to conquer the tongue, then you fix up your mind that you shall not take anything which is not offered to Krsna. Then your tongue will be controlled. Tara madhye jihva ati lobhamaya sudurmati. Tongue is the bitterest enemy of the living being. The tongue is dragging. Jihva. "Kindly give me this immediately. Kindly give me this wine immediately. Kindly give me this tea immediately. Kindly give me this cigarette immediately. Kindly give me this meat." Why? Control. Krsna says, patram puspam phalam toyam [Bg. 9.26]. So we have to take prasadam, eat Krsna prasadam. Then naturally the other things will be negativated.

How to become Humble?

Devotee: How to become humble?

Maharaj: Before coming to the ashrama your attitude towards the devotees were sentimental, somewhat sentimental. And now it is becoming practical. So there is a difference, that is because now you are seeing that from a distance when you looked at them it was so easy to look at everyone as pure devotees, address them as 'prabhu' and become prepared to do anything for them. But when you come close then you began to see that they have their defects, or their dealings sometimes are not that desirable. So whatever it is that you recognize, just as you are practicing to become a devotee, others are also practicing to become a devotee. So they may not be a pure devotee now but some day they'll also become pure devotees. Just as some day you'll also become a pure devotee. So be patient and tolerant. And I tell you the spiritual life is very, very purifying. It's very purifying. I have seen with time how devotees change. Like, I remember when I joined there was one devotee who was so obnoxious. He was very difficult and nobody used to like him. Because he was so cantankerous, quarrelsome, proud, but now that devotee…actually, those days nobody wanted to associate with him but today everybody, he has become so pleasant that everybody loves him.  So how did he change? Because he is practicing the process and the process is purifying. So the point is when you are in the association of devotees don't be critical, but be tolerant and maintain a humble attitude. Yes, when you are close to them you will find many faults with them but at the same time you can consider if they have those faults, how many faults you have? That is how we should maintain our humble disposition and maintain our tolerance. That's how you become humble, as you asked how to become humble.

Knowledge and Devotion

Posted: 21 Jan 2012 09:34 AM PST

Question: Someone may have knowledge but if he doesn't have faith in the knowledge, [inaudible] because you were saying just knowledge is not enough. So if someone really has knowledge and has faith in it, he will definitely execute it also. So if one doesn't have faith then what he has done, studied or heard, can we really call it as knowledge?
BCS: Let's go back to that example I gave, knowledge of food and eating food. If you really have the knowledge of food then you will eat when you are hungry. You understand? Knowledge of the food means knowing the characteristic of food: what is the purpose of food? But just knowledge alone of the food is not enough. How to cook the food is not enough. You have to know how to satisfy your hunger. That is the purpose of food.

Question: In other words if someone has genuine knowledge he is going to be a devotee.
BCS: Yeah, right, devotion automatically has knowledge. Devotion is the mother. Bhakti Devi is the mother and she has two children, Jnana and Vairagya, knowledge and detachment. The person who is situated in pure devotional service he is in full knowledge and he is also detached from everything material.

Question: If someone has a, I mean he is not yet a pure devotee, fully purified, but he is engaged in devotional service and he is experiencing the bliss of devotional service. Such a person, if he doesn't cultivate knowledge at the same time side by side, so despite of being engaged in devotional service is it true that he can easily get distracted by other things?
BCS: Yeah. So, you see, at that stage of sadhana bhakti cultivation of knowledge is necessary. What you are saying is the stage of sadhana bhakti. He is not siddha. He didn't achieve perfection but he is practicing. So when you are practicing, what you are practicing? You have to understand that. Certain degree of knowledge is, cultivation of knowledge is necessary. Like, why do we have Bhagavatam class? We are not saying just always render service. We have called a Bhagavatam class. We have Bhagavad Gita classes. We have other arrangements for cultivation of or understanding the spiritual life.

I hope to make others hopeless about happiness in material life.

The materialist visits the sadhus with a great hope to seek blessings
for great material enjoyment. But a genuine sadhu will bring only
hopelessness to the materialist about happiness in material existence.
It's success for devotees when they see others becoming hopeless by
the preaching. And devotees become happy to see others becoming
hopeless of happiness in material existence.
The materialists will see that the devotees are saying that there's no
happiness in this world but How come they(devotees) are happy in this
world?
By Then,it's time for the materialists to understand that the devotees
are not in this world but in Spiritual world by consciousness-Excerpt
from a lecture by HH.Bhakti Vikasa Swami Maharaj in Rameshwaram Yatra
2012.

Ashtanga yoga is impractical for this age!

Yuga Dharma

Posted: 21 Jan 2012 09:40 AM PST

harer nama harer nama harer namaiva kevalam
kalau nasty eva nasty eva nasty eva gatir anyatha

"'In this Age of Kali there is no other means, no other means, no other means for self-realization than chanting the holy name, chanting the holy name, chanting the holy name of Lord Hari.' (Brihad Naradiya Purana.3.8.126; Caitanya Caritamrita 17.21)

This is the yuga dharma for the age of Kali. For the four yugas (Satya, Treta, Dvapar and Kali) there are four Dharmas.

krte yad dhyayato visnum
tretayam yajato makhaih
dvapare paricaryayam
kalau tad dhari-kirtanat
Whatever result was obtained in Satya-yuga by meditating on Viṣṇu, in Tretā-yuga by performing sacrifices, and in Dvāpara-yuga by serving the Lord's lotus feet can be obtained in Kali-yuga simply by chanting the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra.
(SB 12.3.52)

So Krte Yad dhyayato Visnum – In Satya yuga the process of deliverance was Meditation on the Lord. Does meditation mean sitting at one place and thinking of something or does it mean to make the mind vacant? To begin with, the mind's business is to think, so how can we make it vacant and stop thinking? Yoga is not the process of this age (kali-yuga) and we can consider why it is not a process for this age.

Yoga beings with leaving home and going to a solitary place. That is the pre-requisite for practicing yoga. Even better to go to the forest and best is going under the water and meditating which is not possible for people of this age. This yoga process is known as Astanga Yoga. (Asta – Eight; Anga – limbs/stages). The eight stages are:

1. Yama: External Purification, not only to have a clean body, wearing clean clothes but this also involves eating only Krishna Prasad.

2. Niyama: Internal Purification by following the rules and regulations (Cleaning the mind from all undesirable thoughts and prepare your mind to be clean).

3. Asana: This does not mean some physical exercise.  The purpose of asana is to utilize the body to reach the destination. For example, if you want to drive a machine, the first thing we have to do is sit properly in the right side. If we want to ride a plane, we have to sit in the cockpit and not in economy class seat and then we have to know how to ride the plane or if we want to ride a bicycle, we have to be seated in a proper position and should know how to use the machine in order to reach the destination. Similarly, this body is a machine. Yantra rudhani mayaya (BG 18.61). Yantra means machine, arudhani means to ride. So this human body is a very special machine, because when we get this machine, we can reach our ultimate destination, the spiritual sky, Goloka Vrindavan. In order to do that, we have to learn how to ride this machine.

4. Pranayama: Prana is actually the air which keeps the soul within the body. These airs control different activities. Don't we say the prana left, when somebody dies? So when the pranavayu left the body, it means the soul left. This Prana is synonomous to our breathing. Generally we think breathing consists of inhale and exhale. But Vedic understanding says there are 3 functions: inhale, exhale and retain. So the practice of yoga (umbaka) is actually meant to retain the life air within the body. The Purpose of pranayama is to retain life air within and stop inhaling and exhaling. This practically means to stop breathing by retaining the air.

5. Pratyahara: When the yogis stop breathing, then they are able to withdraw their senses from the sense objects. What do the senses do? The senses are constantly running towards the objects of the senses. Then as a result one develops attachment for them.
dhyāyato viṣayān puḿsaḥ sańgas teṣūpajāyate
sańgāt sañjāyate kāmaḥ kāmāt krodho 'bhijāyate
krodhād bhavati sammohaḥ sammohāt smṛti-vibhramaḥ
smṛti-bhraḿśād buddhi-nāśo buddhi-nāśāt praṇaśyati
While contemplating the objects of the senses, a person develops attachment for them, and from such attachment lust develops, and from lust anger arises. From anger, complete delusion arises, and from delusion bewilderment of memory. When memory is bewildered, intelligence is lost, and when intelligence is lost one falls down again into the material pool. (Bhagavad Gita 2.25-63).

So the yogi at that stage, he withdraws the senses from the sense objects. That means the eyes will be open, but the eyes will not register anything he sees. Sound will be there, ears will not register because we are not running to the sense objects anymore.

6. Dhyana: Then begins dhyana. When our senses are withdrawn from the sense objects, only then we are eligible to meditate. Otherwise everybody is meditating, but the problem is they are meditating on material objects like money, family etc but this Astanga-yoga is meant for meditating on the Supreme Lord. Where is the Supreme Personality of Godhead? Isvarah sarva bhutanam hrd-dese arjuna tisthati - He is seated in everyone's heart. (BG 18.61)

7. Dharana: This stage means focusing on the Supreme Personality of Godhead present in the heart and then when meditation is fixed that is called Dharana.

8. Samadhi: When one perceives the Supreme Lord in the heart, that is called Samadhi.

So this is astanga-yoga system. This is not only possible for us but it was not possible for people in treta yuga so Krishna devised the process of sacrifice.

Tretayam yajato makaih. This means sacrifice, yajna. Does sacrifice mean pouring some ghee in fire? Sacrifice really means giving up - for whom? For Krishna. This is for Krishna , this is not for me. This is how one used to reach to the point of realizing that even I belong to Krishna. My money is for Krishna. My children are for Krishna. My family, home whatever I have is for Krishna. Then finally even I belong to Krishna. That is the perfection of sacrifice in everything.

But in Dvapara people lost that ability to do that therefore Krishna introduced another process, Dvapare Paricaryayam – worship the Lord in the temple. That worship also was very elaborate. That we can see in ISKCON temples, although it has been simplified to a great extent, but we can see how difficult the process is. So temple worship includes getting up early in the morning at 3:30 AM, then take bath, then make arrangements for the Lord to wake-up. There were atleast 6 Arati's and we have to offer to the Lord 56 Bhogas. That is the process for Dvapara yuga.

In Kali-yuga we lost the ability to even worship the Lord properly, therefore the Lord gave a very simple process – yajnaih sankirtana prayair; yajanti hi su-medhasah – Those who are intelligent will worship Him through this chanting. (Srimad Bhagavatam 11.5.32).

Now just consider, to chant the holy name do we have to go to a forest? To chant the Holy Name do we have to perform sacrifice? To chant the Holy Name, do we have to visit a temple? No. We are all working and still practicing Krishna Consciousness and chanting the Holy Name. This way we can see, in this age of Kali-yuga, it is so simplified.

So this is how Krishna works. Krishna wants us to go back to Godhead. If the son goes away from the father, does the father make him feel very criticial and closes the doors for the son to return? No, the father will make all arrangements for the son to come back. Krishna is the Supreme Father and we are all His sons. That is the difference between Christianity and Krishna Consciousness. In Christianity, they think God has only one son but in Krishna Consciousness we have the clear understanding that not only human beings but every living entity is the son of God.

Therefore we see that as we are losing the ability to re-establish our relationship with Krishna, Krishna, the Supreme Personlaity of Godhead is making it easier for us. As we are becoming dull, incapable and diseased, the Lord is making the process easier and simpler so that everybody can benefit and go back to Godhead.

In other ages, we had to make elaborate arrangements. Eg: When Yudhistar Maharaj decided to perform Rajasuya Yajna, he sent Bhima, Arjun, Nakul and Sahadeva to four different directions to bring all the wealth to perform the sacrifice, bring so many qualified brahmanas and also to perform sacrifices we need pure ghee from cows. Then in Dvapara yuga we need to go to the temple where the deities of the Lord are there. But the chanting of Holy Name of the Lord can be performed by anyone, anywhere and just by hearing the Holy Name, people get purified. It is the perfect arrangement to help all living entities.
