Bhakti Yoga-Devotional Service to the Supreme Lord Sri Krishna

Bhakti Yoga-Devotional Service to the Supreme Lord Sri Krishna
Gopis performing Devotional Service to the Lordships Sri Sri Radha Krishna

Message on the appearance day of Lord Nrsimhadev from HH.Bhakti Vikasa Swami

Hiranyakashipu had everything in the Universe under his control. He
enjoyed any woman
of his choice, regardless of married or unmarried woman. He had all
facilities for his sensual enjoyment in full, of which an
exceptionally strong body was one.He was always intoxicated. There
was no one single person to contest his position.Indra was like an
insect to him. But still, his life was filled with
lamentation, fear, frustration. This clearly shows that no matter how
much material facilities we have, that alone can never ever make us
happy&satisfied.
We have to learn that we can remain happy only when we accept our
constitutional position as servant of Lord Krishna. Krishna will be
happy&we will also become happy then. Lord is more
intelligent, tactful&powerful than even the most powerful
demons-HH.Bhakti Vikasa Swami

Unity instead of division

(Kadamba Kanana Swami, Govinda Valley, March 2011)

Everyone is thinking: everything is for my pleasure, everything for my
purposes, for my comfort, for my protection, yes, for my profit, for ME!
Yes, everything and everyone!  And if we change that mood: no, we and
everything here is all for the one purpose to serve the Supreme Lord,
suddenly then, the world, instead of being divided, becomes united!
Suddenly we become harmonious.  If we recognise that all the energy, all
the trees, all the grass, all the animals are part of Krsnas creation, then
automatically, automatically our attitude changes.  If this is Krsnas
property, then one who is the servant of Krsna cannot treat it like a
rubbish bin.  Thats automatically taken care of.  Automatically there is
respect.  We wont just go with a chainsaw in the forest and see how many
trees we can cut down in an hour!

(Kadamba Kanana Swami, Govinda Valley, March 2011)

Its a very special time.  Not only did Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu give us a
great gift by the process of chanting Hare Krsna, but He stayed present
himself also.  And everyone who chants Hare Krsna, he helps.  He is
invisibly helping us all the time.  Thats very important, because without
it, we wouldnt make it.  We are weak, very weak.  But because invisibly Sri
Caitanya Mahaprabhu is present and is actively helping us, (Sanskrit), now,
in this time, it is possible for anyone and everyone to elevate himself to
the platform of a pure devotee and actually find complete happiness
within.  That is possible.

Humans are Krsna-like!

(Kadamba Kanana Swami, Brisbane, March 2011)

We can contemplate how Krsna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, appears
in this world and that Krsna is human-like, or one could say Humans are
Krsna-like. The human traits and human pastimes are corresponding with the
nature of Krsna. So Krsna in the spiritual world is also showing human
characteristics and Krsna is also showing many super-human characteristics,
again and again lifting Govardhan Hill or so many others when Krsna is
just all-powerful and there is no limit to what He can do.

So it is interesting how Krsna is the all powerful, omniscient Supreme
Personality of Godhead, and yet acting in a human way. In His pastimes,
Krsna is employing Yogamaya for this purpose. The cowherd boys may come up,
cover His eyes and say; Guess who I am! Just imagine Krsna saying; I am the
all-pervading Supreme Personality of Godhead, all-knowing You cant
surprise me! That would spoil the game!

By Using Everything To Serve Krishna

By becoming a family man or a king in the material world is not harmful, if
one accepts everything for Krishna's service. That necessitates clear
intelligence.

The Mayavadi philosophers say:

"Brahman sachin jigar mitchya " – This material world is false and only the
absolute truth is real.

However, the intelligent devotee in the line of the Lord Brahma and the
great sage Narada, or in other words of the Brahma Sampradaya:

"Does not consider this world as false – that which is created by the
Supreme Personality of Godhead cannot be false, but using it for enjoyment
is!"

Everything is meant to be enjoyed by the Supreme Personality of Godhead!
As confirmed in the Bhagavad Gita (5.29):

"bhoktāram yajña-tapasām

sarva-loka-maheśvaram"

The Supreme Personality of Godhead is the proprietor and an enjoyer, and
that everything should be dovetailed for his service, regardless of ones
circumstances – favourable or unfavourable, one should use everything to
serve the Supreme Lord. That is the perfect way to use one's intelligence!

Symptoms of Kali Yuga (part 2)

(Kadamba Kanana Swami 2011)

Here it is described that gradually the society at large will become more
and more difficult, and that there will be more and more taxation.

We are seeing that when you are driving around, it is incredible how much
toll you have to pay incredible and everything is taxed. You pay direct
tax to the government, then indirect tax and VAT. It is inconceivable on
how much tax is being paid ….80 90% were already working for the
government actually its a fact, 80% 90% of work is for the government,
either direct tax or indirect tax, and all the things we buy, and all the
tax is on that. That is the situation and it will increase and we see
instability.

It is being predicted sooner or later, that there will be great droughts!
Once that happens then everything will change, because then nothing will
grow. No vegetables will grow, and so it will become difficult to eat, then
meat eating will become more and more for the purpose of survival.

So, theres no doubt that this is destined to happen, because Bhagavatam is
describing it, and we are also seeing so many elements being described,
which is happening right now. So in this way, we can appreciate Srimad
Bhagavatam, which is describing the present and the future. We are already
discussing Kali Yuga this week –'Ugra-Karma', the activity of the Kali Yuga.

'Ugra-Karma', as Srila Prabhupada describes it as 'horrible work meant to
destroy the world'. So we are working in Ugra-Karma companies…. 'Ugra'
means aggressive, destructive, to destroy the world. You can call it
multinationals if you want to they pay us and what can we do? But just
abide by it.

They make us work ridiculous hours, they do not give you any chance to
live. It is almost impossible to chant your rounds and it's suffering to
chant in the midst of all that, and you have just been released on the
Saturday morning to come to the temple, which is your good fortune so it
is not that bad yet!!! They still allow you Saturday mornings off but they
say:

'We are working on that! We are working on it….. there are financial
crisis'.

Then everybody becomes afraid of losing their jobs, and then you have to
work overtime without pay to keep your job, which is now very complicated,
since due to the economic crisis, many people are working overtime without
pay and they gladly do so to keep their jobs so they can work again on
Saturday. Now, the shops are open on Sundays, because that's no longer the
day of the Lord! So we can work on that as well.

'Why waste the Lord's time?'

Anyway, now that we have the good fortune on Saturdays, so that we can
assemble in marginal numbers and we can discuss the Srimad Bhagavatam.

So one of the points that we discussed this week was that there is the ten
thousand year of the Golden Age in this age of Kali and that of course is
'our hope'. So we hope that it kicks in fast!!

It is said that it will start 5,000 years after the appearance of Lord
Krishna. So it should start shouldn't it? But maybe, it has already started
in a seed form and maybe the seed is just sprouting because, everywhere
devotional service is spreading and were seeing miraculous things. We are
seeing people from all over the world wearing tilak and chanting Hare
Krishna so something is definitely going on no doubt!

(Kadamba Kanana Swami 2011)

In the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna says:

Palam balavatam chamah .

This means that the strength of the strong is meant to protect the weak,
but in the age of Kali, it is described here as the opposite is taking
place the strong will exploit the weak. That, of course, is not new to the
world that is the history of the world already for a long time.

Call it colonialism, call it whatever you may want, but those who are
military stronger had exploited others. Now call it geopolitics…. so many
people think that America is interested in the oil in the Middle East but
that's not all what's going on.

Experts say, it's called geopolitics the strategy to make sure that
although 80% of the resources of the world are in between Europe and Asia,
still America will do whatever it can to retain it's position of supremacy
in the world.

It's called geopolitics, so it happens on a small scale exploitation and it
happens in families, it happens in marriage and abusive relationships where
basically one person is exploiting the other and using the strength
whoever is the stronger one will exploit the weak one.

So that is the demoniac mentality:

I am the enjoyer

I am very powerful

I am the controller.

This is the demoniac nature as described in the Bhagavad Gita. This
demoniac nature is very deeply rooted in the consciousness of the
conditioned soul. It is not that we are exceptions to the rule because all
the living beings are influenced by this illusory energy, which causes
desire and hate lust and envy.

This devotional service is diametrically opposed to this mood because
devotional service is based on the principal of 'dāsya' or service. Service
attitude is the one thing that is in the centre of spiritual life and it is
this dāsya where a devotee must therefore learn to become a servant.

It is not automatic, it comes by practice and therefore we must engage in
activities of service and that will gradually change our mentality from
being the monster and the enjoyer.

This tendency to be master is very deeply rooted, and it may come out again
also in devotional service. It is described that one may enjoy the side
benefits that come from devotional service, as one is engaging in
devotional service. It is natural and in this way again one begins to
instead of focusing on serving Krishna, again we develop the mood of being
the 'enjoyer.'

So, this is very deeply rooted deeply rooted a stumbling block on the
spiritual path which harasses us for a long time. We have to be on guard by
taking a humble position humility is the quality that is difficult to
develop, but at least a vaishnava can take a humble position by giving all
respect to others and by not taking any credit for himself.

It is like if we did some service and someone says:

Who did it?

It's not up to us to say:

I did it.

We should keep our achievements private, not looking for glorification –
and of course when the vaishnavas force us, then we are some what in an
embarrassed state that we will accept glorification but it is not that
this is something we are looking for. So trying to avoid is not so easy,
not easy at all, but that is our approach.

Temple&Holy place features!

Following is about the features of the temple and the holy place-Guruvayoor
This place was predominantly preached by Sankaracharya&so the people
here still have the influence of impersonalism even though they are so
much devoted to the deity here. Sankaracharya personally stayed for 41
days to preach about deity worship in the temple.
The temple is more like a home without much opulence like big towers
& the Lord is seen as a small boy-BalaKrishna to be taken care of
nicely by serving.
The darshan timings are restricted so that the Lord can be fed Bhoga
frequently&also given rest sufficiently. This is one of the richest
temples where 60 elephants are used for temple services. Elephants are
devotees as well. Not just dumb ones. One elephant devotee named
Keshav would not allow any tamer to get on him other than pujari with
deity for procession. Also he will not allow other elephants to take up
the deity procession when he's present. There's a classical dance
performed outside the temple about the Lilas of Krishna every night
which is very unique. Also there's chanting of Maha mantra in the
temple starting with Hare Rama Hare Rama...
There's full prasadam provided in the temple for 100s of devotees
everyday. Other unique thing here is marriages in the temple. As many
as 100 marriages of the local people is very common in the temple for
just one day. Tulabhara seva in which the devotees offer any specific
item like rice or sugar equal in weight to oneself. Non-Hindus are
also attracted to the Lord by this tulabhara seva in which case the
weighing bridge is brought outside the temple for them.
Prasadam is very famous here like other temples. This temple is very
famous only among south Indians&not much talked about in the northern
part of the country.
Narayaneeyam#
This is a literary work by a brahman named Bhattadir(unsure of the
exact name). Unlike Bhagavatam which is in passive voice describing
about the Lord, the verses are directly addressed to the Lord&is sung
in front of the Lord everyday. When composed, the Deity Himself
interfered&corrected the verses. Two instances are noted.
To keep the song Rhymic, the composer instead of using the syllables
Ra-ma used Ra or something but the deity asked him to use the syllable
"te" which means "unto You" signifying that the deity is Lord Rama
Himself.
In another instance when the composer asks the deity,I could not
understand why You have banished mother Sita.why have You done so? For
that the deity replied that It was only Lord Rama and not Himself.
So this shows the Lord is very tricky :)

Sthala Purana-Guruvayoorappan's temple

The following is Sthala Purana(history of the manifestation of the
temple) of Guruvayoor temple. The Presiding Deity of Guruvayoor has
been worshipped by Lord Sri Krishna Himself when He was personally
present in this planet 5000yrs ago. This deity is exactly of the four
handed small boy form as He appeared in front of mother
Devaki&Vasudeva. There's no history of Lord Chaitanya having visited
this temple. But that doesnt mean He didnt visit this temple. Also Krsna
Das Kaviraj Gosvami mentions that he has not listed all the temples
that Lord Chaitanya visited.
The Lord instructed Uddhava to take care of the deity after His
departure to the Spiritual World.Lets see how the Lord manifested
Himself here. His form here is exactly that of Lord Narayana&Narayana
Himself worships this deity.Uddhava consults Brihaspati, the Guru of
demi-gods to find a place to install the deity in the Bharata Varsha
which is as sacred as Dwaraka. And the deity gets submerged in the
water when Dwaraka was inundated.
Varuna takes in-charge of the deity&gives the deity to Vayu.
Vayu&Guru(Brihaspati-guru of demigods) takes the deity to install in a
suitable place.Meanwhile on the other side of the country-Kerala(which
was formed when Lord Parasurama throwed His axe) devotees suffering
from Rheumatism approached Lord Parasuram(living in Kerala) to relieve
them from the disease.
Lord Parasuram instructed the devotees to install the deity worshiped
by Krsna in Dwaraka to relieve them from the pain. Lord Parasuram
started to bring the deity&on His way near Palghat,He meets Guru&Vayoo
bringing the deity He's after.
Then they come to the place near a lake where Lord Shiva was
meditating.Lord Shiva
Seeing them says this is the place of Lord Narayana&you can install
the deity here.
The architect of celestial planets,Vishwakarma is callled for&the
temple is constructed.
Since Guru&Vayu brings the deity, the presiding deity is named as
GuruVayoorAppan. Appan-Natha/Lord-Notes from Guruvayoor yatra morning
class by HH.Bhakti Vikasa Swami.
More later....:)

He's the one!!

Posted: 11 May 2011 02:13 PM PDT

Transcribed by Annie

(Kadamba Kanana Swami, Stockholm, February 2011)

It is certainly good to look for inspiration in the association of devotees, but no, we must also learn to find it when we are completely alone. If we always try to fill the vacuum by being with others and hoping that something inspirational is going to happen, then each time when we are alone, we fall back in a vacuum. No, we must also learn to appreciate Krsna's presence when we are alone. He's here! He's always here! He's really here! We are never alone! Krsna is here in all His magnificent glories. So where is there a question of having to go to anyone when we have Krsna?

In any relationship, there's always a third person – Krsna, and He is by far more inspiring than any other person. It is Krsna that is the most inspiring person in any relationship. So, we have to remember the third person is always there, and ultimately, that he is the one! The one whom we are actually taking inspiration from!

Millions Of Miles Away!

Transcribed by Hina

(Kadamba Kanana Swami, Vrindavan, 2008)

A person who is detached from the modes of material nature remains just like the sun – reflected on water! When the sun is reflected on water, the movement of the water, or the coolness, or unsteadiness of the water cannot affect the sun! Similarly,

'Vasudeve bhagavati bhakti-yogah prayojitah'
(SB 1.2.7).

When one engages fully in the activities of the devotional service – bhakti yoga, he becomes just like the sun, which is reflected on water. Although, a devotee appears to be in the material world – actually he is in the transcendental world, as the reflection of the sun appears to be on the water, but is many millions of miles away from the water!

To Take Shelter Of The Holy Name!

Posted: 11 May 2011 01:03 PM PDT

Transcribed by Annie

(Kadamba Kanana Swami, Stockholm, February 2011)

In japa, you are confronted with yourself – completely! In japa, you
have to face with who you are! You know, when you are sitting in a group that
you can be ecstatic, because the whole group is ecstatic – so ecstatic,
but when we are alone with Krsna and His Holy Name, then we are
confronted with who we really are – where we are, and that's not so
good!

We're far from Krsna, that's the situation, and that's why japa is
more difficult, but exactly in that japa we must go, because there we
are alone with Krsna, and now we go before Krsna, and now we beg:

"Krsna, I have no taste. Krsna, my offering is poor, but Krsna, I want
something. I really want Krsna prema – please give it to me. I am
offering only broken names, I know I don't even want to pay the
price, but Krsna, please give it to me…..

Hare Krsna Hare Krsna
Krsna Krsna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama
Rama Rama Hare Hare

I have no love, please give me this. I want the taste of this Krsna
prema!"

So, we are beggars when we are chanting. We are beggars and we
have no capacity to chant, so we take shelter alone, all alone in
chanting the Holy Name, knowing that now I am associating with Krsna, and in this chanting the amazing thing happens, that we make an offering to Krsna and at the same time we get a darshan of Krsna! It's quite amazing how these two can go together! We are offering the name to Krsna, and at the same time Krsna reveals Himself to us! The more
we get into making the offering, the more the darshan starts happening, and we try to chant nicely and hear at the same time – then the whole element of offering and darshan begins to happen. Then we might get some mercy in the chanting, and we will actually become,
gradually, a little bit self-sufficient.

NIRANJANA SWAMI ON DEVOTEE CARE

Sent to you by dinesh via Google Reader:

via Gita Coaching by akrura@gmail.com on 10/05/11

At Trai dasa's (ACBSP) home in the mountains near Bologna, Italy

(Note: This an audio transcript so "+++" means there are few words that are inaudible.)

"We are trying to avoid the phenomemnon that expansion of Krsna consciousness means many people are coming but many people are also leaving." – Niranjana Swami

Ramacandra dasa ( RNS), from Villa Vrindavana, Italy:
What can you do besides hearing and chanting to care for devotees?

Niranjana Swami:
It is definitely a faith. It's a primary responsibility for anybody who's preaching Krsna consciousness. Preaching means hearing and chanting. But we have to protect the faith of the devotee. Bhaktivinoda Thakura gives the example. He speaks about sraddha, faith, in Tattva Viveka. He says, "Appearance of faith is like a birth of a new-born baby girl. When baby girl is born the parents are very careful to protect their +++ from hunger, from thirst, from heat and cold +++ dangerous features. And also, they give nourishment to the baby.
Therefore, he says, the awakening of the faith in the heart of a living entity is like a birth of a new-born baby girl. Once the faith is awakened, it needs to be protected. Protected from karma, jnana, mystic yoga perfections. Srila Rupa Gosvami says, bhukti-mukti-sprha yavat pisaci hrdi vartate. Bhukti and mukti are like two witches that haunt one like a ghost. As long as these two witches are within your heart then one will never be able to taste +++ of devotional service.
Bhaktivinoda Thakura used that analogy +++ of birth of a new baby girl in connection to faith. What we can do to help others +++ protect their faith in devotional service. As he said, faith is the most valuable currency. When you protect that faith and nourish, like a baby girl, +++ protect from dangerous elements but alsoo need to be nourished. Nourishment in sanskrit is pusti.
When we nourish sombody's faith that's the way to show our care for them. Nourishing their faith in devotional service and protect them from dangerous features of bhukti and mukti. And when somebod gets care in this way, they can undergo any difficulties. They can accept austerity. They can accept inconvenience. All +++ care is automatically fulfilled by caring for their faith.
It doesn't mean that we don't care for their bodies also. We also can do that too. +++ we have to be indifferent to their suffering. Vaisnava is never indifferent to other's suffering. But it's +++ how to protect their faith. That's how you can show care for others.

Akrura dasa:
How do you induce people to become counselors?

Niranjana Swami:
By caring for them.

Akrura dasa:
How long does it take?

Niranjana Swami:
It depends on the person.

Akrura dasa:
Many devotees say they are not qualified to be a spiritual guide.

Niranjana Swami:
Yes, that's true. Therefore, they are not forced to do it. Nobody is forced. It has to be voluntary. One is supposed to want to do it for the right reasons. +++ no personal benefit for being a counselor. So they have to do it for the right reasons.

Akrura dasa:
What do you mean there is no benefit?

Niranjana Swami:
Material benefit. Theya are not starting a separate preaching center. They are not extracting resources from the people they are taking care of. So there is no personal material benefit. Benefit is a satisfaction they get from caring for others. And the mercy that comes down for doing that confidential service. Tamal Krsna Maharaja told me in 1978. I was in the temple in Manhattan in Ney York City. We had about 40 devotees at the temple.
I was in charge of all the new devotees and guests. That was my responsibility. Some times there were as many as 30-40 people that I had to help. Tamal Krsna Maharaja said that Prabhupada told him that if you take care of Krsna's devotees Krsna takes care of you.
So you read the book ("Taking Care Of Krsna's Devotees")?

Akrura dasa:
Oh, yes. It's a gem.

Niranjana Swami:
This year devotees are waitng for the number two. Either volume two or revised edition.

Akrura dasa:
Many devotees say they would like to be a caregiver or a counselor, but they don't have time. They have so many things to do. How do you respond to that?

Niranjana Swami:
+++ Right in this present moment, I was asked to help in Hungary. They are just staring their (devotee care) system there. Last week we had a meeting with devotees who live outside and we discussed that threadbare.
It can go either way. Sometimes they have a good reason why they cannot. That's why they shouldn't be pushed. Sometimes there is no proper utilization of time. And sometimes people are not really convinced +++ And if they are the'll find the time +++ They'll set their priorities +++ They'll find time. What I experienced, devotees who really get absorbed in it, especially the grhasthas who are working and maintain their family, that what it really comes down to, it's recreation +++

Akrura dasa:
Many are afraid it will be a burden.

Niranjana Swami:
It is like that, but when they get mercy starts flowing, it's a higher taste.

Akrura dasa:
How many counselors you have in Ukraine?

Niranjana Swami:
160. Not all of them are +++ Some of them are "in training".

Akrura dasa:
Thank you.

The Topmost Knowledge & The Secret behind!

Bhagavad-gita As It Is | Part [BG.9.03]

TEXT 2

raja-vidya raja-guhyam

pavitram idam uttamam

pratyaksavagamam dharmyam

su-sukham kartum avyayam

TRANSLATION

This knowledge is the king of education, the most secret of all secrets. It is the purest knowledge, and because it gives direct perception of the self by realization, it is the perfection of religion. It is everlasting, and it is joyfully performed.

PURPORT

This chapter of Bhagavad-gita is called the king of education because it is the essence of all doctrines and philosophies explained before. There are seven principal philosophers in India, Gautama, Kanada, Kapila, Yajnavalkya, Sandilya, Vaisvanara, and, finally, Vyasadeva, the author of the Vedanta-sutra. So there is no dearth of knowledge in the field of philosophy or transcendental knowledge. Now the Lord says that this Ninth Chapter is the king of all such knowledge, the essence of all knowledge that can be derived from the study of the Vedas and different kinds of philosophy. It is the most confidential because confidential or transcendental knowledge involves understanding the difference between the soul and the body. And the king of all confidential knowledge culminates in devotional service.

Generally, people are not educated in this confidential knowledge; they are educated in external knowledge. As far as ordinary education is concerned, people are involved with so many departments: politics, sociology, physics, chemistry, mathematics, astronomy, engineering, etc. There are so many departments of knowledge all over the world and many huge universities, but there is, unfortunately, no university or educational institution where the science of the spirit soul is instructed. Yet the soul is the most important part of this body; without the presence of the soul, the body has no value. Still people are placing great stress on the bodily necessities of life, not caring for the vital soul.

The Bhagavad-gita, especially from the Second Chapter on, stresses the importance of the soul. In the very beginning, the Lord says that this body is perishable and that the soul is not perishable. That is a confidential part of knowledge: simply knowing that the spirit soul is different from this body and that its nature is immutable, indestructible and eternal. But that gives no positive information about the soul. Sometimes people are under the impression that the soul is different from the body and that when the body is finished, or one is liberated from the body, the soul remains in a void and becomes impersonal. But actually that is not the fact. How can the soul, which is so active within this body, be inactive after being liberated from the body? It is always active. If it is eternal, then it is eternally active, and its activities in the spiritual kingdom are the most confidential part of spiritual knowledge. These activities of the spirit soul are therefore indicated here as constituting the king of all knowledge, the most confidential part of all knowledge.

Without the Bhagavatam, you are a ghost!

Without the Bhagavatam, you are a ghost!
It's like that because the Bhagavatam is the very foundation of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu's movement.

Meditating on the spirit of sacrifice

Posted: 10 May 2011 12:02 PM PDT

Priya Vrata was being called upon by Lord Brahma to suddenly give up his plan, his plan for becoming self realised, which was a good plan  to stay disentangled. And he had to take up some entanglement to become a greater influence of Krishna consciousness in the world.

So it is very nice to meditate a little bit on this spirit of sacrifice and each and all of us can try and awaken a little bit more spirit of sacrifice. Sacrifice for the interest of this movement, rather than just:

'My spiritual life is a very ,very  nice spiritual life with a very, very nice spiritual ashrama with lots of nice spiritual pictures on the wall and all the flowers are offered to Krishna and everything is so spiritual and so beautiful and so wonderful and so great…'

'But in my heart, there is a vacuum, because in my heart I'm still more concerned with my own comfort, than with the comfort of Krishna. And therefore my whole Krishna world is still not enough to change the condition of my heart.'

The soft-hearted form of the Lord

Posted: 10 May 2011 01:55 AM PDT

That form with nails like thunderbolts, that form with golden manes- golden-white manes- that are decorated with drops of blood, that form is the soft hearted form of the Lord. In that form the Lord is showing His extraordinary soft hearted nature. Therefore Nrsimhadeva is extremely gentle and extremely soft because He appeared particularly in great anger when His devotee was being attacked. So it shows actually the soft heartedness of the Lord and I like to meditate on Lord Nrsimhadeva in that mood…

Great Personalities

Posted: 10 May 2011 12:43 AM PDT

(Transcribed by Bhakta Cameel)

Great sages are personalities who have knowledge.  They are not acting just according to their own ideas but great sages have absorbed, they have heard, they have absorbed transcendental knowledge and they have implemented it in their lives.  They have taken shelter.  The essence is that Krsna gives us so many directions in so many ways.  He gives us many ways to take shelter.  He appears in the form of His name – We can take shelter by reciting.  We can take shelter of the meaning of the Maha Mantra and we can in this way understand what actually our duty is – serve Krsna, the all attractive Supreme Lord and then happiness will be the result.  We can take shelter of the Deities.  There are many shelters all along.  But if we don't take shelter then even if these shelters are there the result will not come.  So the sages are those who have adjusted their lives according to the directions and desires of Krsna.  Thus such sages are highly qualified.  Their desires have become purified.  Because in the beginning we may come with so many desires, because the living entity by nature is pleasure seeking.  And when we are forgetful of Krsna then our search for pleasure will become linked to the material energy.  Its inevitable.  It must happen.  If we are not full of Krsna and full of desire to serve Krsna then surely so many other desires will awaken in us automatically, immediately. And the opposite is also true.  As the heart becomes filled with service to Krsna material desires disappear more and more and become insignificant and become no longer so burning so pressing, so difficult to overcome.  They actually diminish day by day and disappear into the background until eventually they disappear altogether.

Spiritual Nourishment

Posted: 09 May 2011 09:22 PM PDT

A lecture given by HH Kadamba Kanana Swami, 29 April 2011, Radhadesh, Belgium

Jaya Jaya Sri Caitanya Jaya Nityananda
Jaya Advaitacandra Jaya Gaura bhakta vrnda

So I chose two very famous verses from the Sri Caitanya Caritamrta and I'll explain a little later why.

sei panca-tattva mili' prthivi asiya
purva-premabhandarera mudra ughadiya
pance mili' lute prema, kare asvadana
yata yata piye, trsna badhe anuksana

 Translation

The characteristics of Krsna are understood to be a storehouse of transcendental love. Although that storehouse of love certainly came with Krsna when He was present, it was sealed. But when Sri Caitanya Mahäprabhu came with His associates of the Panca-tattva, they broke the seal and plundered the storehouse to taste transcendental love of Krsna. The more they tasted it, the more their thirst for it grew.

(Cc. Adi 7.20-21)

 (Purport)

(Invocatory prayers)

Hare Krsna!

Prabhupada is there

So the reason why I chose this verse is because it is described how the members of the Panca Tattva plundered the store house of love of God and after breaking the seal they entered. They plundered that storehouse to taste the transcendental love of Krsna and the more they tasted it, the more their thirst for it grew. So this is the theme of spiritual nourishment and that is the kind of theme I wanted to meditate on this morning.  We all feel a great need, we are in desperate need to somehow or other to find such nourishment. It is widely available, it is distributed everywhere now by the mercy of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and His pure dedicated followers. And we in particular remember in this regard, Srila A.C Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada to whom we are totally indebted because every inch of our spiritual life Prabhupada is there.

Badri Narayana Prabhu wo always comes up with nice stories, tells how he wanted to do some adventurous preaching. And he thought, "I want to go to an unthread territory, some place where Krsna consciousness has not yet reached." So he looked at the map of the world and chose New Guinea, which is indeed somewhat of an unusual place because there's still a good part where there are active cannibals and so on. So it's kind of a preacher's paradise! Badri decided to go there and after a long journey all the way from the west coast of America, he finally arrived in New Guinea.  When he came into the hotel, the man behind the reception was reading Prabhupada's book and he realised that Prabhupada was already there! So it is a fact that wherever we go- not only wherever we go in the world but wherever we go in spiritual life- Prabhupada was already there!

We are like chapati dough

Whatever we go through in our growth, in our development, little by little…we are like chapati dough, and the chapati dough is being pummelled with two fists, beating on that dough, kneading on that and shaping the dough. At first when we come to Krsna consciousness we are as hard as a rock and it is difficult to put us in any shape. But gradually, by the association of the devotees we become purified and gradually our heart softens.

When I joined Krsna consciousness in Vrndavana, after about one week I was in charge of the restaurant and somehow or other I had a real problem in that restaurant with chapati cooks because first I had a Bengali who didn't understand anything and who just kept on rolling chapatis like a machine even after the guests had left. And when I tried to tell him to stop, he wouldn't. Then when I took his arm he attacked me and then made politics as Bengalis do and said that I had attacked him (laughter). So it was a whole thing. Anyway, I fired him! And then there was a senior disciple of Srila Prabhupada who somehow or other became my chapati cook and his name was Rohini Kumar Prabhu. He was cooking chapatis and one day I had 25 guests and an average of four chapatis each…that's 100 chapatis! So the kitchen was downstairs and I called down, "100 chapatis!" which I guess is a bit of a shock when you're a chapati cook! And no chapatis came, not a single chapati came up and Indian guests are not so polite when they want to be fed. They were banging their cups on the table and were saying, "chapatis!" So again I called out in despair, "chapatis!" and then still no chapatis. So then I called out one more time, "chapatis!" and then suddenly the door flung open and Rohini Kumar flew into the room and on his finger he had made with chapati dough the head of a Joker. He put it under my nose and he said, "no chapatis!"

So gradually in the course of our devotional service, we become a little more flexible. Little by little the devotees are somehow or other gradually bringing out some detachment and bringing us to a point where we just say, 'okay, Krsna, you are the only shelter…' In this way, little by little we are being purified in the association of the devotees. The devotees are an essential source of that spiritual nourishment. The Antya lila of the Caitanya Caritamrta begins with the verse,

durgame pathi me 'ndhasya
skhalat-pada-gater muhuh
sva-krpa-yasti-danena
santah santv avalambanam

 (Cc. Antya. 1.2)

 The vaisnavas generosity

In that verse it is described, durgame pathi me 'ndhasya, "My path is very slippery. It is difficult to stay on this path but by the stick of the mercy of the vaisnavas as my support, I can remain on this path." So that verse has for me been something that has stayed with me for many years because it is a fact that without the devotees what can we do? It is not possible to stay enlivened. And then there are so many wonderful devotees and the devotees particularly have the quality of generosity and that is the one thing that is the most amazing thing about Krsna consciousness.

Just like Srila Prabhupada introduced the, "Sunday Love Feast," as he called it and there were 15 fabulous preparations- all for free and as much that you can desire! That was just inconceivable! That sort of conquered, that sort of brought out, 'wow, I want to reciprocate, I want to do something in exchange.' So in this way, the vaisnavas by their generosity, conquer. In the beginning we may not be so conscious of our dependence on the vaisnavas. We may think, 'I've got Srimad Bhagavatam, I've got the holy name, now I know everything, what more do I need! I'll just go forward with big steps, fast…' but with time we realise more and more that we need the mercy.

So first of all, I have been graced by many vaisnavas by their great generosity…I always tell how after sannyasa I came into Abhentheuer and Sacinandana Maharaja called me his vairagi bhai, his brother in renunciation. Well I took it as, 'he wants to be my friend, he accepts me as his friend,' so I took it like that and it meant something to me. And up to the day of today I consider Maharaja my dear friend! I'm glad that he's here today! That kind of mercy sustains us for years. A small thing but within it, a gesture of friendship and without friendship how can we stay on this path? It's a long path, a long time, a long way before we can actually go back to Godhead. It's not just easy, it's not just, 'well, you know, now I know everything, I read the Gita and understood the philosophy and now I'll just do it….' No , it takes a lot and we need spiritual nourishment and we need, again and again to take care of being enlivened. Thus we are always eager to be in the association of the vaisnava, especially of the advanced vaisnavas.

The vaisnavas showered me with lots of mercy; in 1994 I had the good fortune to be in Vrndavana for the installation of Srila Prabhupada's murti in his Samadhi. There was a abhisheka and whoever had arranged it all, they had made a miscalculation. There was supposed to be a drum under the table but the drum didn't fit and thus there was a problem in catching the abhisheka. So I volunteered, last minute, to go under there with a team with buckets…boy, I got the mercy- I got the full abhisheka! The honey…I still remember the honey! And the ghee and everything! And I got kicked by all the vaisnavas. Even Brahmananda stood on my hand and Narayana Maharaja kicked me and everyone there kicked me! In this way I was greatly fortunate, it was a great blessing. So I could list many, many blessings that I received over the years from the vaisnavas but then this class would go very, very long. So I'm just sketching now a few quick examples.

Of course, I must say, that the person who blessed me the most is my spiritual master because his generosity blew my mind! It literally blew my mind because he made me do things that I could have never imagined I would be doing all along. As soon as I showed a slight interest in sannyasa, the whole movement told me, 'forget it! Just forget it!' and everyone said…like, Sridhara Maharaja said, "Just stay a brahmacari." I said, "a brahmacari? Maharaja, I've been a grhastha for 24 years!  A brahmacari?" But Jayadvaita Maharaja immediately said, "oh, oh that is very wonderful!"  And as I sort of carefully indicated an inch he started pulling in, "okay, let's go!" And each time like that he showered me with transcendental mercy.

Just now I came from South Africa and my spiritual master was also there and I met him. He was telling a nice story, which I'll share with you. It was a story of the Ramayana. The Ramayana as we all know is an endless saga, there was great battle in Lanka to free Sita from captivity. Meanwhile Sita was kept in Lanka in this Asoka Grove and there were these raksasis who were constantly harassing her, torturing her in so many ways and just trying to convince her to surrender to Ravana. So this was going on. So the battle was over; Ravana killed and defeated, Hanuman was the first to reach the Asoka Grove and to bring the news to Sita. At that time the raksasis were still there, still surrounding her, so Hanuman said, "Ravana is killed! The battle is won! You are free!" and then he saw that she wasn't free but was still surrounded by all these raksasis, so he said, "Shall I kill 'em? I'll just kill 'em all!" and she said, "No Hanuman, no, no don't kill them."

"No but it's just a small thing, I'll just get rid of them. They caused you so much suffering…." and then Sita told Hanuman a story and the story was that once there was a hunter hunting in the forest and then in his hunting activities he came upon a tiger but this tiger was just not a tame tiger and the roles reversed. Instead of the hunter chasing the tiger, the tiger chased the hunter and the hunter was running and running and running! And then there was a tree and he climbed in the tree and as he was up on the branches of the tree, there was a bear! And he looked up, saw the bear, looked down and saw the tiger…and then the tiger said to the bear, "My dear bear, this hunter is our mutual enemy. Kick him down and I will finish him off!"

"No," the bear said, "how can I do that? How can I kick him down? He's a guest in my home. That I cannot do."

The tiger then turned his strategy and he turned to the hunter and he said to the hunter, "Look at that bear, just kick him down and I will eat him instead of you."

And the hunter did it, the hunter suddenly kicked the bear and the bear fell down but on the way the bear somehow or other managed to grab a branch and hang in there and climbing back up and the bear was saved. Then the bear was back up in the branches and the tiger said to the bear, "just see, just see what kind of person this hunter is, you know what I mean? He betrayed you! While you were giving him shelter, he just betrayed you completely! Kick him down now, before he kills you! You can't trust him, as soon as you turn your back on him. Kick him down!"

"No," the bear said, "I cannot do that because even if my guest is misbehaving and behaving in a way that is totally inappropriate, that doesn't give me a license to also act inappropriate. I still have to act properly. So he's my guest, so no, I can't kick him down." And in this way the tiger went hungry that day…!

So our noble bear is a wonderful person. My spiritual master, who is so much dedicated to being a man of noble character, that is his outstanding quality. If I see whatever mercy has been bestowed on me, which is so much generosity, then the thing that penetrates the deepest in my heart is his noble character. That is the one thing that each time I'm thinking…I'm just a low minded person who is just trying to somehow or other become a vaisnava but then I see a man of truly saintly character. Like my spiritual master is known for his thunderbolt, karate blows and he has a tongue, which is as powerful as a lightning bolt and a very sharp intelligence. And he can with one or two words just go to the essence of something and just expose everything. Therefore people are afraid wherever he goes and people are in fear. So when I approached him for initiation, well I was also thinking about the brace position, as they speak about in planes…in case if it gets too rocky then brace yourself. So I was sort of getting ready for anything! I thought that even if thunderbolts come, I'll take them, that was my mood. But I got a few thunderbolts over the years but not too many. Mostly, he melted me with his noble character and he did it again with his bear story which was such a nice story and I somehow or other missed that story in the Ramayana. It is very nice because I thought, here is spiritual nourishment. All of us have to become vaisnavas of noble character. It's not just what we do but it is really who we are. We have to become very noble persons and that is one point that I wanted to make today.

Then another vaisnava who always showers me with mercy- somehow or other he has adopted me- is Indradyumna Maharaja. I don't know why but a few years ago on my birthday- it was a passport birthday so I was hiding it- and he burst in to the Bhagavatam lecture I gave, with a big cake, together with Govinda Maharaja and Puri Maharaja. And they were three big guys! They glorified me and pinned me down and tried to put a piece of cake in my mouth and well, there wasn't much I could do about it. So I kind of surrendered! And then, they stole it out of my mouth and then they danced around with it like intoxicated mad men, which is pretty bad, right. But then Indradyumna Maharaja glorified me for all kinds of things about African preaching, which I really didn't do. But with that they kind of forced me to do it because now my public reputation was that I had done all these things and being proud as I am I didn't want to lose faze, so he forced me to do something! And this year he did it again! I had a hidden little birthday party with the South African devotees in a private house, and suddenly he appears with 20 garlands, and he says, "I've strung them myself, I've been up all night." And then he offers the garlands and everything and then he starts this whole thing, he says, "Kadamba Kanana Maharaja is just like me, we are so close, we are almost the same! I'll tell you the secret, we are twin brothers!" And he kept this up the whole festival and he told everyone that we were twins! Non- stop! Not just once but like 25 times in every public thing, "we are twins, we are twins…" He started also this thing about how in Bhagavatam it is mentioned that the twin that appears first is actually the one that was conceived last. So the one that takes birth first is the youngest because the one that is deepest in the womb is conceived first and then the one that is sort of on the exterior side of the womb is the second one and he comes out first. So he said, "I appeared first and therefore I'm the youngest…" and this whole thing! And again he glorified me for all kind of preaching that I didn't do. So I told everyone the story about stealing the cake and what happened the first time and I said, and now he's doing it again! He's again giving me my orders and now I have to simply do it. And it's not just that I'm saying this, he's sort of keeping the pressure on and is making sure that I'm doing this African preaching.

So in this way the vaisnavas shower me with mercy and I said that day when Maharaja was in the room at the Vyasa Puja, I said, I'm trying to become a generous person but it's very difficult to become generous because by nature I'm quite a miserly Dutchman, who calculates and sort of, 'well I'll give you so much…' and over the years I'm trying to go beyond calculating, I'm trying to just give and not think, can I afford it? So more and more I'm trying to get into this mood. But then Indradyumna Maharaja…in South Africa, in the temples, they have workers who are walking around- the men in blue labour uniforms and the ladies in kitchen uniforms, aprons and so on- and Maharaja was giving initiations and suddenly one of the workers, five minutes before the yajna it was announced that he was also part of the whole thing! And Maharaja just initiated him and called him Radhe Syama and it was all ecstatic and then he got fired up. So later during the festival, he took all the kitchen helpers, all the ladies- big, fat African mammas- he took them all to the gift emporium and he picked out saris and bangles etc, and smiled at the cashier and said, "I started this Ratha Yatra," and didn't pay (laughter) and then he took them all, decked out in bangles and saris, on the stage and made them dance and then he took them to the restaurant and gave them a big, big feast and he didn't pay again! But he showed what generosity is like and I'm like millions of miles behind.

So in this way just by the association of these vaisnavas we are seeing what we have to become, transcendental personalities. Not material misers who are always thinking, 'what can I do? How much service can I afford? How much credit can I give someone? Well, I appreciate at least one quality in this devotee…' No, appreciate them completely in generosity. So generosity doesn't mean just money, it means appreciation, it means giving. And this is what we are all about. This is a movement where we have to learn how to give instead of worrying about what we're getting. And that takes a long time. We are so much concerned about, 'what am I getting? Oh and what am I needing? I need mercy, I need inspiration, I'm struggling, please…it's so difficult, give me a secret, give me something, give me a mantra, give me some solution…please, so that I can stop struggling…' okay, we're giving it now…the solution is to start giving, that is the secret. Don't worry about what you're getting, start giving and then everything will follow from there. And then the more you give, the more the other vaisnavas, to your surprise, start to give to you also. It's just amazing! And then you get showered just like Mrgrari, the hunter. Narada said, "cut the string of your bow!" that was the crucial moment, 'cut the string of your bow,' "but how will I eat?"

"I will provide!" And we see how Narada provided; the vaisnavas could see that this hunter has transformed, he's dedicating himself to Krsna fearlessly. He's not depending on any material arrangements, he's just depending on Krsna, then we'll give.

Purity is our security

Recently there was a brahmacari who wanted some maintenance for his service because he said, "who will take care of me? What is my security?" and I was thinking about that and the next morning during my japa, I thought, our security is our purity. That is our security, that is what we have. If the purity is there then don't worry, then we'll be taken care of. Devotees will take care of anyone. We don't need to worry. Now is the era where people are afraid. The other day I spoke to a young grhastha who was getting ready for a professional career in the world. And I said, it's not the only way. Actually there is another way and it's very simple, you just go to some city and you rent a house and you open a preaching centre. And you just preach and you live from preaching, it's very simple. You don't have to work, why do you want to work? Just preach and people will give and you just live simple in the temple and everything will be fine. Why do you want a profession? It's not necessary, just preach. He said, "my faith is not strong enough, that Krsna will provide." That is the crux of the matter.

So it is a time where somehow or other we have lost faith, collectively actually, because this spirit has died and it works I guarantee you. The only thing that is needed is purity. If one is a householder and goes out to preach then one has to be renounced. One cannot live it up at public expense; one has to be ready to make a sacrifice and to live simple and to preach. If we do then everything will come and then one can make advancement so quickly. So it's an option, I'm only offering an option for those who are interested. It's not like, 'okay, all of us give up your jobs tomorrow and that's it! From now on it's only preaching centres…' I won't be so demanding but there is so much to do, so much to do all over the world. There is no lack of opportunities and Krsna will provide undoubtedly and purity is the force.

So with these kind of meditations, I wanted to make a few points which are relating to the main theme of the lecture, which is 'spiritual nourishment.' I've mentioned sadhu-sanga, then there is sadhana- there is absorption in chanting and in hearing Srimad Bhagavatam. If we have not read Srimad Bhagavatam…there are many devotees in our movement who have not yet read Srimad Bhagavatam and that means that you have given up the fight, that feels that you have not fulfilled your duty, that means that you are below the minimum. Sometimes they speak on 'below the poverty level,' it's like not even minimum! Without the Bhagavatam, you cannot live! Without the Bhagavatam, you are dead! Without the Bhagavatam, you are a ghost! It's like that because the Bhagavatam is the very foundation of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu's movement. We see that the evidence that Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu presents, the principle evidence is all Srimad Bhagavatam, all in His preaching. And we see that the whole lifestyle that Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu was teaching is founded on Srimad Bhagavatam. Without Srimad Bhagavatam one cannot live, it is like that. One is dead without it.

So I want to quickly put in a few pointers because time is limited. So my conclusion is that let us be conscious of the need for spiritual nourishment, that we ourselves are in need of spiritual nourishment. Let us not think that we can go on automatic pilot in spiritual life but let us make a conscious effort to be well nourished and let us nourish others by becoming vaisnavas of noble character. Then I guarantee you that the path back to Godhead will be successful and it will be successful without a doubt. Because of time constraint, I'll pick up the thread later in the day, expand and go more in depth on other points. Now maybe one of you have a question or a comment? I'll shortly answer it and then we'll take a break.

Yes? (Asks devotee to translate)

Question: How hard must we try to develop our desire to go to Krsna?

Maharaja: We must try with all our heart, we must try with every cell in our body, we must try with every thought that comes into our mind…we must try completely! That's what we should do. Of course we don't do that and then comes the next part and that's the part where we realise, 'I know what I should be doing and I'm falling short. I'm very much falling short. And that's where we start to pray for mercy and that's why I always stress Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu because I'm so much aware of how much I'm falling short. Of course Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu was deeply absorbed in meditation on Radha and Krsna. So I am also thinking about the amazing nature of Vrndavana. I consider Vrndavana my home but then in that home, I am just a poor, miserly beggar. That's the problem. And I see the residents of Vrndavana passing by and sometimes a few drops of mercy comes my way but then I can't really keep up with them at all. Then I know that it's time for mercy. So then I pray to Lord Caitanya and Lord Nityananda for mercy and then I pray to all the followers of Sri Sri Gaura Nitai, to Srila Prabhupada and to all of you. I wrote something on this and then I said, basically as a beggar, I want Krsna prema, oh yes I really want it, but I don't want to pay the price for it. Oh no I don't. And I offer Krsna only broken names, that's all and I stand there saying, 'please give me Krsna prema, please.' And meanwhile I am offering broken names…that is my condition.

So you must try to give everything, not a little, but everything, everything, everything to Krsna. Thank you for your nice question.

Ok, yes? She came all the way from Africa and that's far!

Question: (Inaudible)

Maharaja: She's asking, I was living in Vrndavana and I got a lot of association of many leaders of our movement and why Jayadvaita Swami? Okay, because the first time I met him he was standing at the maha prasad table in Vrndavana and he had a huge stack of these leaf cups of maha prasadam, as they have in India, and I walked past and I said, "Oh, hungry Maharaja?" which is a little bit challenging isn't it? So I got it straight away, he said, "oh, okay, you can carry it." And there I walked with the snacks and he just took me over! He just made me serve and then he laid down to rest on the bed and he said I had to read the Krsna book. So I was reading the Krsna book and after ten minutes there is this kind of sound, (makes sleeping sound), so I sort of quietly stopped and was about to slip out and then, with his eyes still closed, he says, "Don't stop reading!" So I kept on reading and after about another 10 minutes, again (makes sleeping sound)! And this went on for one and a half hours! I was reading Krsna book for one and a half hour and each time I stopped he woke up and told me to keep on reading. So that's where it began and he always treated me as if he was completely in charge of me. He never treated me in any other way although we were friends and although I had said that I would never accept him as an authority or anything, but throughout the years that was just what he did. So finally I surrendered! What could I do! That's what happened!

All right, thank you very much. Let's take a little break and we'll meet in about an hour.

Srila Prabhupada ki, Jaya!

Elements&their properties!

Earthly objects can b felt by all d elements such as
touch, taste, smell, sound, sight, form.Water has no form.Fire has no
....(some 1 help!) Air has no sight.Ether/space is even more
difficult2understand.1easy way2understand is it's d space dat all
other lower gross elements occupy. All dat v eat&our own body is
predominantly made of earth&water.Even tho there are variety of
bodies&forms,d basic elements are all d same&hence pride in having a
beautiful form is meaningless.Becoz d elements are of inferior
nature&temporary.

Srila Prabhupada’s Vyasa Puja

Dear Srila Prabhupada,

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to you!

A god-brother shared with me a personal realization, fully aware of the irony: "After studying the sastra deeply for over forty years, I have come to the realization that the essence of spiritual life is to fully surrender to the spiritual master." I chuckled. It seemed like my life as a devotee. How do we miss the simple points you stressed again and again? But it also strongly highlighted one of my strongest appreciations over the last few years of you as a spiritual teacher:

You are expert at stressing and teaching those points that are most essential.

It also brought to my mind the things you emphasized that I am just beginning to realize after my own forty years of study:

Closeness or distance from you is not a matter of personal association or even what generation we are. It is simply our humility and mood of service that reveals who you are.

The foundational moods of devotion like humility, gratitude, and fixedness in guru are the mood and shape of love of Godhead that we can most readily access and express now.

Without being fully dependent on the mercy of Sri Guru there is no hope to advance in spiritual life.

My studies have also have reaffirmed your expertise as a teacher:

Although advanced in studies, you can explain even the deepest concepts to those who are not.

You're an authority in the subject you teach – never off the mark.

In the second verse of the Bhagavatam, we are told that one who hears the Bhagavatam just once arrests Krishna in his heart! I ask, "Why doesn't that ever happen to me? I've heard the text hundreds of times." I know the answer. I haven't accepted its simple message – that Krishna is the most worthy object of devotion and my duty is simply to surrender to and serve Him. By hearing it again and again from you, however, I am getting closer to the goal.

What greater treasure than to have the lotus feet of Krishna in one's heart, by your grace? Thank you. Thank you.

Your unworthy disciple,
Dhanurdhara Swami

We all feel a great need, we are in desperate need to somehow or other to find such
nourishment… let us be conscious of the need for spiritual nourishment, that we
ourselves are in need of spiritual nourishment. Let us not think that we can go on
automatic pilot in spiritual life but let us make a conscious effort to be well
nourished and let us nourish others by becoming vaisnavas of noble character.
Then I guarantee you that the path back to Godhead will be successful and it will be
successful without a doubt!
