Manifestation of the Material World

Manifestation of the Material World

(by Sri Atmatattva Das)

Material CreationThe material creation in its very first stage is called pradhana – the eternal, subtle, undifferentiated sum total of all material elements, the unmanifested eternal combination of the three modes of material nature.

Pradhana is sometimes also related to as saguna-Brahman, since it is basically Brahman but with the presence of the three modes of material nature. Nevertheless, these modes do not yet clearly manifest causes and effects (SB 3.26.10).

The pradhana contains the following 24 elements in a dormant state:

- 5 subtle elements (sound, touch, form-color, taste) – 5 gross elements (ether, air, fire, water, earth) – 5 knowledge aquiring senses (ears, skin, eyes, tongue, nose) – 5 working senses (tongue-mouth, hands, legs, genital, anus) – 4 internal, subtle senses (mind, intelligence, ego, contaminated consciousness)

Time is considered to be the 25th element; it is the mixing and agitating element. The Supreme Personality of Godhead can be perceived as time (SB 3.26.11-18).

The pradhana or saguna-Brahman becomes then agitated by the time factor which represents the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Thus and by the influence of the three modes of material nature the creation comes to the level of mahat-tattva, or prakrti, where the elements actually can manifest themselves. The mahat-tattva is the breeding source of all varieties and brings forth all the different material bodies and material objects; it contains all the universes and is the root of all cosmic manifestations. The mahat-tattva is annihilated at the time of the annihilation, the end of Brahma's life.

Next the Supreme Personality of Godhead impregnates the mahat-tattva with His internal potency which are the living entities. Agitated by the destinations of the contitioned souls the material nature, or mahat-tattva, delivers the cosmic intelligence (Hiranyamaya). The mahat-tattva is thus "lit up" by the sum total of the consciousness of all the conditioned souls (SB 3.26.19-20).

The Caturvyuha expansions of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, namely Sri Vasudeva, Sri Aniruddha, Sri Pradyumna and Sri Sankarshana occur and take charge of various aspects of the material creation.

In the beginning pure goodness, the vasudeva stage of consciousness, prevails within the mahat-tattva. This point of creation is controlled by Sri Vasudeva, the Superknower. Due to the pure goodness the consciousness has the qualities of complete serenity, clarity and freedom from any distraction; one is free from the infringement by material desires. Therefore one can see a reflection of the Supreme Personality of Godhead and if one worships Sri Vasudeva one can come to the platform of pure goodness (suddha-sattva), thus understanding the Supreme Personality of Godhead (SB 3.26.21).

Through the desire to enjoy and control seperately from Krishna, the misuse of independence by the living entities which are impregnated into the material nature, material ego or false ego is caused to spring up from the mahat-tattva in pure goodness. This false ego is endowed with active power of three kind – good (serene), passionate (active), ignorant (dull). From the false ego in different modes of material nature mind, senses, elements as well as all the other ingredients and objects of the material nature are produced. Therefore every object within the material creation is seen as identical with false ego since it has the false ego as its source. Sri Sankarshana controls that false ego and in order to become free from it one is adviced to worship Sri Sankarsana. He is worshipped through Lord Siva; the snakes which cover the body of Lord Shiva are representations of Sri Sankarsna, and Lord Shiva is always absorbed in meditation upon Sri Sankarshana (SB 3.26.23-24).

From the false ego in goodness come the controlling demigods as well as the mind. The mind has the quality of not being fixed; due to different kind of desires for sense gratification the mind rejects something as bad and accepts something else as good. The false ego in goodness is controlled by Sri Aniruddha. If one wants to get free from mental disturbances, one has to worship Sri Aniruddha. For this purpose, worship of the moon planet is also recommended in the Vedic literature (SB 3.26.26-27).

From the false ego in passion intelligence, living energy (prana), the five knowledge aquiring sense and the five working senses are created. Intelligence has five qualities: doubt, misapprehension, correct apprehension, memory and sleep. The function of intelligence is to ascertain the nature of an object and thus help the senses to make choices. The intelligence is supposed to control or guide the senses. By intelligence one can understand how things are and if intelligence is properly applied one's consciousness becomes expanded. This begins with doubt, the first quality of intelligence. One doubts whether ones existence is spiritual or material. Doubt is a very important factor in developping intelligence, eventhough doubting is improper after receiving information from an authoritative source. Through proper analysis one then finds that things are different from what they seemed to be so far; thus misapprehension, the second quality of intelligence, is detected. Next, after eliminating the wrong understanding one can come to the proper conclusion; this is called correct apprehension, the third quality of intelligence. In this way by intelligence one can understands that one is not the body and one's consciousness becomes expanded; expansion of consciousness culminates in pure Krishna-consciousness. Beyond the intelligence's three qualities of doubt, misapprehension and correct apprehension there are also the qualities of memory and sleep. In order to keep the intelligence working properly one must sleep. For being fixed in one's intelligence one has to worship Sri Pradyumna, who is reached through the worship of Lord Brahma.

Directly related to intelligence in their function are the knowledge acquiring senses which are: Ears, skin, eyes, nose and the tongue.

With the working senses action are performed; there are five working senses as well: Tongue (mouth, speaking), hands, legs, genitals and the anus.

Both, the knowledge acquiring senses and the working senses are depending on the living energy (vital energy, prana), which is also created from the false ego in the mode of passion. The more a person is influenced by the mode of passion the more he can accomplish and acquire. The Vedic scriptures recommend that if one wants to encourage a person in acquiring material possessions, one should also encourage him in sex life. Thus one can see that those who are addicted to sex life are also materially advanced. Sex life or passionate life is the impetus for the material advancement of civilization (SB 3.26.29).

From the false ego in ignorance the five subtle and gross elements, from whom all (perceivable) objects within the material world are made, become manifested; it is presided over by Sri Sankarsana. Therefore persons who are very dull and very much absorbed in the gross material world worship Lord Shiva who is connected with Sri Sankarsana, in order to obtain gross material sense objects. When the false ego in ignorance is agitated by the sex energy of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, first the subtle element sound is manifested. The original and very first sound within the creation is the omkara, "OM", being the sound representation of the Supreme Personality's Brahman aspect. From sound comes the gross element ether as well as the sense of hearing. Sound has the quality of conveying the idea of an object; therefore it is considered to be the subtle form of an object. Further sound indicates the presence of a speaker, eventually screened form our view, and it also constitutes the subtle form of ether (SB 3.26.32-33).

Ether has the qualities of accommodating the room for external and internal existences of all living entities, the field of activity of the vital air, the senses and the mind.

Ether means room or space, and it evolves from sound vibration. Thus form the original sound vibration "om" the room was created within which the manifestation of the gross elements like air, fire, water and earth (the universe) can take place. In general the ether or sky gives accommodation to the room which the various material bodies of the living entities need for their external and internal existence. The internal existence of a living entity in the material world comprises of vital air (prana), senses and the mind. These ingredients require for their functioning subtle forms which are invisible and rest within ether. In this way ehter accommodates the internal existence of the living entities within the material world. With external existence everything is meant that stands in relation with material objects which are external to the material body. By means of sound vibration, talking about a particular object, the subtle form of that object, which sound carries, is created within the mind. These subtle and invisible forms of material objects are given a room within the ether and this is called the external activity of ether. That within ether subtle, invisible forms of material sense objects can exist has been proven by modern science by transmission of television where forms as pictures are transmitted from one place to another by wireless means (SB 3.26.34). Thus it is seen that mental activities or psychological action in terms of thinking, feeling and willing are activities on the ethereal platform. This is very important in relation to the moment of death. On the basis of its reflections (which are influenced by sound vibrations) the mind generates desires for obtaining various sense objects. In fact these desires are unlimited and they all create subtle forms within ether. An of course, they all result in various bodies in order to enjoy these desired situations (desiring a sense object indirectly means desiring all the tools to enjoy it) which are accommodated in their subtle form within ether as well. In this way one can, and in fact by every minute's desires one actually does create an unlimited number of bodies within the ether, all well equipped to become manifested on the gross level. At the moment when one particular body perishes the opportunity for one of all the subtle forms kept within ether arises to become manifested on the gross plane. This happens according to the level of contamination or desire which was most prominent within the mind at the moment of death. All this is described by Sri Krishna in the Bhagavad-gita (8.5-8).

From the above it becomes clear that the evolution of various material elements is not something that takes place only once, at the moment of creation. The description of the primary creation is rather a general scheme by which matter is manifested in general, at the moment when creation starts as well as at any stage of the existence of the material manifestation. The difference is, however, that at the beginning of creation the sum total of each element was taken from a dormant state, the pradhana, and made available by the direction of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, whereas later, when the living entities "create" while pursuing various desires they simply receive supplies from that sum total of the material elements.

From ethereal existence, under the influence of time, the subtle element touch and thence air and the sense of touch become manifested.

After creating subtle forms in the mind which are accommodated in the ether, time separates us from the manifestation of gross forms which we can touch. By the influence of the mode of passion, which is related to air (movement), we endeavor to manifest the form on the gross level. Our sense of proprietorship over action (passion) is due to the activity of air within the material body. Consequently, we will "get in touch" with the gross form of what now is a wishful thought in the mind in due course of time.

3 Gates to Hell

There are three gates leading to this hell "lust, anger and greed". Every sane man should give these up, for they lead to the degradation of the soul. (Bhagavad-Gita. 16.21)

Hearing is the highest of all kinds of sense perceptions

Bhaktivedanta VedaBaseŚrīmad Bhāgavatam 3.29.29

tatrāpi sparśa-vedibhyaḥ

pravarā rasa-vedinaḥ

tebhyo gandha-vidaḥ śreṣṭhās

tataḥ śabda-vido varāh

TRANSLATION

Among the living entities who have developed sense perception, those who have developed the sense of taste are better than those who have developed only the sense of touch. Better than them are those who have developed the sense of smell, and better still are those who have developed the sense of hearing.

PURPORT

Although Westerners accept that Darwin first expounded the doctrine of evolution, the science of anthropology is not new. The development of the evolutionary process was known long before from the Bhāgavatam, which was written five thousand years ago. There are records of the statements of Kapila Muni, who was present almost in the beginning of the creation. This knowledge has existed since the Vedic time, and all these sequences are disclosed in Vedic literature; the theory of gradual evolution or anthropology is not new to the Vedas.

It is said here that amongst the trees there are also evolutionary processes; the different kinds of trees have touch perception. It is said that better than the trees are the fish because fish have developed the sense of taste. Better than the fish are the bees, who have developed the sense of smell, and better than them are the serpents because serpents have developed the sense of hearing. In the darkness of night a snake can find its eatables simply by hearing the frog's very pleasant cry. The snake can understand, "There is the frog," and he captures the frog simply because of its sound vibration. This example is sometimes given for persons who vibrate sounds simply for death. One may have a very nice tongue that can vibrate sound like the frogs, but that kind of vibration is simply calling death. The best use of the tongue and of sound vibration is to chant Hare KṛṣṇaHare KṛṣṇaKṛṣṇa KṛṣṇaHare HareHare RāmaHare RāmaRāma Rāma,Hare Hare. That will protect one from the hands of cruel death.

Association of a good wife is necessary in a life of karma and political affairs

In the varnasrama-dharma system, certain classes, such as the brähmanas and sannyäsis, do not need encouragement from the opposite sex. Ksatriyas and grhasthas, however, actually need the encouragement of their wives in order to execute their duties. Indeed, a grhastha or ksatriya cannot properly execute his responsibilities without the association of his wife. Sri Caitanya Mahäprabhu personally admitted that a grhastha must live with a wife. Ksatriyas were even allowed to have many wives to encourage them in discharging the duties of government. The association of a good wife is necessary in a life of karma and political affairs. To execute his duties properly, therefore. Mahäräja Priyavrata took advantage of his good wife Barhismaté, who was always very expert in pleasing her great husband in various ways-SB#5.1.29

What kind of devotees are they Krishna?

Arjuna: What kind of devotees are they? Giving You the burden of carrying their necessities?

Krishna: It's not a burden for Me. Just like a young man takes pleasure in carrying his beloved lady over his shoulders, I take pleasure in taking care of My devotees necessities even though they don't expect me to do so, because My devotees are very dear to Me.

The senses - venomous serpents

The senses are like venomous serpents which are always troublesome for the conditioned souls causing the degradation of the soul. But when the poison in the teeth of snake is removed by the process of devotional service, the bites of snake like senses cannot do much harm to the soul.

An active fool is very dangerous than a lazy fool. Because when the fool is active, he is likely to cause more disasters than if he would remain lazy and inactive. A well known active fool is a monkey and also monkey like men without tail.

The only shelter!

When Krishna becomes very kind with someone, He removes everyone and everything from that person and makes His very self as the only shelter. When Srila Prabhupada lost his family and his job, assets he would remember this always and one time he realized that only a list of names of parents, family, friends would remain at some point of time in our life.

Chewing the chewed won't bring happiness anymore

By chewing the chewed we should get bored, otherwise we aren't learning our lessons. The process of eating, sleeping, mating and defending is the same that we performed for millions of lifetimes in the past. Still we are thinking its new and wondering if we could extract some pleasure from that.

Mercy in an accessible form

Krishna's mercy is like ocean. Since the ocean water is salty we cannot directly consume or make use of it. But if the ocean water is evaporated to the sky as clouds and pours as rain, it is suitable for consumption and life. It is the spiritual master who transforms the mercy of Krishna in such a way that we can access within our limited boundaries of conditioned life.

Feelings of Guilt

Feelings of Guilt
`````````````````
801) When we come to spiritual life and understand that we have many bad habits due to being conditioning in the material world for long time, we try to over come the habits by knowledge of shastras, hearing lectures from devotees, by performing service to Vaishnavas and the Lord etc. Some habits are easy to give up, some take little endeavor to overcome and some habits are really very hard to give up. We try our best to overcome these anarthas, but these deeply rooted anarthas seem impossible to overcome. For some time it seems that we have overcome the habits, but after some time they come back to haunt us again and become stumbling block on path of devotion. How do we deal with these kind of Bad Habits or anarthas?
Answer:
There is a difference between healthy remorse and guilt. In reestablishing our relationship with Krsna, there's place for recognizing and repenting the fundamentally unloving choice of action in forgetfulness of Him. Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura describes the fire of that kind of regret as purifying.
It serves as impetus to again choose love and remembrance, acting in relationship with Krsna.
On the other hand, regret that takes on the flavor of guilt, seasoned with despondency and dejection, is toxic. Such lamentation is characteristic of the mode of ignorance, tamo-guna. It is another way of forgetting Krsna and one's own eternal spiritual nature as part-and-parcel in relationship with Him. It places oneself (the false conception of self, that is) at the center of one's consciousness - "How shameful I am!" - and ensnares such a lamenter in a downward spiral that distracts and detracts energy from positive engagement of all thoughts and energy in devotional service to Krsna instead.
The toxicity of guilt and lamentation can be counteracted and transformed into the nourishment of bhakti by knowledge of sambandha-jnana (i.e.
'knowledge of our relationship with our Source'), for starters. The soul is part of Krsna - never separated from Him, expanded from His energy, of His quality, always pure. The soul is not 'the doer' of any action, nor touched by fruitive action, karma. In fact, by nature, by constitutional design, the tiny jiva soul is technically called tatastha-sakti, marginal energy - that is, inherent within the soul is the dual options of a propensity to be influenced by the spiritual energy as well as a propensity to be influenced by the material energy.
The material energy's influence upon the soul is call "covering potency".
So as soon as you become aware of having come under the influence of the material energy, having become covered and forgetful of Krsna, and thus having made undesirable choices contrary to relationship with Him, you can choose in that very moment to again align yourself with the spiritual energy in devotional service. There is no need to linger there in lamentation; it is enough to simply take note and move on.
While doing so, you can also remember the nature of Krsna, who is kind, compassionate, loving, forgiving... He has witnessed all of our activities, including the most abominable ones, with our backs turned towards Him, throughout innumerable lifetimes -- and He still chooses to accompany us without interruption in our hearts as Paramatma! *AND* He grants us unlimited chances to come back to Him, including welcoming us to the path of bhakti in this very lifetime. How gloriously forgiving is He! That quality in Him alone is so lovable, so inviting of our reciprocation!
Let that enthuse you to be more determined to serve Him in pure devotional consciousness!
I am ok but you are not ok!
The knowledge of an individual soul or Jivatma is imperfect because he is conscious of only himself(his body-both subtle and gross). Only the Supersoul is conscious of all beings as He is antaryami. With this limited knowledge we can't judge other devotees of their level of progress. Some devotees think that whatever they do, only is devotional service and what others do as inferior and not transcendental. This is lack of knowledge. Whatever mistakes they do are to be forgiven but not others'. There are other devotees who criticize genuinely for the upliftment of the soul, for them Krsna gives the knowledge(specific to the person being preached) from within because He knows everyone personally.
[srilaprabhupadanectar] Remembering Srila Prabhupada - Preaching to Shaivites
Preaching to Shaivites
July 4, 1973
He criticized Western civilization for ruination of human living. They are thinking there is no time for self-realization. Not only must they work eight hours a day, but they try to save time for spending at naked dancing, vacations, intoxication. Our movement is fighting this. It is not religious sentiment, but trying to save humanity from ruin.
Regarding Midwest zone, he said that since centers are established there, then go into interior come and go, come and go, some go south, some go north, in this way (cover all the towns and villages). If we make some devotees, we can open centers. Centers should not be opened whimsically, opened one day and closed the next.
I can go with my party and encourage the centers also to send parties, not just to do hard-core book distribution. Give them direction but preach, meet people, hold feasts in cities go to the interior, chanting in Kansas City, Topeka, Minneapolis, etc.
Riding home in a taxi from the pandal, question asked by Jayapataka Swami: If we gain political power, will we follow Manu-samhita?
First gain power, he said. Then yes, Manu-samhita. Actually everything is in the Gita and Bhagavatam in gist. Manu-samhita is based on varnasrama and that is in the Gita, I created the four orders. First we would divide society into orders by quality and work, not birth. Someone made a brahmana would have to act like a brahmana or else he would be punished.
Being asked, he told Pancadravida Swami how to preach to smartas in South India who may know Sanskrit:
Learn five slokas a month; in six months you'll know thirty slokas. That should be enough to present Bhagavad-gita. PDS said Hrsikesananda was going to help him with pronunciation. Prabhupada said, this-ananda, that-ananda, be your own person. Do not be dependent on someone else to learn your work for you. When asked how to preach to Shaivites, he said, Ask them, 'My dear sir, do you accept Bhagavad-gita?' They will all say yes. Then quote: 'Those whose intelligence is maddened worship the demigods.' Come to understand Bhagavad-gita well, even in English, and you can preach.
About me and getting through international airlines, customs entanglement, He is doing his best, but he does not have experience. If every month a new man, then I have to suffer. TKG said, But we suffer when you get angry upon us. He said, But your suffering is secondary. He was detained three hours in Paris and practically jailed four days from Africa to Australia. I am coming and going so much. I am a little bit known. I should not have to wait on lines. That is the job of the secretary. He should be so expert that these rascals with all their rules are answered and I am not detained as an ordinary person.
I would say, It is all right. I have checked everything. He would reply, You say that, but then I will be stopped at the airport. If everything is not cleared, he is detained.
You have to have a brain, always alert. One who has a brain has strength.
If you become conscious of Me, you will pass over all the obstacles of conditioned life by My grace
Bhagavad Gita Chapter 18 Text 58
"If you become conscious of Me, you will pass over all the obstacles of conditioned life by My grace. If, however, you do not work in such consciousness but act through false ego, not hearing Me, you will be lost."
What kind of devotees are they?
Krishna: I supply all necessities for My devotees.
Arjuna: what kind of devotees are they, Krishna? They are expecting you to get their necessities fulfilled
Krishna: They don't ask Me but out of love I Myself personally take care of them and supply all they need. I maintain universes, this is not a big deal for Me.
Double functions that are mandatory for Conditioned souls
A conditioned soul has to act for double functions—namely for the maintenance of the body and again for self-realization. Social status, mental development, cleanliness, austerity, nourishment and the struggle for existence are all for the maintenance of the body. The self-realization part of one's activities is executed in one's occupation as a devotee of the Lord, and one performs actions in that connection also. One must perform these two different functions along parallel lines, because a conditioned soul cannot give up the maintenance of his body. The proportion of activities for maintenance of the body decreases, however, in proportion to the increase in devotional service.
As long as the proportion of devotional service does not come to the right point, there is a chance for an occasional exhibition of worldliness.
But it should be noted that such worldliness cannot continue for long because, by the grace of the Lord, such imperfections will come to an end very shortly. Therefore the path of devotional service is the only right path. If one is on the right path, even an occasional occurrence of worldliness does not hamper one in the advancement of self-realization."
Miseries infer and remind our incompatibility with matter
The miseries of this material world serve to indirectly remind us of our incompatibility with dead matter. Intelligent living entities generally take note of these reminders and engage themselves in the culture of vidyā, or transcendental knowledge. Human life is the best opportunity for the culture of spiritual knowledge, and a human being who does not take advantage of this opportunity is called a narādhama, the lowest of human beings.-
He is near for the surrendered but far beyond reach for the unsurrendered souls
In the Bhagavad-gītā (4.11) the Lord says that how He treats His devotee depends on the devotee's degree of surrender. The Lord reserves the right not to reveal Himself to anyone and everyone but to show Himself only to those souls who surrender unto Him. Thus for the surrendered soul He is always within reach, whereas for the unsurrendered soul He is far, far away and cannot be approached.
We cant limit God with our Limited Capcity of understanding
Men are accustomed to reaching conclusions according to their capacity for understanding, but the Supreme Lord is not subject to our limited capacity for understanding. It is for this reason that the Upaniṣads warn us that no one can approach the Lord by his own limited potency.- Isopanishad Mantra 4 purport.
[srilaprabhupadanectar] Remembering Srila Prabhupada - A real sannyasi
A real sannyasi
Notes on sannyasa from The Perfection of Yoga, pages 48 50
According to Vedic culture, there are four stages of life. Finally he gives up both wife and children and remains alone to cultivate Krsna consciousness and that stage is called sannyasa, or the renounced order of life. Yet Krsna indicates that for a sannyasi, renunciation is not all. In addition, there must be some duty. What is the duty of a sannyasi, for one who has renounced family life and no longer has material obligations? His duty is a most responsible one: it is to work for Krsna. Moreover, this is the real duty for everyone in all stages of life.
In everyone's life there are two duties: one is to serve the illusion, and the other is to serve the reality. When one serves the reality, he is a real sannyasi. When one serves the illusion, he is deluded by maya.
One who is unattached to the fruits of his work and who works as he is obligated is in the renounced order of life, and he is the true mystic, not he who lights no fire and performs no work.' (Bg. 6.1) Everyone is working and expecting some result. One may ask what is the purpose of working if no result is expected? A remuneration or salary is always demanded by the worker. But here Krsna indicates that one can work out of a sense of duty alone, not expecting the results of his activities. If one works in this way, then he is actually a sannyasi; he is in the renounced order of life.
Everyone serves, therefore better to serve reality. This is the platform of knowledge. By sannyasa, the renounced order of life, we refer to one who has come to this platform. Sannyasa is a question of realization, not social status.
Vasudevah sarvam iti after many births, when one comes to the platform of real knowledge, he 'surrenders unto Me' Why many births? If the ultimate goal of life is to surrender to Krsna, why hesitate? Why not surrender immediately? When one comes to understand that point of surrender, he becomes a real sannyasi. Krsna never forces. surrender is a result of transcendental love.
