Bhakti Yoga-Devotional Service to the Supreme Lord Sri Krishna

Bhakti Yoga-Devotional Service to the Supreme Lord Sri Krishna

Beauty is worse than wine, it intoxicates both the holder and the beholder

This is true but, we are forced to get ugly by the time which devours everyone and everything. We always wanted to be beautiful and attract everyone around. But we are controlled by the material nature which is very stringent in its laws. It's a matter of time as far as this material world is concerned. The living entity fails to see the time factor with which he is carried, just like clouds are carried away by the mighty wind. This temporary beauty of the material existence is only a reflection of the real beauty that exists in the Spiritual World where everyone is as beautiful as the Lord Himself. The Supreme Lord is a person and the name befitting Him is Krishna which means "All Attractive". He is the most beautiful being who attracts all living beings from plants, animals, insects, stones and stone hearted persons in the entire manifestation of both spiritual and material existence. How many years does the beauty queens or actresses can attract the public?

In this world, we don't find loving exchanges between different species of life because the living beings, the souls are covered by their gross material and subtle bodies. But this loving exchange is possible between different species when we all see the reality that we are spirit souls and connect themselves with the real source of existence . And the perfection of loving exchange is possible only with the Supreme Person who is our ultimate refuge.

When Lord Chaithanya went through the forests of Jharkand, even the animals were able to feel the ecstasy by hearing the holy names from the Supreme Lord Sri Krishna Chaithanya Himself. Tiger and Deers were embracing and dancing. Such is the potency of the names of the Lord. It can bring ecstasy to the soul regardless of the physical, mental, intellectual coverings.

As far as beauty of the Supreme Lord Sri Krishna is concerned, there's no one who can surpass Him in beauty. When Krishna personally appeared in this planet 5000 years ago, all the animals and the residents of the Vraja bhumi were attracted to Him. And the Gopis they were cursing Lord Brahma for having created the eyes with momentary blinks. They could not even stop beholding the beauty of Krishna even for a moment when the eye blinks. Such is their Love for Him. And if there's anyone who can get intoxicated by His beauty, that is the perfection of Life!

The Supreme Lord is the most beautiful person and hence the name Krishna!!!

Ganges@home?

One may cleanse himself daily by taking a bath in water, but if one
takes a bath even once in the sacred Ganges water of Bhagavad-gita,
for him the dirt of material life is altogether vanquished.

The Bhakti Plant [BG.10.14]

(Purport to BG 10.9 continued)

The spiritual plant of devotional service gradually grows and grows until it penetrates the covering of the material universe and enters into the brahmajyoti effulgence in the spiritual sky. In the spiritual sky also that plant grows more and more until it reaches the highest planet, which is called Goloka Vrindavana, the supreme planet of Krishna. Ultimately, the plant takes shelter under the lotus feet of Krishna and rests there. Gradually, as a plant grows fruits and flowers, that plant of devotional service also produces fruits, and the watering process in the form of chanting and hearing goes on. This plant of devotional service is fully described in the Caitanya-caritamrita (Madhya-lila, Chapter Nineteen). It is explained there that when the complete plant takes shelter under the lotus feet of the Supreme Lord, one becomes fully absorbed in love of God; then he cannot live even for a moment without being in contact with the Supreme Lord, just as a fish cannot live without water. In such a state, the devotee actually attains the transcendental qualities in contact with the Supreme Lord.

The Srimad-Bhagavatam is also full of such narrations about the relationship between the Supreme Lord and His devotees; therefore the Srimad-Bhagavatam is very dear to the devotees, as stated in the Bhagavatam itself (12.13.18). Srimad-bhagavatam puranam amalam yad vaishnavanam priyam. In this narration there is nothing about material activities, economic development, sense gratification or liberation. Srimad-Bhagavatam is the only narration in which the transcendental nature of the Supreme Lord and His devotees is fully described. Thus the realized souls in Krishna consciousness take continual pleasure in hearing such transcendental literatures, just as a young boy and girl take pleasure in association.

KKSblog.com - Developing Devotional Service Part 3 ( Study == Fail??)

        Posted:
18 Jul 2011 03:43 PM PDT

(Kadamba Kanana Swami, 2005)

Sometimes there are tests and we do not pass them. Yes it means that we did not do our homework! Before the test if you do not do your homework, then you might fail the test, although it's within your capacity to pass it. So in that way we may fail certain tests, but we have the means, and if we carefully take shelter of the process of Krishna Consciousness, then we will not fail the tests, but if we are not careful and inattentive to take shelter properly of the process of devotional service, then we might fail the test and we might feel that so many tests are too much for us!

As soon as we start to take the process of devotional service again(this is a nice thing)that even if you fail in devotional service; even if you fall down from the process; or deviate from the process, then there is no need for any atonement, since all you have to do is immediately take up the process again and immediately you are situated again….properly on the path and there is no loss!

Scarcity of food&so much suffering, without Krishna Consciousness

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
H.G. Sankarsan Nitai prabhu is a disciple of H.H. Jayapataka Swami. He is general manager for Mayapur Chandradoya Mandir. His ability to organize his thoughts and present Krishna Consciousness in a clear, mature and logical manner is always appreciated. We are blessed to hear from such devotees as H.G. Sankarsan Nitai. All glories to H.G. Sankarsan Nitai prabhu.

Śrīmad Bhāgavatam 4.18.8
nūnaḿ tā vīrudhaḥ kṣīṇā
mayi kālena bhūyasā
tatra yogena dṛṣṭena
bhavān ādātum arhati

SYNONYMS
nūnam — therefore; tāḥ — those; vīrudhaḥ — herbs and grains; kṣīṇāḥ — deteriorated; mayi — within me; kālena — in course of time; bhūyasā — very much; tatra — therefore; yogena — by proper means; dṛṣṭena — acknowledged; bhavān — Your Majesty; ādātum — to take; arhati — ought.

TRANSLATION
Due to being stocked for a very long time, all the grain seeds within me have certainly deteriorated. Therefore you should immediately arrange to take these seeds out by the standard process, which is recommended by the ācāryas or śāstras.

PURPORT
When there is a scarcity of grain, the government should follow the methods prescribed in the śāstra and approved by the ācāryas; thus there will be a sufficient production of grains, and food scarcity and famine can be checked. Bhagavad-gītā recommends that we perform yajña, sacrifices. By the performance of yajña, sufficient clouds gather in the sky, and when there are sufficient clouds, there is also sufficient rainfall. In this way agricultural matters are taken care of. When there is sufficient grain production, the general populace eats the grains, and animals like cows, goats and other domestic animals eat the grasses and grains also. According to this arrangement, human beings should perform the sacrifices recommended in the śāstras, and if they do so there will no longer be food scarcity. In Kali-yuga, the only sacrifice recommended is sańkīrtana-yajña.

In this verse there are two significant words: yogena, "by the approved method," and dṛṣṭena, "as exemplified by the former ācāryas." One is mistaken if he thinks that by applying modern machines such as tractors, grains can be produced. If one goes to a desert and uses a tractor, there is still no possibility of producing grains. We may adopt various means, but it is essential to know that the planet earth will stop producing grains if sacrifices are not performed. The earth has already explained that because nondevotees are enjoying the production of food, she has reserved food seeds for the performance of sacrifice. Now, of course, atheists will not believe in this spiritual method of producing grains, but whether they believe or not, the fact remains that we are not independent to produce grain by mechanical means. As far as the approved method is concerned, it is enjoined in the śāstras that intelligent men in this age will take to the sańkīrtana movement, and by so doing they shall worship the Supreme Personality of Godhead Lord Caitanya, whose bodily complexion is golden and who is always accompanied by His confidential devotees to preach this Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement all over the world. In its present condition, the world can only be saved by introducing this sańkīrtana, this Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement. As we have learned from the previous verse, one who is not in Kṛṣṇa consciousness is considered a thief. Even though he may be materially very advanced, a thief cannot be placed in a comfortable position. A thief is a thief, and he is punishable. Because people are without Kṛṣṇa consciousness, they have become thieves, and consequently they are being punished by the laws of material nature. No one can check this, not even by introducing so many relief funds and humanitarian institutions. Unless the people of the world take to Kṛṣṇa consciousness, there will be a scarcity of food and much suffering.

Śrīmad Bhāgavatam 4.18.21
yakṣa-rakṣāḿsi bhūtāni
piśācāḥ piśitāśanāḥ
bhūteśa-vatsā duduhuḥ
kapāle kṣatajāsavam

SYNONYMS
yakṣa — the Yakṣas (the descendants of Kuvera); rakṣāḿsi — the Rākṣasas (meat-eaters); bhūtāni — ghosts; piśācāḥ — witches; piśita-aśanāḥ — who are all habituated to eating flesh; bhūteśa — Lord Śiva's incarnation Rudra; vatsāḥ — whose calf; duduhuḥ — milked out; kapāle — in a pot of skulls; kṣata-ja — blood; āsavam — a fermented beverage.

TRANSLATION
Then the Yakṣas, Rākṣasas, ghosts and witches, who are habituated to eating flesh, transformed Lord Śiva's incarnation Rudra [Bhūtanātha] into a calf and milked out beverages made of blood and put them in a pot made of skulls.

PURPORT
There are some types of living entities in the form of human beings whose living conditions and eatables are most abominable. Generally they eat flesh and fermented blood, which is mentioned in this verse as kṣatajāsavam. The leaders of such degraded men known as Yakṣas, Rākṣasas, bhūtas and piśācas, are all in the mode of ignorance. They have been placed under the control of Rudra. Rudra is the incarnation of Lord Śiva and is in charge of the mode of ignorance in material nature. Another name of Lord Śiva is Bhūtanātha, meaning "master of ghosts." Rudra was born from between Brahmā's eyes when Brahmā was very angry at the four Kumāras.

Millk given to serpent increases his venom!

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

His Grace Gurusevananda prabhu is a disciple of His Holiness Jaya Pataka Swami. After preaching for several years in Brazil, his home country, Gurusevananda prabhu moved to Mayapur where he teaches Sanskrit at the Gurukula.

Śrīmad Bhāgavatam 4.18.22
tathāhayo dandaśūkāḥ
sarpā nāgāś ca takṣakam
vidhāya vatsaḿ duduhur
bila-pātre viṣaḿ payaḥ

SYNONYMS
tathā — similarly; ahayaḥ — snakes without hoods; dandaśūkāḥ — scorpions; sarpāḥ — cobras; nāgāḥ — big snakes; ca — and; takṣakam — Takṣaka, chief of the snakes; vidhāya — making; vatsam — calf; duduhuḥ — milked out; bila-pātre — in the pot of snake holes; viṣam — poison; payaḥ — as milk.

TRANSLATION
Thereafter cobras and snakes without hoods, large snakes, scorpions and many other poisonous animals took poison out of the planet earth as their milk and kept this poison in snake holes. They made a calf out of Takṣaka.

PURPORT
Within this material world there are various types of living entities, and the different types of reptiles and scorpions mentioned in this verse are also provided with their sustenance by the arrangement of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. The point is that everyone is taking his eatables from the planet earth. According to one's association with the material qualities, one develops a certain type of character. Payaḥ-pānaḿ bhujańgānām: if one feeds a serpent milk, the snake will simply increase his venom. However, if one supplies milk to a talented sage or saint, the sage will develop finer brain tissues by which he can contemplate higher, spiritual life. Thus the Lord is supplying everyone food, but according to the living entity's association with the modes of material nature, the living entity develops his specific character.

City is not a new modern thing, but was there from time immemorial SB 4.18.32

via Mayapur TV Archives by ashok on 7/15/11

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Janmastami dasa joined ISKCON in 1977 and for the next 16 years distributed books all over North America serving as the Sankirtana Leader in seven temples and then as the National Sankirtana Leader for the United States from 1988 - 1991. He served as the Temple President for the Denver temple from 1992 - 1996. In 1997 he moved with his wife, Samkalpa Devi Dasi, and two sons, Prahlada and Devala Rsi, to Mayapur, where he has been working in educational development ever since. In 1999 the Mayapur GBC gave him a mandate to start the Mayapur Institute, and he served as its Director from it's inception in 2000 until 2009. He is now focusing all of his energies on curriculum development, teaching, preaching and Vaisnava seva.

Srīmad Bhāgavatam 4.18.27-32
SB 4.18.27: My dear Vidura, chief of the Kurus, in this way King Pṛthu and all the others who subsist on food created different types of calves and milked out their respective eatables. Thus they received their various foodstuffs, which were symbolized as milk.

SB 4.18.28: Thereafter King Pṛthu was very satisfied with the planet earth, for she sufficiently supplied all food to various living entities. Thus he developed an affection for the planet earth, just as if she were his own daughter.

SB 4.18.29: After this, the king of all kings, Mahārāja Pṛthu, leveled all rough places on the surface of the globe by breaking up the hills with the strength of his bow. By his grace the surface of the globe almost became flat.

SB 4.18.30: To all the citizens of the state, King Pṛthu was as good as a father. Thus he was visibly engaged in giving them proper subsistence and proper employment for subsistence. After leveling the surface of the globe, he earmarked different places for residential quarters, inasmuch as they were desirable.

SB 4.18.31: In this way the King founded many types of villages, settlements and towns and built forts, residences for cowherdsmen, stables for the animals, and places for the royal camps, mining places, agricultural towns and mountain villages.

Śrīmad Bhāgavatam 4.18.32
prāk pṛthor iha naivaiṣā
pura-grāmādi-kalpanā
yathā-sukhaḿ vasanti sma
tatra tatrākutobhayāḥ

SYNONYMS
prāk — before; pṛthoḥ — King Pṛthu; iha — on this planet; na — never; eva — certainly; eṣā — this; pura — of towns; grāma-ādi — of villages, etc.; kalpanā — planned arrangement; yathā — as; sukham — convenient; vasanti sma — lived; tatra tatra — here and there; akutaḥ-bhayāḥ — without hesitation.

TRANSLATION
Before the reign of King Pṛthu there was no planned arrangement for different cities, villages, pasturing grounds, etc. Every thing was scattered, and everyone constructed his residential quarters according to his own convenience. However, since King Pṛthu plans were made for towns and villages.

PURPORT
From this statement it appears that town and city planning is not new but has been coming down since the time of King Pṛthu. In India we can see regular planning methods evident in very old cities. In Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam there are many descriptions of such ancient cities. Even five thousand years ago, Lord Kṛṣṇa's capital, Dvārakā, was well planned, and similar other cities — Mathurā and Hastināpura (now New Delhi) — were also well planned. Thus the planning of cities and towns is not a modern innovation but was existing in bygone ages.

Thus end the Bhaktivedanta purports of the Fourth Canto, Eighteenth Chapter, of the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, entitled "Pṛthu Mahārāja Milks the Earth Planet."

TRANSLATION

After Kavi, Mahāvīra and Savana were completely trained in the paramahaḿsa stage of life, Mahārāja Priyavrata ruled the universe for eleven arbudas of years. Whenever he was determined to fix his arrow upon his bowstring with his two powerful arms, all opponents of the regulative principles of religious life would flee from his presence in fear of the unparalleled prowess he displayed in ruling the universe. He greatly loved his wife Barhiṣmatī, and with the increase of days, their exchange of nuptial love also increased. By her feminine behavior as she dressed herself, walked, got up, smiled, laughed, and glanced about, Queen Barhiṣmatī increased his energy. Thus although he was a great soul, he appeared lost in the feminine conduct of his wife. He behaved with her just like an ordinary man, but actually he was a great soul.

PURPORT

In this verse, the word dharma-pratipakṣaḥ ("opponents of religious principles") refers not to a particular faith, but to varṇāśrama-dharma, the division of society, socially and spiritually, into four varṇas (brāhmaṇa, kṣatriya, vaiśya and śūdra) and four āśramas (brahmacarya, gṛhastha, vānaprastha and sannyāsa). To maintain proper social order and help the citizens gradually progress toward the goal of life — namely spiritual understanding — the principles of varṇāśrama-dharma must be accepted. From this verse, Mahārāja Priyavrata appears to have been so strict in maintaining this institution of varṇāśrama-dharma that anyone neglecting it would immediately flee from his presence as soon as the King warned him by fighting or administering light punishment. Indeed, Mahārāja Priyavrata would not have to fight, for simply because of his strong determination, they dared not disobey the rules and regulations of varṇāśrama-dharma. It is said that unless human society is regulated by varṇāśrama-dharma, it is no better than a bestial society of cats and dogs. Mahārāja Priyavrata, therefore, strictly maintained varṇāśrama-dharma by his extraordinary, unparalleled prowess.

To maintain such a life of strict vigilance, one needs encouragement from his wife. In the varṇāśrama-dharma system, certain classes, such as the brāhmaṇas and sannyāsīs, do not need encouragement from the opposite sex. Kṣatriyas and gṛhasthas, however, actually need the encouragement of their wives in order to execute their duties. Indeed, a gṛhastha or kṣatriya cannot properly execute his responsibilities without the association of his wife. Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu personally admitted that a gṛhastha must live with a wife. Kṣatriyas were even allowed to have many wives to encourage them in discharging the duties of government. The association of a good wife is necessary in a life of karma and political affairs. To execute his duties properly, therefore. Mahārāja Priyavrata took advantage of his good wife Barhiṣmatī, who was always very expert in pleasing her great husband by properly dressing herself, smiling, and exhibiting her feminine bodily features. Queen Barhiṣmatī always kept Mahārāja Priyavrata very encouraged, and thus he executed his governmental duty very properly. In this verse iva has twice been used to indicate that Mahārāja Priyavrata acted exactly like a henpecked husband and thereby seemed to have lost his sense of human responsibility. Actually, however, he was fully conscious of his position as a spirit soul, although he seemingly behaved like an acquiescent karmī husband. Mahārāja Priyavrata thus ruled the universe for eleven arbudas of years. One arbuda consists of 100,000,000 years, and Mahārāja Priyavrata ruled the universe for eleven such arbudas.

We are no different than others but falsely thinking to be unique!

We expect others to accept as we are.It means we dont want to change
ourselves to become a better person. This is why there's a widespread
acceptance on the idea of people claiming, "I am what I am", "Be
yourself". Actually we are rascals who defied/defying the existence or
Supremacy of God.So this idea of being ourself means being rascals and
we expect other rascals to accept our rascaldom.
We even want to find a life partner who will completely accept us with
all our shortcomings. Kind of approval we expect from others for all
that we do.
In actuality we are no different than others in most ways. But we have
the false idea that I am unique and different from others. No we all
have the same problems of life birth, death, disease, old age and the
pull of the material modes. We are all in the clutches of material
nature but thinking that we control the material nature.

Any human being should follow some religious principles to be a
human.Otherwise,he's simply an animal.Animals dont care if they are
mixing with sister or mother in sex life. But human civilization is not
meant to be like that.Since there's a constant pull of the lower
nature, the scriptures allow Sense enjoyment to a certain degree but
within the religious principles to gradually progress in the path of
attaining perfection which is to be engaged always in Devotional
Service of Krishna.Sense enjoyment restricted according to religious
principles is in such a way that it does not bind the soul further to
this material world.
Mere Varnashrama Dharma was not considered the topmost activity by
Lord Chaitanya in His discussion with Ramananda Raya.
2.Offerings-Next, Ramananda Raya says yad karosi yad asnasi. Whatever
activity we do we should do it is an offering to Krsna. But Lord
Chaitanya rejects that by saying it is just one step higher than
impersonalism and asks Tell me something more!
3.Ramananda says,Give up Varnashrama Dharma&engage in Devotional
Service.Lord Chaitanya rejected saying that suddenly giving up Dharma
will not produce the desired result.
4.Give up material life&pursue Devotional Service. Lord rejected this as well.
5.Finally Ramananda Raya said,Association with self realized souls
with sincere submission and hearing as the most important one
regardless of one's current status of life.Lord Chaitanya welcomed
this and accepted this to be the highest means to attain perfection.

The thoughts of My pure devotees dwell in Me, their lives are fully devoted to My service

Bhagavad Gita Chapter-10

TEXT 9:

mac-citta mad-gata-prana
bodhayantah parasparam
athayantas ca mam nityam
tushyanti ca ramanti ca

TRANSLATION:

The thoughts of My pure devotees dwell in Me, their lives are fully devoted to My service, and they derive great satisfaction and bliss from always enlightening one another and conversing about Me.

PURPORT:

Pure devotees, whose characteristics are mentioned here, engage themselves fully in the transcendental loving service of the Lord. Their minds cannot be diverted from the lotus feet of Krishna. Their talks are solely on the transcendental subjects. The symptoms of the pure devotees are described in this verse specifically. Devotees of the Supreme Lord are twenty-four hours daily engaged in glorifying the qualities and pastimes of the Supreme Lord. Their hearts and souls are constantly submerged in Krishna, and they take pleasure in discussing Him with other devotees.

In the preliminary stage of devotional service they relish the transcendental pleasure from the service itself, and in the mature stage they are actually situated in love of God. Once situated in that transcendental position, they can relish the highest perfection which is exhibited by the Lord in His abode. Lord Caitanya likens transcendental devotional service to the sowing of a seed in the heart of the living entity. There are innumerable living entities traveling throughout the different planets of the universe, and out of them there are a few who are fortunate enough to meet a pure devotee and get the chance to understand devotional service. This devotional service is just like a seed, and if it is sown in the heart of a living entity, and if he goes on hearing and chanting Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare, that seed fructifies, just as the seed of a tree fructifies with regular watering.

Developing Devotional Service Part 2

(Kadamba Kanana Swami, 2005)

As we are developing our devotional practise very nicely, then the transformation will take place by the causeless mercy of the Lord and we begin to develop qualities. When we begin to develop qualities then things change; our whole life will change; the environment will change; everything will change. Just like it is described about the six Goswamis:

'Dhīrādhīra-jana-priyau priya-karau'.

They were dear to the gentle and the ruffians…they were dear to everybody. Even to heavy dudes……another word for 'ruffians'. Even to all kinds of most degraded personalities, they were still highly respected and appreciated. So this is the natural feature of a vaisnava. Then in all directions everything becomes auspicious!

In all directions there are so many opportunities to spread Krishna Consciousness. So we must somehow or other ourselves become embodiments of the teachings of Krishna. So that's where this Nectar of Devotion book is like one of the pillars of our spiritual life… it is the map of spiritual life, and every devotee should read this book – especially the beginning chapters!

Developing Devotional Service Part 1

(Kadamba Kanana Swami, 2005)

We are somehow or other trying to get enlivened in our Krishna Consciousness by cultivating Krishna Consciousness. See no one can say:

"I'm not feeling enlivened in Krishna Consciousness. It's such a struggle…it doesn't work!"

The answer is:

"No that 'it' doesn't work! That word 'it' is where you make the mistake…it is 'you'. You should change the word 'it' for 'you'. That is the problem – it works but you're not working!"

"No! I'm working like anything. No… I've done so much service and I'm running around….chanting….and getting up really early everyday. I am doing so many things and there is no time".

No…no…no! You are just running around….that's okay, but you are not working properly. Working in Krishna Consciousness means that we must perform the activities as I have explained by Rupa Goswami. This book is our map, so when we get lost, we take the Nectar of Devotion book, and here it is.We take this book and when we read it. Especially the first fourteen chapters, which they gave it to us….again and again. In there the whole five potent forms of devotional service is in chapter thirteen:

'Techniques of hearing and remembering; further consideration of devotional principles; offenses to be avoided; evidence regarding devotional principles'.

If you have any doubt, then read it again…again – the evidence….the strong evidence! So that we become really fixed up and in this way devotional service surpasses all liberation! All liberation means all freedom from pain!

We are looking for relief, but to create us relief is devotional service, which is right here! So any doubt, then read it again….ten times on that chapter! So in this way eligibility of the candidate for accepting devotional service is all described.

'How we can all become eligible…..the first stage of devotion….the characteristics of pure devotional service'.

All these things are given and if we follow the Nectar of Devotion, then surely it will work in Krishna Consciousness… without a doubt it works for everyone, and that's the idea!

On Monday morning Maharaja left Cape Town and flew to Johannesburg. Since there was a few hours in transit before his international flight to Frankfurt, Maharaja stopped-over at Archarya Prabhu's flat for a quick lunch and to refresh prior to the long trip ahead.

After a ten hour overnight flight and a four hour train journey the next morning, Maharaja finally arrived at Munich temple. He rested for a short period and then gave an amazing lecture about the elevated levels of vision that's achievable when engaged in devotional service. Following the class, Maharaja also had personal conversations with some of the devotees. It was another late night and then off to Serbia the next day!

Enjoy the pictures…
