How to become transcendental to the modes of material nature?

Bhagavad-gita As It Is | Part [BG.14.22]

TEXT 26:
mam ca yo 'vyabhicarena
bhakti-yogena sevate
sa gunan samatityaitan
brahma-bhuyaya kalpate

TRANSLATION:
One who engages in full devotional service, unfailing in all circumstances, at once transcends the modes of material nature and thus comes to the level of Brahman.

PURPORT:
This verse is a reply to Arjuna's third question: What is the means of attaining to the transcendental position? As explained before, the material world is acting under the spell of the modes of material nature. One should not be disturbed by the activities of the modes of nature; instead of putting his consciousness into such activities, he may transfer his consciousness to Krishna activities. Krishna activities are known as bhakti-yoga—always acting for Krishna. This includes not only Krishna, but His different plenary expansions such as Rama and Narayana. He has innumerable expansions. One who is engaged in the service of any of the forms of Krishna, or of His plenary expansions, is considered to be transcendentally situated. One should also note that all the forms of Krishna are fully transcendental, blissful, full of knowledge and eternal. Such personalities of Godhead are omnipotent and omniscient, and they possess all transcendental qualities. So if one engages himself in the service of Krishna or His plenary expansions with unfailing determination, although these modes of material nature are very difficult to overcome, one can overcome them easily. This has already been explained in the Seventh Chapter. One who surrenders unto Krishna at once surmounts the influence of the modes of material nature. To be in Krishna consciousness or in devotional service means to acquire equality with Krishna. The Lord says that His nature is eternal, blissful and full of knowledge, and the living entities are part and parcel of the Supreme, as gold particles are part of a gold mine. Thus the living entity, in his spiritual position, is as good as gold, as good as Krishna in quality. The difference of individuality continues, otherwise there would be no question of bhakti-yoga. Bhakti-yoga means that the Lord is there, the devotee is there and the activity of exchange of love between the Lord and the devotee is there. Therefore the individuality of two persons is present in the Supreme Personality of Godhead and the individual person, otherwise there would be no meaning to bhakti-yoga. If one is not situated in the same transcendental position with the Lord, one cannot serve the Supreme Lord. To be a personal assistant to a king, one must acquire the qualifications. Thus the qualification is to become Brahman, or freed from all material contamination. It is said in the Vedic literature, brahmaiva san brahmapy eti. One can attain the Supreme Brahman by becoming Brahman. This means that one must qualitatively become one with Brahman. By attainment of Brahman, one does not lose his eternal Brahman identity as an individual soul.

50,000 visits to Krishna. Thanks everyone!

Today marks the day for 50,000 visits to the blog, Krishna, the sacred space in the web. Thank you subscribers, well-wishers and readers to make this happen. I will continue to strive posting interesting content that are rich in quality, precision, love. Above all this work is meant for pleasing the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Sri Krishna by spreading His words, deeds and pastimes for the suffering mankind of this age of kali, according to the scriptures and the sadhus.

Some of my friends told me that the scriptures are old and most of which are not applicable to this age. So they didnt bother to read/accept the lines of scriptures. They didnot understand the fact that this knowledge or science is beyond time and space just like our soul. Whatever spoken by a perfect being remains perfect all the time. God is perfect in every respect. No man can claim to be perfect in everything he does. Scriptures are handed down by God Himself.

The words of God are true at all times past, present and future. Someone says something today and tomorrow it becomes false but the scriptures are not like that. When Krishna spoke Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna, 5000 years ago, He didnt say that he is releasing version two of the Bhagavad Gita because what He told millions of years ago to sun God Vivasvan was very old and therefore it's inapplicable,no.

Krishna is perfect because He is the knower of the past present and future. No one knows his own past or present accurately. But Krishna claims He sees through the past, present and future. It also means He exist at all times and we do exist all the time. He is conscious of all that pervades the cosmos. He is the perfect knower and the source of all knowledge.

Please participate in commenting on the blog or adding any comments and counterpoints if any to give more life to the blog. Thanks again my friends!

The blessed one who reads this octet on the teacher,
Be he a brahmachari, or a king or householder or a saint,
If his mind bows before the words of the teacher,
He would attain the great state of ultimate salvation,
Which his mind always hankers for.

If a person only once chants the holy name&completely surrenders unto the lotus feet of the Lord, the Lord immediately considers him His ward and is always inclined to give him protection

Bhaktivedanta VedaBase: Śrīmad Bhāgavatam 6.2.49

mriyamāṇo harer nāma
gṛṇan putropacāritam
ajāmilo 'py agād dhāma
kim uta śraddhayā gṛṇan

SYNONYMS

mriyamāṇaḥ — at the time of death; hareḥ nāma — the holy name of Hari; gṛṇan — chanting; putra-upacāritam — indicating his son; ajāmilaḥ — Ajāmila; api — even; agāt — went; dhāma — to the spiritual world; kim uta — what to speak of; śraddhayā — with faith and love; gṛṇan — chanting.

TRANSLATION

While suffering at the time of death, Ajāmila chanted the holy name of the Lord, and although the chanting was directed toward his son, he nevertheless returned home, back to Godhead. Therefore if one faithfully and inoffensively chants the holy name of the Lord, where is the doubt that he will return to Godhead?

PURPORT

At the time of death one is certainly bewildered because his bodily functions are in disorder. At that time, even one who throughout his life has practiced chanting the holy name of the Lord may not be able to chant the Hare Kṛṣṇa mantra very distinctly. Nevertheless, such a person receives all the benefits of chanting the holy name. While the body is fit therefore, why should we not chant the holy name of the Lord loudly and distinctly? If one does so, it is quite possible that even at the time of death he will be properly able to chant the holy name of the Lord with love and faith. In conclusion, one who chants the holy name of the Lord constantly is guaranteed to return home, back to Godhead, without a doubt.

Supplementary note to this chapter.

Śrīla Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura's commentary to texts nine and ten of this chapter form a dialogue concerning how one can become free from all sinful reactions simply by chanting the holy name of the Lord.

Someone may say, "It may be accepted that by chanting the holy name of the Lord one becomes freed from all the reactions of sinful life. However, if one commits sinful acts in full consciousness, not only once but many, many times, he is unable to free himself from the reactions of such sins even after atoning for them for twelve years or more. How is it possible, then, that simply by once chanting the holy name of the Lord one immediately becomes freed from the reactions of such sins?"

Śrīla Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura replies by quoting verses nine and ten of this chapter: "The chanting of the holy name of Lord Viṣṇu is the best process of atonement for a thief of gold or other valuables, for a drunkard, for one who betrays a friend or relative, for one who kills a brāhmaṇa, or for one who indulges in sex with the wife of his guru or another superior. It is also the best method of atonement for one who murders women, the king or his father, for one who slaughters cows, and for all other sinful men. Simply by chanting the holy name of Lord Viṣṇu, such sinful persons may attract the attention of the Supreme Lord, who therefore considers "Because this man has chanted My holy name, My duty is to give him protection.' "

One may atone for sinful life and vanquish all sinful reactions by chanting the holy name, although this is not called atonement. Ordinary atonement may temporarily protect a sinful person, but it does not completely cleanse his heart of the deep-rooted desire to commit sinful acts. Therefore atonement is not as powerful as the chanting of the holy name of the Lord. In the śāstras it is said that if a person only once chants the holy name and completely surrenders unto the lotus feet of the Lord, the Lord immediately considers him His ward and is always inclined to give him protection. This is confirmed by Śrīdhara Svāmī. Thus when Ajāmila was in great danger of being carried off by the order carriers of Yamarāja, the Lord immediately sent His personal order carriers to protect him, and because Ajāmila was freed from all sinful reactions, the Viṣṇudūtas spoke on his behalf.

Ajāmila had named his son Nārāyaṇa, and because he loved the boy very much, he would call him again and again. Although he was calling for his son, the name itself was powerful because the name Nārāyaṇa is not different from the Supreme Lord Nārāyaṇa. When Ajāmila named his son Nārāyaṇa, all the reactions of his sinful life were neutralized, and as he continued calling his son and thus chanting the holy name of Nārāyaṇa thousands of times, he was actually unconsciously advancing in Kṛṣṇa consciousness.

One may argue, "Since he was constantly chanting the name of Nārāyaṇa, how was it possible for him to be associating with a prostitute and thinking of wine?" By his sinful actions he was bringing suffering upon himself again and again, and therefore one may say that his ultimate chanting of Nārāyaṇa was the cause of his being freed. However, his chanting would then have been a nāma-aparādha. Nāmno balād yasya hi pāpa-buddhiḥ: one who continues to act sinfully and tries to neutralize his sins by chanting the holy name of the Lord is a nāma-aparādhī, an offender to the holy name. In response it may be said that Ajāmila's chanting was inoffensive because he did not chant the name of Nārāyaṇa with the purpose of counteracting his sins. He did not know that he was addicted to sinful actions, nor did he know that his chanting of the name of Nārāyaṇa was neutralizing them. Thus he did not commit a nāma-aparādha, and his repeated chanting of the holy name of Nārāyaṇa while calling his son may be called pure chanting. Because of this pure chanting, Ajāmila unconsciously accumulated the results of bhakti. Indeed, even his first utterance of the holy name was sufficient to nullify all the sinful reactions of his life. To cite a logical example, a fig tree does not immediately yield fruits, but in time the fruits are available. Similarly, Ajāmila's devotional service grew little by little, and therefore although he committed very sinful acts, the reactions did not affect him. In the śāstras it is said that if one chants the holy name of the Lord even once, the reactions of past, present or future sinful life do not affect him. To give another example, if one extracts the poison fangs of a serpent, this saves the serpent's future victims from poisonous effects, even if the serpent bites repeatedly. Similarly, if a devotee chants the holy name even once inoffensively, this protects him eternally. He need only wait for the results of the chanting to mature in due course of time.

Bhaktivedanta VedaBase: Srimad Bhagavatam 6.2.11

na nishkritair uditair brahma-vadibhis
tatha visuddhyaty aghavan vratadibhih
yatha harer nama-padair udahritais
tad uttamasloka-gunopalambhakam

SYNONYMS

na -- not; nishkritaih -- by the processes of atonement; uditaih -- prescribed; brahma-vadibhih -- by learned scholars such as Manu; tatha -- to that extent; visuddhyati -- becomes purified; agha-van -- a sinful man; vrata-adibhih -- by observing the vows and regulative principles; yatha -- as; hareh -- of Lord Hari; nama-padaih -- by the syllables of the holy name; udahritaih -- chanted; tat -- that; uttamasloka -- of the Supreme Personality of Godhead; guna -- of the transcendental qualities; upalambhakam -- reminding one.

TRANSLATION

By following the Vedic ritualistic ceremonies or undergoing atonement, sinful men do not become as purified as by chanting once the holy name of Lord Hari. Although ritualistic atonement may free one from sinful reactions, it does not awaken devotional service, unlike the chanting of the Lord's names, which reminds one of the Lord's fame, qualities, attributes, pastimes and paraphernalia.

PURPORT

Srila Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura comments that the chanting of the holy name of the Lord has special significance that distinguishes it from the Vedic ritualistic ceremonies of atonement for severe, more severe or most severe sinful actions. There are twenty types of religious scriptures called dharma-sastras, beginning with the Manu-samhita and parasara-samhita, but herein it is stressed that although one may become free from the reactions of the most sinful activities by following the religious principles of these scriptures, this cannot promote a sinful man to the stage of loving service to the Lord. On the other hand, chanting the holy name of the Lord even once not only frees one immediately from the reactions of the greatest sins, but also raises one to the platform of rendering loving service to the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is described as uttamasloka because He is famous for His glorious activities. Thus one serves the Lord by remembering His form, His attributes and pastimes. Srila Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura explains that this is all possible simply by chanting the Lord's holy name because of the Lord's omnipotence. What cannot be achieved through the performance of Vedic rituals can be easily achieved through the chanting of the Lord's holy name. To chant the holy name and dance in ecstasy is so easy and sublime that one can achieve all the benefits of spiritual life simply by following this process. Therefore Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu declares, param vijayate sri-krishna-sankirtanam: "All glories to Sri Krishna sankirtana!" The sankirtana movement we have started offers the best process for becoming purified of all sinful reactions and coming immediately to the platform of spiritual life.

Arise of irreligion, rights of women, ghostly beings!

Not knowing what is good for the self and for the society, the demoniac class of people engage in all sorts of activities that bring only distress, fear, anxiety and darkness to oneself and all.But the Supreme Lord Sri Krishna descends Himself to free His devotees from the clutches of evil. In the Bhagavad Gita, when Arjuna asks about the destination of unsuccessful yogi,Krsna assures that one who does Good My friend is never overcome by evil.

There was one demoniac poet in south india who was very much welcomed by all people because all his poems where atheistic&against the Vedic civilization. Actually this contrary nature of people against Vedic civilization is a stumbling block for preaching God or Krsna consciousness to the general mass of suffering people.

This poet said there are no ghosts. But he himself was one ;-). From Bhagavad Gita, we learn Krsna telling those who worship ghosts will take birth among such beings. Indirectly this poet is telling Krishna's words are false.Because he himself was a ghost and hence could not recognize the words of God. This is the idea-as long as we are covered by the modes of material nature, we are held captive by the ghosts of lust greed pride anger madness envy.

In public places husband and wife should not get together in an intimate manner(for not disturbing the minds of people with ignorance) but he acted like a madman holding the hands of his wife on the road&thought he was doing great work and creating a revolution in again teh vedic traditions.

The most pitiable thing is his poems are in most part of the educational curriculum for children of elementary classes itself. The wonderful part is he was killed by an elephant of Parthasarathi temple, South India. I believe this elephant to be a devotee of the Lord. Thus horrible was the end of his life for he did horrible things during his life. It's my misfortune to have read his poems byheart at a young age. May be I will have to reread in a vedic school from class 1 again :) Someone sponsor to me ;-)

He was fighting for the rights of women. He raised slogans such as women are not meant for kitchen, women should also be allowed to study. If they come to study this rascal&his followers will do all nonsense. But for what they have to study? Why should they study in public schools?
He didnt get the idea of what is knowledge according to Bhagavad Gita. Women should study but not this nonsense taught in modern schools. Simply by serving elevated souls, women can surpass their lower nature. We see in one instance where in the forest when Krsna Balaram and the cowherd boys come to the learned brahmanas for food, the vedic brahmins are busy chanting the mantras but the women were so affectionate with devotion that they gave all bhoga to the hungry Lord & His associates.

They are not learned women but Krsna was so pleased with them by their service. This is actually knowledge and the culmination of all knowledge. The Supreme Lord Himself comes but the foolish brahmanas could not recognize even though they have learned Vedic scriptures.

Education is meant to shape the character of a person. But today I see with my own eyes, the students who are graduated from the best colleges are the worst in terms of character and behaviour. They dont know how to respect elders. They dont know how to be chaste. Because if women are polluted the whole society will be ruined. This was the main reason women were protected at home by all means. But today these rascals who want to enjoy and exploit women have created these irreligious principles to bring women everywhere It's heart breaking to see polluted men and women everywhere.
