(H H Kadamba Kanana Swami, 9th February 2012, Leicester, England) Lecture: SB 1.2.19

I gave the example of pride – when suddenly someone loses everything and is humble:

'Alright Krishna wants me to develop humility.'

Or someone may experience anger and how it is getting out of hand. I myself had an experience as a kid, which stayed with me for my whole life. There was a boy at school who said:

'What do you think of this joke.'

And he pokes his a finger in my eye! Well I got angry beyond myself. I got so angry that I kind of twisted his arms and smacked him against the wall. I was really in a destruction mode, and he broke his arm! He started to scream really loud. I ran and all the kids ran after me, but I out ran them all. I ran very fast, and shook them off. Later, when I returned back to school in the afternoon, and the head teacher was there and I was the criminal. I thought it was not fair because the guy had poked me in the eye, but he broke his arm!

What a drama, first at school and then at home my father was saying:

'The insurance policy is going up!'

To make it worse in the same week, I kicked the football through the main glass window! One month later, there was some road works and the pumps, pipes and planks were there. I was there showing my brother a flying bicycle trick, when this old lady decided to come out on the walkway of our house and she also broke her arm! So it was a total disaster. It's like in a span of two – three months it was a big disaster, which stayed with me for the whole life. I controlled anger after that. Watch out with anger! I also didn't do any more flying bicycle rides….I never did one again.

So we do learn certain things in life, which help us to control the qualities that arise from the modes of material nature, and that is sufficient. So rather then looking at:

'What is the cause? Why do I have this anger? Maybe in my last life I already had this anger problem. If I go back to the last life then I will solve it!'

Well, okay, probably in the last life you had an anger problem, and you did not solved it. So are you going to solve it now or what? Or are you going to wait until the next life again? It's time to solve it now! Do not wait until it gets out of hand, just solve it now! So anger is meant to be controlled So in this way, we learn through circumstances, but Prabhupada points out:

'Better learn through hearing!'

That is the first part of the approach – to learn from hearing. One who is less intelligent has to learn through experience- one who has no brain at all, that even after experiencing it, one still doesn't learn………………so we are suppose to learn from hearing and through experience, and most of us learn from the combination of these two.

I must admit that in my life also in many cases learning by the circumstances and the scriptures give the purport. Often times the scriptures gave the purport to the lesson I learnt from the circumstances! But a very wise person can immediately just learn from the scriptures. Krishna may still give us confirmation after that! So we understand that, yes you have to be humble, and Krishna will give us real life situations where we are forced to be humble. To reconfirm yes, you really have to be humble, since Krishna will test us!

Effect of Chanting

Q. Can a mantra really neutralize the sins already done or does it only give the courage to bear the pain (result)?
The Holy Name of God can actually eradicate the reactions for all the sins already committed.
Not only that, scriptures state that when properly chanted, hari-nama can destroy more sins than one can possibly ever commit.

In order to derive the full benefit of chanting --- it can even burn up the residual tendency in the heart to commit further sins! --- chanting must be taken up properly. One should carefully avoid the ten kinds of offenses in chanting, especially the mentality that one can continue sinning and that it will be adjusted on the strength of chanting. Conversely, an attitude of surrender, sincere repentance and adherence to a theistic way of life are favorable and quickly help to perfect one's chanting.

Chanting gives immediate relief from the blazing reactions of past sins, and quickly ushers in auspiciousness - this can be tangibly experienced in our lives. Yet, as long as we are in this material ocean, its waves and whirlpools will not cease; that is to say that by taking up chanting it is not to be expected that there will be never be another difficulty/pain/reversal in one's life. But these do not have the same disturbing effect upon those who take firm shelter in the Holy Name. In that sense, one could say that chanting gives the spiritual strength to tolerate material disturbances, but this is not the same as suffering that comes from past sins. And the Holy Name ultimately delivers one from this treacherous material existence altogether.

Everything comes from Chanting!

While chanting very prayerfully, one's motivation and intensity of desire to please Krishna increases. One of the specific ways in which our desire to please Krishna intensifies is to desire to present ourselves before Krishna with finer qualities, and fewer faults, flaws, shortcomings, etc. With this purpose in mind, we naturally begin to endeavor to obtain these better qualities, motivated NOT by something material hankering (for respect, accetance by others, praise, gaining a sense of self-accomplishment, etc), but ONLY to increase the happiness Krishna receives when we come before Him to offer Him our services. Only by His bestowing His mercy, however, not by our efforts alone, the desirable good qualities develop to enhance the pleasure of Krishna. Thus, one is not chanting while separately in pursuit good qualities. In fact, everything comes from chanting!

My world is different from your world and the real world!

We see the world as a reflection of our mind

this does not infer that when we are good,we see only good,no we get the eyes to discriminate what is good and what is bad&act accordingly.
A beautiful story to narrate this follows,
Once a person was found lying prostate on the ground. Following was the incident
1. It was in the evening that a drunkard man came by that side and seeing this man lying on the road,he thought to himself, this is another drunkard lying down like me. Then after he left.
2. Later in the middle of the night, a thief passed by that side and having seen this person found lying down,he thought to himself,oh this is another thief who is lying here exhausted after stealing so much!
3. Then in the early hours of the morning a saintly person was passing by. Seeing this man lying on the road,he recognized that it was another saintly person who is in deep meditation lying down in trance. Then he started massaging the feet of the saint and helped him.
Both the drunkard and thieves failed to see the reality because they themselves were illusioned. But the saint being in goodness saw the reality. Therefore this mode of goodness is favourable for us to take our consciousness to higher states of Godliness.

It's said that Man is made after God but today people think Man has made God. There's no limit to the sky and so as the stupidity of the people. People see God with their small minds like themselves. When the scriptures say,God has created floating stones or God has lifted hill we disbelieve it thinking how is it possible? Yes it's not possible for us but for God. Here we limit God with our limitations. Again when the scriptures say the Lord dances with girls in the middle of the night, we think it is similar to the ones we do in the pub. Here we tend to see God with a passion for women. But it's we who are so not God.

This is why Lord Krishna says in Bhagavad Gita that one who sees My birth, pastimes to be transcendental to the material nature does not take birth again in this material world.

On the other hand Krsna also says,Fools mock at Me when I descend in the human form. They dont know My transcendental superior nature.

The problem with goodness is one would feel complacent and happy even within this world and therefore stays back in this world. But it's difficult to stay even in goodness for long time because everyone is forced to act helplessly according to the modes one has acquired, therefore no can refrain from doing something even for a moment.
Sometimes the mode of goodness dominates the mode of passion and ignorance, while passion dominates the other two sometimes and ignorance dominates the other two at other times.

But a person performing devotional service to the Supreme Lord at once surpasses all these 3 modes or the ropes that bind oneself to repeated birth and death in this material world. One who sees that the self does nothing at all but only the modes are in action sees things as they are.

There are principles to regulate attachment and aversion pertaining to matter or the asat. By following such religious principles one must gradually elevate the consciousness of the self to goodness and then perform devotional service to see the reality and Real World.

Without sacrifice no one can be happy in this life nor in the next!

When it rains heavily, people used to pray to God that their rooftops be spared. But today when it rains people are going in cars, put on their wipers on the windshield. So modern world people have expelled God out of God's own creation. Problem is people think that this creation is meant for our enjoyment but it's really meant for the enjoyment of God. By co-operating or serving to please God we the servants of God will also become happy.

People used to pray to God for the want of rain. Now in modern world people put on switch to get water from pumpsets.

The concept of over population is another non-sense. Mother Nature can support all necessities for even 100 times the number of population in the world provided the population is God conscious. Krishna says in Bhagavad Gita that,This material nature is working under My supervision. By My will it's created and destroyed again and again. So when God or Krishna is pleased, the material nature produces all necessities in abundance. It's true that this world is temporary and miserable. But still if one wants to be happy or peaceful to a relatively higher level, one has to perform sacrifices to please the Lord and His agents carrying out the cosmic arrangements.Without sacrifice no one can be happy in this life nor in the next!
