After capturing animals, a cunning hunter does not putfaith in them, for they might run away. Similarly, those who are advanced inspiritual life do not put faith in the mind. They always remainvigilant and watch the mind's action.

The mind is by nature very restless, and one shouldnot make friends with it. If we place full confidence in the mind, it may cheatus at any moment.

The first business of one trying to advance inspiritual life is to control the mind and senses.

An unchaste woman is very easily carried away byparamours, and it sometimes happens that her husband is violently killed by herparamours. If the yogi gives his mind a chance and does not restrain it, hismind will give facility to enemies like lust, anger and greed, and they willdoubtlessly kill the yogi.

Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura used to saythat in the morning our first business should be to beat the mind with shoes ahundred times. and, before going to bed, to beat the mind a hundred times witha broomstick. In this way one's mind can be kept under control.

An uncontrolledmind and an unchaste wife are the same. An unchaste wife can kill her husbandat any time, and an uncontrolled mind, followed by lust, anger, greed, madness, envy and illusion, can certainly kill the yogi. When the yogi is controlled bythe mind, he falls down into the material condition. One should be very carefulof the mind, just as a husband should be careful of an unchaste wife.

The mind is the root cause of lust, anger, pride, greed, lamentation, illusion and fear. Combined, these constitute bondage tofruitive activity. What learned man would put faith in the mind?

The mind isthe original cause of material bondage. It is followed by many enemies, such asanger, pride, greed, lamentation, illusion and fear. The best way to controlthe mind is to engage it always in Krsna consciousness (sa vai manahkrsna-padaravindayoh [SB 9.4.18]). Since the followers of the mind bring aboutmaterial bondage, we should be very careful not to trust the mind.

OFFER WHAT IS MOST DEAR

"Whatever is most desired by one within this material world, and whatever is most dear to oneself -- one should offer that very thing to Me. Such an offering qualifies one for eternal life."

One should offer his most dear possession to Lord Krsna, not that which is superfluous or unwanted. If one is most attached to his family, one should see that his family is engaged in Lord Krsna's service. If one is most attached to money, that should be given for propagating Krsna consciousness. And if one considers one's intelligence to be most valuable, he should preach Krsna consciousness with great logic and reason. If we offer our most valuable possessions to Lord Krsna, we will automatically become dear to the Lord and go back to Godhead.

"Whatever one finds pleasing or enjoyable he should immediately offer to the Supreme Lord, and even his wife, children, home and very life air he should offer at the lotus feet of the Supreme Personality of Godhead."

Srimad Bhagavatam

We have to collect spiritual wealth

Kadamba Kanana Swami, Cape Town, SA, 23rd Dec 2011) Lecture – SB 7.14.4

We have to collect spiritual wealth in our spiritual life. We can't just sit there. Like in the Hitopadeśa:

'The lion cannot just sleep, and wait for the deer to walk into his mouth. It's the lion who has to go out there and get it. Get that deer!'

It's easy for a while, but still you have to run for it. So like that, we have to go after things, and these are the things that support our vows. Therefore, taking vows in it self is nice but not so powerful! It's really about, what do we do next? What do we do after that? Can we get meaningful? That's really what will make a very big difference. It's not like:

'Okay, I've got the initiation, yeah!'

Okay, so you got it, so see what you can do now. How can you make it meaningful? That is very powerful. So this theme with living with vows – I like, and also I once said that, if you the follow the vows and make something of the vows, then they become a great asset! And through them you'll get great spiritual wealth! But if you don't follow them, then they will be with you and will be beating your heart, and thinking of it all of time:

'Bang, bang ….I know I should be….bang, bang……..Oh, no I can't….I'm a loser….bang, bang….bang!'

But if we make something out of it, then it will be very nice. So spiritual life is like that, since each time there is something to do, to collect spiritual wealth…to be nectar hunters, and go for advance hunting that' s little interesting, so okay explore it!
