Lecture – Caitanya-caritamrta Part 4

Sanatana Goswami was meeting all the vaisnavas with Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu for the first time. He had met Mahaprabhu in Benares and he had been instructed by Him but he didn't meet all of Mahaprabhu's associates. Now for the first time, he meets Mahaprabhu's associates. When he sees them, he offers obeisances to them. They give him honour, friendship and mercy which is really interesting.

They give him honour for his qualifications. They give him friendship, but also mercy because they have that association of the Lord, and therefore they can also give that mercy. It is very interesting how that relationship exists and how it is refined… and shows what vaisnava relationships are about, based on honour, friendship and mercy!

Looking at the eternal

(Kadamba Kanana Swami, 2nd Jan 2012, Simhachalan, Germany) Caitanya-caritāmṛta talk

We see that Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu offers not only amazing transcendental pastimes. Transcendental past times that someone sometimes goes completely beyond material consideration! We remember that in Srivasa Thakura's house the kirtan was going on, and his son died during the kirtan, and Srivasa didn't care at all! When some of the ladies were crying in the house, he was just saying:

"Be quiet! You are disturbing the kirtan!"

He didn't want the kirtan to be disturbed in anyway! So that is very transcendental. Really looking at the eternal and not at all touched by the temporary reality!

Moving the problem elsewhere

(Kadamba Kanana Swami, Mayapur, November 2011) Lecture – Caitanya-caritamrta part 7

Karmis generally think that the interaction of fruitive activities can be counteracted by all the karma. In other words if something goes wrong, then by doing something else, you can fix it. That is what the materialistic people are thinking and doing. All the time they are fixing what is broken, and making an adjustment by fixing it. Karmis generally think that the interactions of fruitive activity can be counteracted by other karma or fruitive activity. If one suffers due to his past fruitive activities, then he cannot counteract his suffering by performing auspicious activities.

The suffering of human society cannot be counteracted by material plans. The only way suffering cannot be mitigated is by Krishna Consciousness! So it may be a little bewildering, but I have one example:

Remember the days(at least for those who are grey, old and bold) of when suitcases had no wheels! And you had to carry them in your hands, and you carry them in one hand until your fingers bent, and you couldn't stretch it anymore. Then you carried it on the other hand, and had to walk one hundred metres. If you were very serious then you carry it on the shoulder. If you had been to India then you would even carry it on the head. Seriously when I came back from India I was proudly carrying the suitcase on my head! In Africa they carry suitcases on their heads.

So the result of karma (when it gets out of hand) is like one of those suitcases which are really heavy, and your fingers are all bent and then you just move it to another place…. and you keep on moving it to another place. In that way by trying to solve problems that have arisen by our material actions, then we are simply moving the problem somewhere else!

Stolen moments

(Kadamba Kanana Swami, Mayapur, November 2011) Lecture – Caitanya-caritamrta part 7

There is a painting in Srila Prabhupada's house in Vrindavan. On that painting, you can see Krishna and Balarama returning from the forest, and are coming back to Vrindavan….all the eyes are on Krishna: The cows are looking at Krishna; the monkeys are looking at Krishna; the parrots are looking at Krishna; the elders are looking at Krishna; the cowherd boys are looking at Krishna. From behind the columns, the gopis are looking at Krishna. And Krishna from the corner of His eyes is looking towards those gopis! They capture his mind!

So all these other personalities present there, make it stolen moments, which are very precious. So therefore, this parakīya-rasa – this relationship is a stolen relationship…..well that is only found in Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu's philosophy in the Caitanya-caritamrta.

Material allurements are only Artificial glitter

(Kadamba Kanana Maharaja, 29 December 2011, Munich, Germany)

It is Krsna's objective to reclaim the conditioned souls because Krsna knows that these living beings are just shadows of themselves – that those who are in the material world trying to somehow or the other squeeze some happiness out of material objects, and decorate the darkness with little candles and stars and some green branches to make the month of December a little lighter – they do not realize that the artificial glitter of the material energy is dull, and compared in Srimad Bhagavatam to the glitter of the firefly in comparison to the shine of true luminaries.
