the opinion of an ass

What is the value of opinion when the people are like dogs and asses? What
is the use of taking the opinion of an ass? This vox populi -- taking the
opinion of the public -- is degrading modern society. If the public is
composed of drunkards, smokers, meat eaters, gamblers, and woman hunters,
then what is the value of their opinion? Why take the opinion of
fourth-class men? What Krsna says -- that is the standard. Krsna is the
supreme, and His version is final. No other opinion is allowed. When I
introduced the principle "No illicit sex life," I didn't ask for opinions --
"It must be done." ... Our program is not vox populi. We are saying only
what the authoritative scriptures say. If you actually want to do social
welfare, then you must take to the standard formula as given in the
scriptures.

The devotional service of the Supreme Lord is the only process by which all problems of all classes of men can be solved.

Bhagavad-gita As It Is | Part [BG.9.34]

TEXT 33:

kim punar brahmanah punya

bhakta rajarshayas tatha

anityam asukham lokam

imam prapya bhajasva mam

TRANSLATION:

How much greater then are the brahmanas, the righteous, the devotees and saintly kings who in this temporary miserable world engage in loving service unto Me.

PURPORT:

In this material world there are classifications of people, but, after all, this world is not a happy place for anyone. It is clearly stated here, anityam asukham lokam: this world is temporary and full of miseries, not habitable for any sane gentleman. This world is declared by the Supreme Personality of Godhead to be temporary and full of miseries. Some of the philosophers, especially the minor philosophers, say that this world is false, but we can understand from Bhagavad-gita that the world is not false; it is temporary. There is a difference between temporary and false. This world is temporary, but there is another world which is eternal. This world is miserable, but the other world is eternal and blissful.

Arjuna was born in a saintly royal family. To him also the Lord says, "Take to My devotional service and come quickly back to Godhead, back home." No one should remain in this temporary world, full as it is with miseries. Everyone should attach himself to the bosom of the Supreme Personality of Godhead so that he can be eternally happy. The devotional service of the Supreme Lord is the only process by which all problems of all classes of men can be solved. Everyone should therefore take to Krishna consciousness and make his life perfect.

Translation and commentary by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Fallible Soldiers!

Recent times have been quite mourning times. Terrorism and natural calamities are at its worst. Apart from these there are certain situations which are beyond one's control, and it becomes life threatening. In these kinds of situations we depend on our quick decision making skill or the immediate family or friends to bail us out of the problem. Sometimes we use our position or money to get us out of tough times. So generally the four things, money, youth, relatives and intelligence are depended upon. However the scriptures call these are fallible soldiers.  All of us want an infallible protector who will save us in all dangers. Who that could be???

Please send back your answers on the basis of scriptures!! with quotation... :)

KKSblog.com - Friendship is important Part 1

KKSblog.com - Friendship is important Part 1

Friendship is important Part 1

Posted: 23 Jun 2011 03:14 PM PDT

(Kadamba Kanana Swami, Stockholm, June 2011)

I think that the only thing that can really bond us together is friendship. Just common acceptance of Krsna as the Supreme Lord – yes, will bring us together from time to time – we will come together at the temple, festivals, but friendship will take us so much further. Because it is in friendship, real friendship, that we are going to stimulate each other, so much more than just being colleagues!

I've often given this example of how we can be together like colleagues. We're all devotees of Krsna and we're all colleagues. We're all devotees in the same temple, we're all colleagues. We're all chanting Hare Krsna, we're all colleagues. We're all dancing in the kirtan party as colleagues. But there's no friendship – not enough.

If there's friendship, then friendship is different. Friendship is like a family spirit. When your colleague is not performing well, it disturbs your work, and you say:

"Get it together! You know they'll throw you out of here one of these days if you don't get it together."

That's what you say to a colleague. But to a family member, you say:

"When in the world are you ever going to get it together? But we can't throw you out because you're part of the family."

That's different. That's friendship, and in that friendship there is trust. We know we are going to be accepted. We don't have to have a masquerade, where everyone acts out to be a pure devotee in a Hare Krsna community. We can just be more honest. If there's friendship, we can just be who we are, and still be accepted, and in that way, we can get some real human support, which is what we need. This is what we need!

First step towards self realization is understanding that we are suffering!

One should understand that his father's father died, his father
would've died(or dying ;) by one's activities) he'll also die&the
children born for him will also die.One should study the purpose of
life from the revealed scriptures to stop coming back to this
miserable state of living in material body. It takes countless lives
to even come to the understanding that living in this material world
is miserable. Atleast we who read this theoritically are fortunate
enough to understand the situation and work towards the solution.
There are so many people living this life for the sake of living
without this knowledge.

Austerities are an integral part of even material life

Air hostess have to stick to a particular weight limit.Otherwise they
will be sacked. So it means they too have to maintain a diet&cannot eat
all they like. Not only the air hostess the beauty contestants too. It
all means they have to stay in harmony with material nature to keep
things appealing.
Similarly we also have to bear the austerities for our Spiritual
progress&keep ourself intact in our real constitutional position to
stay high forever.Otherwise we cant check the forces of material
nature which is very strong and our tendency and inclination is to go
with it due to our lethargy or laziness. The austerities are
satisfying Lord Vishnu and so the forces of material nature will not
have any effect on the ones undergoing austerity. Just like when I
went to a bank in off hours, the security refused to even let me in.
But I called the manager&the manager just waved his hands from inside
and security has no control over me from then on.

last four days, Maharaja had spent in Ljubljana, Slovenia. There a
kirtana festival took place with famous singers and speakers, namely
Jayadvaita Maharaja, Candramauli Maharaja, Kadamba Kanana Maharaja,
Madhava Prabhu and Hare Krsna Prabhu. The kirtanas of Kadamba Kanana
Maharaja and Hare Krsna Prabhu were explosive, getting everyone to
dance with Candramauli Swami leading the dacning, who is famous for
his fancy dance moves, whereas Jayadvaita Maharaja distributed some
nectar in the form of super-sharp and intelligent classes!
Meanwhile Madhava ended up each day with his meditative Bhajanas,
dedicated to Ljubljana's Pancha Tattva deities, the beautiful Radha
Syama murtis from Munich and Madhava's own deity of Haridasa Thakura.
All glories to all the dedicated devotees who spent 24 hours on this

Senses Vs Sense objects in the light of Bhagavad Gita & Acharyas

When the senses are in the vicinity of sense objects, it's difficult
for the senses to be inactive due to the vasanas in the mind from the
past.
Thats why sometimes when the acharyas give commentary for the Bhagavad
Gita saying that the sense objects are superior to the senses which
are in contrast to the Indriyani pranyahur Indriyepya param
manaha..where it means the senses are higher than the sense objects.
This is why the regulative principles are important to stick to!

Detrimental effects of Offences Last longer even when in Bhava stage

Even the sinful activities of the material world will subside sooner
but the offences to the devotees of the Lord will destroy the creeper
of devotion completely. Intentional or unintentional, the offence has
its effect. In the case of Bharata Maharaj it's residual effect of
some accidental offence to a Vaishnava which came in the form of his
attachment to deer. He left the entire kingdom what is difficulty to
leave a deer?
Even in Bhava stage it's effect is experienced as weakening of faith
in the process of Devotional Service and the Lord.

Devotees arent caught in the nets of karma, jnana in the ocean of Bhakti.Pure Bhakti is required for attaining personal relationship with the Lord.

The devotees are like makara-fish King in the sea are qualified to
swim in the ocean of Bhakti. The nets are karma and the devotees wont
get caught in it. The rivers of impersonalism are outside&finally has
to come to the understanding of the ocean to attain perfection.
The arguments of the jnanis and karmis which are like volcanoes in the
middle of the sea are finished by the waters of the ocean of devotion.
When we do mixed devotion we will get impersonal form even within the
Spiritual world. So there is a very certain type of pure Bhakti. We
should perform devotion to Him with an attitude that is pleasing to
Him. Hiranyakashipu was also thinking of the Lord but the Lord was
pleased with Him.only pure Bhakti will give servant, friendship
relations with the Lord. Bhakti with jnana will give santa rasa in

Bhakti stages&symptoms of progress!

Types of uttama Bhakti
1.sadana
2.bhava
3.prema
Klesa
Ignorance in false ego leads to desire to enjoy in the material work.
That leads to action and reactions and eventually suffering. And we do
again actions to remove suffering and again reactions.
Bhakti will first finish this suffering.
It destroys all this types of Klesa.
Subhada-2nd stage
Affection for all entities. Attractive to all entities
Develops all good qualities are of souls not of The modes
1 plus 2 equals sprout with leaf,
Asakti-karma
Bhava-there's tinge of false ego
Prema-0 karma and 0 false ego
Attaining bhava-
It's all dependent of The mercy of The Lord.
Because of The bliss of The realization of The Lord, there's no
hankering for liberation.
Krsna is particularly attracted to prema Bhakti. He falls under the
Ctrl of a devotee-Notes from HH.Bhanu Swami Maharaj on nectar of

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble pranams! All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila
Gurudev!

This is in continuation of the previous offering transcribing the Srimad
Bhagavatam class delivered by HG Devakinandan prabhuji, on 29th April 2011
in Abudhabi on the following verse from Kunti Mata's prayers SB 1.8.27

*namo 'kincana-vittaaya / nivrtta-guna-vrttaye
aatmaaraamaaya shaantaaya / kaivalya-pataye namah *
"*My obeisances are unto You, who are the property of the materially
impoverished. You have nothing to do with the actions and reactions of the
material modes of nature. You are self-satisfied, and therefore You are the
most gentle and are master of the monists*."

Krishna is described in three ways in the above verse and here we continue
with Prabhuji's explanation on the point, "*akinchana vittaaya*" where he
narrated a beautiful pastime of Krishna, Rukimini and Satyabhama.

1. *Akinchana vittaaya* - Krishna is the property of the materially
impoverished: One day Satyabhama was sitting with Krishna and at that point
Narada muni comes and Satyabhama prays to Narada muni and says, "Welcome my
dear Narada, what can I give you?" Narada muni says, "You can give me
something which you consider to be most valuable." So she said I have many
things which are valuable. She brought Narada into her room and she said,
"See Krishna has given me all this wealth. He has given me diamonds, ear
rings, bracelets, anklets everything. They have so much value." Then Narada
said, "Is this the most valuable item you have?" Satyabhama is devotee. So
she says, "The person who has give me this is more valuable than all the
valuable things that I have." So then Narada said, "Then I want that which
is most valuable." So Satyabhama got trapped. She said the person who has
given her all this is most valuable. Therefore He is the one most precious
to her. Just before then Narada had been asked by her what he wanted and she
had agreed to give that to him. So when she said Krishna is most valuable to
her, Narada said, "I will take Krishna with me. He is most valuable. So I
will take Him with me." So Satyabhama begins to worry. She cannot bear to
live in separation from Krishna. So she tells Narada muni, "I will give you
something which is equal in value to Krishna. Is that alright?" Narada muni
said, "If you can find that, I will be very happy."

So she says, "Krishna come here." We all know Krishna acted as a perfect
hen-pecked husband of Satyabhama. Wherever Satyabhama says, "Krishna come",
He will come. "Krishna, sit" and He will sit. "Krishna I want paarijaata
flower" and He will take the whole tree. That is the greatness of Krishna.
So Krishna immediately came and said, "How can I serve you?" Satyabhama then
told the servant to bring a large scale and then she says, "Krishna You sit
on the left side." And immediately the scale goes down. So Satyabhama then
looks around. She goes to the room. She starts taking all the items of
jewellery that Krishna had given her and she puts everything there
confidently thinking that at some point the scale will become equal. Maharaj
says that almost two hours had passed and she had put everything she has on
the scale. Nothing left on her own body even. Krishna had not moved even an
inch up. Then she calls all the other queens and asks them to bring all
their jewellery. She puts everything on the pan and still Krishna does not
move even an inch. Now she is really beginning to sweat. Narada Muni says,
"If you cannot reach the value of Krishna, then I am going to take Krishna"
and Krishna was just smiling and waiting to see the outcome. He does not
want to interfere. Two great devotees are there. Better not to get into
trouble. Just sit down and wait. Sometimes Maharaj says we are also caught
in crossfire between two devotees. Both devotees want to serve Krishna and
therefore they fight. When the two devotees are fighting for Krishna, better
keep silent and be in the centre. That is the safest, Maharaj says. So
Krishna sits down and waits.

Now Rukmini mata comes into the palace. Satyabhama calls Rukmini, "My dear
sister, you must now help me." Maharaj says, Normally, Satyabhama doesn't
really like Rukmini mata so much. She is in the leftist camp and Rukmini is
in the rightist camp. So little bit of tension is there sometimes, not so
much from Rukmini's side, but Satyabhama. Maharaj says Satyabhama has a bit
of a heavy mentality. She likes to exert her authority over Krishna. So
Rukmini mata comes in and she says, "What can I do?" Satyabhama explains
that "Narada is going to take Krishna if we are not able to find something
equal in value to Krishna. I have tried my best. All the jewellery in the
palace is put and there is nothing left. Can you help me?" Rukmini mata
becomes very upset. She says, "My dear sister Satyabhama, how can you really
think that you can measure Krishna with any amount of material wealth?" *All
the wealth you have in the world cannot equal to Krishna and that is very
true. The more wealth you have, the more you forget Krishna and the more you
forget Krishna, the more anxious you become not for Krishna, but in
forgetfulness of Krishna*. So Rukmini mata said, "I know only one thing in
this world which will really be equal to the value of Krishna." She goes
outside and she picks one beautiful Tulasi leaf. She comes inside and she
prays very earnestly to Krishna, "*Krishna, You please accept Tulasi
maharani. She is Your dear most devotee. No one excels her in devotion. You
please accept this with whatever little devotion I also have and if You can
accept this, then You please be pleased with us. We do not want to lose You
Krishna and Your value can never be measured*." Saying like that, Rukmini
mata throws all the jewellery aside and she puts Tulasi maharani on the pan
and Krishna goes way up and Tulasi maharani goes way down. And Krishna
starts laughing. Narada starts laughing. Satyabhama almost faints and she
runs to Rukmini and says, "*Now I know why you are the most favorite queen
of Krishna because you realize the true value of Krishna*." Maharaj said
this perfectly explains *akinchana vittaaya*. It is such a simple story but
is so deep because it tells us that *very often we run after Krishna with
all the material paraphernalia but we do not realize that He is not
interested in that. He is interested only if you run after His devotees.
Tulasi maharani is His devotee. If you serve His devotees, then Krishna's
value increases in our lives*.

Devakinandan prabhuji went on to explain how only pure devotional service
will attract Krishna and the same shall be offered in the next mail, Krishna
willing.

Thank you very much,
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev,
Vaijayanti mala devi dasi,
Chennai.

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble pranams! All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila
Gurudev!

The following is a humble effort to transcribe the Srimad Bhagavatam class
delivered by HG Devakinandan prabhuji, our beloved God brother from
Singapore on 29th April 2011, in Abudhabi on the following verse from Kunti
Mata's prayers SB 1.8.27

*namo 'kincana-vittaaya / nivrtta-guna-vrttaye
aatmaaraamaaya shaantaaya / kaivalya-pataye namah *
"*My obeisances are unto You, who are the property of the materially
impoverished. You have nothing to do with the actions and reactions of the
material modes of nature. You are self-satisfied, and therefore You are the
most gentle and are master of the monists*."

Krishna is described in three ways in this verse.

1.* Akincana vittaaya* – He is the property of those who are materially
impoverished.
2.* Nivrtta guna vrttaye* – He has nothing to do with the material modes of
nature.
3.* Atmaraamaya shaantaaya* – He is self-satisfied and most gentle.

These are the points we must remember about Krishna because if we remember
these points about Krishna, it will help us in our daily lives. This is very
very important. Prabhuji's explanation on each of these points is
transcribed herewith.

1. *Akinchana vittaaya*: The first point that is stated here is that Krishna
is the property of the materially impoverished. In other words, those who
are exhausted materially, Krishna becomes their property. To those who
continue to seek material advancement, to the point where it actually
becomes greed, to the point we think that by that material advancement,
somehow or the other we will become peaceful, to those people, Krishna
cannot become the property. Krishna exclusively reserves His right to those
who do not estimate His glories by material standards. The moment we try to
estimate Krishna by our material standards and by wealth, Krishna never
becomes our property. He becomes distant from us. In one statement it is
very nicely stated by Maharaj that, "*Krishna is not a commodity to be
possessed, evaluated and disposed off*." In material world, that is what we
do with everything. We try to possess it, then we evaluate it and after a
while we dispose it. But Krishna is not such a person. We cannot allow
ourselves to behave that way with Krishna. The more we are attached to
Krishna, the less we will be attached to material advancement. Material
advancement will come, but it will also go. The devotee who works in the
office is not a person who is not working well. A devotee is known as
daksha. He performs all his material duties very expertly. But he is not
doing them to advance materially. He is doing them to fly the flag of
Krishna. He is doing them so that he becomes free of the work. *The same
work which can bind us, if we put Krishna in the centre, and we work hard
and our motivation is to please Krishna then the same work liberates us*.
This is the beauty of a devotee.

So one who is materially impoverished, does not mean he is bankrupt
materially. It does not mean he has no house. It does not mean he has no
material wealth but that wealth he knows is not his opulence. He know that
wealth cannot buy Krishna and he knows that instead of helping him to come
to Krishna, wealth may very often make him forget Krishna. We may think as
devotees we have left behind material greed but we all know subtly that we
will always be attacked by lust, anger and greed. They are the servants of
maya and they will always be around the corner to test us. When we become
angry it is because we have not achieved an object. Therefore we have lust.
The reason we have lust for an object is because we are greedy for it. So
lust, anger and greed are three sisters or three brothers whichever way you
want to call them. Wherever each one goes, the others must follow. Those who
are away from lust, anger and greed, they are with Krishna and Krishna
becomes their property.

Maharaj gave a very sweet story in Dwaraka in the early nineties. We were in
Rukmini mata temple at that time. He said that Rukmini mata is exalted. You
won't find a temple for Satyabhama. Maharaj was saying why there is a temple
for Rukmini and no temple for Satyabhama. There is a difference because of a
very sweet episode that happened between Krishna, Rukmini and Satyabhama.

Devaki prabhuji went on to narrate that beautiful pastime and the same shall
be offered in the next mail, Krishna willing.

Thank you very much,
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev,
Vaijayanti mala devi dasi,
Chennai.

A devotee should still be considered saintly even if he falls down accidentally - BG 9.31

(Purport to 9.30 continued)

Therefore a person who is situated in Krishna consciousness and is engaged with determination in the process of chanting Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare/Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare should be considered to be in the transcendental position, even if by chance or accident he is found to have fallen. The words sadhur eva, "he is saintly," are very emphatic. They are a warning to the nondevotees that because of an accidental falldown a devotee should not be derided; he should still be considered saintly even if he has fallen down accidentally. And the word mantavyah is still more emphatic. If one does not follow this rule, and derides a devotee for his accidental falldown, then he is disobeying the order of the Supreme Lord. The only qualification of a devotee is to be unflinchingly and exclusively engaged in devotional service.

The mark of a spot which may be seen on the moon does not become an impediment to the moonlight. Similarly, the accidental falldown of a devotee from the path of a saintly character does not make him abominable. On the other hand, one should not misunderstand that a devotee in transcendental devotional service can act in all kinds of abominable ways; this verse only refers to an accident due to the strong power of material connections. Devotional service is more or less a declaration of war against the illusory energy. As long as one is not strong enough to fight the illusory energy, there may be accidental falldowns. But when one is strong enough, he is no longer subjected to such falldowns, as previously explained. No one should take advantage of this verse and commit nonsense and think that he is still a devotee. If he does not improve in his character by devotional service, then it is to be understood that he is not a high devotee.

Translation and commentary by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

KKSblog.com - The Nature of Karma

KKSblog.com - The Nature of Karma

The Nature of Karma

Posted: 20 Jun 2011 03:09 PM PDT

(Kadamba Kanana Swami, Stockholm, June 2011)

In the past man was naturally religious, but in modern time we are so impressed by our own strength:

"Oh, the things we can do! Oh it is amazing! We have nuclear power plants and three hundred and fifty in the world! And each of these monsters can blow up a whole Country if it explodes! But of course, we can control it and there is a control meltdown. But then all the toxic etc are entering into the air, and into the water and so on….and just wait upon us".

Like this, man is also playing with great powers of nature – like a child playing with matches, and it is destined to go wrong sooner or later. It is destined to get out of hand, and to get out of control, because we are unleashing powers that we cannot control.

Second grade radioactive material, which is still severely deadly, out of all contact. It stays toxic for three thousand years, which is a long time, and what do we do with that kind of waste? We pack it in barrels and drums, then we caste concrete around it – a good layer of concrete and we throw it in the sea. What is the duration of life in the concrete? Ask any engineer. One hundred years he says. Maybe under water with the oxygen it might last slightly longer, if we cross our fingers and hope that everything goes well. But how long? Even if it was to last for two hundred years.

Then the ocean will get very toxic and the funny thing is that all those people who throw them into the ocean will reincarnate and reside in the areas where the activities will be at its worst. They are creating their own hell for the future and they think:

"Oh well, that's not our problem. It's the problem of the future generations. They also have to solve something".

So they are not caring. They know very well that they are giving a lot of problems to the future generations, but they do not realise that they will be the future generation themselves! But such is the nature of karma, and such is the nature of laws of the Supreme Lord, which are not at all impersonal, but personal! Therefore life, as it happens to us is personally designed for us.

We get it exactly as we deserve, that is why there is no reason to lament. There is no reason to lament for everything that happens in our life, because simply everything is just like a reflection – everything is just coming back from what we have created, or what we have done.
So in this way, one can as a devotee gradually, at least philosophically begin to accept, and then when we philosophically accept that everything comes from the Supreme Lord, then with time one can emotionally not get involved, – that may take more time. Within time gradually we can emotionally accept that:

"Actually whatever happens is ok. Its simply for our purification and its designed for nothing more!"

The elephant story!

No one likes to drink poison with the idea that antidote is available
handy.Likewise, atonement should not be considered an excuse all the
time to commit sinful actions. What use is the atonement if we keep on
committing sinful actions? Atonement is a chance to repent past sins
and recover the soul from transmigrating to variety of bodies.
Otherwise it's the elephant story only. Taking bath in the river
nicely and then smearing the body again with dirt when back to
shore. Both good karma and bad karma are sinful becoz it binds one
back2repeated birth&death.
