Uncompromising preaching

After the lecture, during the time set aside for questions, a
short-haired, serious-looking young man made a bold statement that
surprised the audience: he had decided to live forever! Prabhupada
assured him that this was impossible. "You cannot be eternal. This is
a material body."

The young man offered a possible scenario: "Why not make the material
spiritual? Why not make everything 'all-conscious'."

Prabhupada conceded that if one became Krsna conscious then he could
maintain his spiritual consciousness even after giving up this body.
But spiritually aware or not, the body was not eternal, and would be
changed at death.

The young man continued to argue: Why was it necessary to change one's
body at all?

Prabhupada patiently explained further: "Your body has already
changed. You have come from childhood to this point. You could not
remain as a child."

The man was stubborn. "Well, just because my body has changed up till
now, it doesn't mean that it has to change in the future."

"How you can?" Prabhupada challenged. "Why did you not remain as a child?"

The young man decided to reveal his real identity: "Well, if I decide
that I am God and I created everything."

Prabhupada spoke firmly. "Dog can decide he is God. But does it mean
that he is God?"

As the young man's arguments became more preposterous, the devotees
groaned in amazement.

"Well, it's my prerogative to decide to take the responsibility of being God."

Prabhupada would take none of his nonsense: "Why don't you decide to
become President Nixon?"

Man: I don't want that.

Prabhupada: It is nonsense. We don't talk with this nonsense. We talk
scientifically.

Man: I'd rather take on the responsibility of the universe.

Prabhupada: If you decide that 'I become President Nixon', can you become?

Man: Yes.

Prabhupada: You can become?

Prabhupada paused and added dryly, "Then become."

The whole audience was hanging on every word, and laughing heartily at
Prabhupada's succinct answers.

"First become -- then talk. If you are not becoming, and you talk,
then you talk nonsense. First become God, then talk that you have
become God. We have got our conception of God. God is all-powerful.
Are you all powerful?"

Man: Yes, I am.

(Laughter)

Prabhupada: If I give you a kick on your face, can you protest?

(More laugher)

The man was taken aback.

Man: Well, you can kick; okay, okay, you can kick me if you want,
that's your decision.

Prabhupada: Then what power you have to check it?

Man: The power that I have as a human being.

Prabhupada: Then how are you God? You have power as a human being and
you are claiming that you have become God.

Man: But as a human being it's my right to think ..

Prabhupada: That's all right, you have got right as a human being. Why
are you claiming that you have become God? That is your foolishness.
You must become as powerful as God, then you claim that you are God.
The same thing, you first of all become President, then you claim that
you are as good as President Nixon. Before that you cannot claim. You
may say you have got the potency -- that I admit -- but first of all
become and then you talk. God is all-powerful. When you become
all-powerful, then you have become God.

Man: Well then I'll have to show you.

Prabhupada: But how can I believe you? If you do not show me then how
can I believe you?

Man: I accept the challenge. Just give me a little time.

Prabhupada: That is another nonsense.

(Howling laughter)

Just like Arjuna wanted Krsna, 'How shall I know that you are
all-powerful?' He immediately showed him the universal form. So if you
are God, then you show me your universal form. Then I shall believe
you. Don't believe in these nonsense ideas; you are misguided that you
are God.

Man: Give me something better then. I can't think of anything better
than God, can you?

Prabhupada: Well, you can think nonsense, you can think anything, I
don't mind, but I say 'Don't be misguided'. It is up to you.

The man was finally silent. There was nothing more to say. Prabhupada
asked the devotees to chant. As he picked up his shiny brass karatals,
Prabhupada turned to the man and with a look of great compassion
offered him one last piece of advice. "Become God-ly. Don't become
God."

Bhagavad Gita-Song of God is a timeless(beyond
time-trikala-past,present,future) treasure handed down by God Himself
in Person. It was spoken 5000 years ago at Kurukshetra(near Delhi),
India by the Supreme Lord Sri Krishna Himself. This 700+ verses of
Bhagavad Gita is the essence of all Vedic literature. One who reads
this book is sure to dispel the darkness of ignorance&experience the
existence of God who is full of knowledge.
There is a lot of literatures which are created by ordinary human
beings but they are subjected to get lost over a period of time. Also
those literatures are not perfect because the authors themselves are
imperfect. No man is perfect,but God&those who practice&repeat the
word of God is perfect.
Therefore this knowledge is the King of all knowledge and knowing
this,nothing further shall remain for you to know! This knowledge is
applicable to all the living beings at all times-past,present,future.
Human life is a means to understand the purpose,existence of the real
self(spirit soul),material nature,the creation,the creator,the actions
of individual souls&its reactions.

My humble request to you is to read through the lines of this book
carefully to explore the real treasure. And I am sure you will become
perfect, successful&happier in your life than you are, by finding new
meaning to get an eternal life just by your practice in this small
portion of our(soul) life in this mortal body which is a gap between
birth and death.

eko 'tha vapy acyuta tat-samaksham

TRANSLATION:

Thinking of You as my friend, I have rashly addressed You "O Krishna," "O Yadava," "O my friend," not knowing Your glories. Please forgive whatever I may have done in madness or in love. I have dishonored You many times, jesting as we relaxed, lay on the same bed, or sat or ate together, sometimes alone and sometimes in front of many friends. O infallible one, please excuse me for all those offenses.

 

PURPORT:

Although Krishna is manifested before Arjuna in His universal form, Arjuna remembers his friendly relationship with Krishna and is therefore asking pardon and requesting Krishna to excuse him for the many informal gestures which arise out of friendship. He is admitting that formerly he did not know that Krishna could assume such a universal form, although Krishna explained it as his intimate friend. Arjuna did not know how many times he may have dishonored Krishna by addressing Him "O my friend," "O Krishna," "O Yadava," etc., without acknowledging His opulence. But Krishna is so kind and merciful that in spite of such opulence He played with Arjuna as a friend. Such is the transcendental loving reciprocation between the devotee and the Lord. The relationship between the living entity and Krishna is fixed eternally; it cannot be forgotten, as we can see from the behavior of Arjuna. Although Arjuna has seen the opulence in the universal form, he cannot forget his friendly relationship with Krishna.

(3) All glories to Kesi-ghata, where Krishna killed the Kesi demon. All glories to the Vamsi-vata tree, where Krishna attracted all the gopis to come by playing His flute. Glories to all of the twelve forests of Vraja. At these places the son of Nanda, Sri Krishna, performed all of His pastimes.

(6) All glories, all glories to Gopisvara Siva, who resides in Vrindavana in order to protect the holy dhama. All glories, all glories to Krishna's funny brahmana friend, Madhumangala.

(7) All glories to Rama-ghata, where Lord Balarama performed His rasa dance. All glories to Lord Balarama, the son of Rohini. All glories, all glories to all of the residents of Vrindavana.

(8) All glories to the wives of the proud Vedic brahmanas. All glories to the wives of the Kaliya serpent. Through pure devotion they all obtained the lotus feet of Lord Govinda.

(9) All glories to the place where the rasa dance of Sri Krishna was performed. All glories to Radha and Syama. All glories, all glories to the divine rasa dance, which is the most beautiful of all Lord Krishna's pastimes.

(10) All glories, all glories to the mellow of conjugal love, which is the most excellent of all rasas and is propagated in Vraja by Sri Krishna in the form of the divine parakiya-bhava [paramour love].

(11) Remembering the lotus feet of Lord Nityananda's consort, Sri Jahnava Devi, this very fallen and lowly servant of Krishna sings the sankirtana of the holy name.

To be in a mood of the Gosvamis Posted: 29 Sep 2011 12:12 PM PDT (Kadamba Kanana Swami, New Ekacakra, Slovakia, 2011) Srila Prabhupada was speaking about the Krsna-Balarama Mandir. He explained: "I want twenty five Gosvamis to stay here in this Krsna- Balarama Mandir! Twenty five men who are just like the six Gosvamis. I want them to stay here. When we are in that mood then we can serve Krishna! Unless we become absorbed in hearing and chanting just like the Gosvamis, then we will not be able to appreciate devotional service." Then we think that: " Our spiritual masters gave us all these responsibilities. We have to look after the deities and the temple… it's too much! He's just giving us too much headache!" And one will experience that devotional service is becoming a burden: "It's too much! All this service is too much! All this chanting is too much. Getting up too early is just too much!" So this will happen when we are not sufficiently absorbed in hearing and chanting, and that we will begin to experience devotional service as being mundane… although it is not!

Deeply absorbed Posted: 29 Sep 2011 07:04 AM PDT (Kadamba Kanana Swami, New Ekacakra, Slovakia, 2011) All these acaryas, wrote commentaries about so many scriptures, and if you look at these commentaries, you can see that they studied every verse very carefully. They read the verse and were thinking about it: "What does this mean?" So they spent a lot of time with the scriptures! Srila Prabhupada used to go to sleep at about 10.30 PM and rise at 12.30 AM, and then spend the night absorbed in scriptures. And of course, he was trying to enter deep into the scriptures and present the essence to the people of the world! But he was deeply absorbed, so that is the only way! We will never become Krishna Conscious if we don't become absorbed!

When we like someone we'll start liking everything associated with
that person.Likewise if we dont like someone we hate everything that's
linked to that person. When we dont like someone,seeing things
associated with that person, brings us so much irritation.
A mother when she sees the dress of her child(in absence) thinks of
that child with so much Love. Same applies to husband/wife
relationships.
Now in Bhagavad Gita,Krishna says How He has manifested Himself as
material nature. So when we see the magnanimity and beauty of nature
we've to remember Krishna.
There's nothing in the entire cosmic manifestation without the
touch/control of Krishna.
Therefore,everything can be used to connect with Krishna, as it's
already connected to Him. Even though He is very far(Goloka),He's
near(everywhere) as well.

Like 'Facebook Like' ???

Maya is repeatedly kicking to make us understand that we are not enjoyers.
It's this desire to enjoy disparately from the Supreme Lord which is
bringing so much frustration in our lives. The more we want to enjoy,
the more we'll suffer. The less we want to enjoy,the less the
suffering.
Inference is we are not enjoyers but by just co-operating for the
enjoyment of the Supreme Lord,we feel unlimited bliss even though we
are limited. Fruitive activities mentioned in the Vedas are traps for
a devotee of Krishna and it's only for those who think they can be
happy within this world.

This is the Aim of life Part 2 Posted: 27 Sep 2011 08:00 AM PDT (Kadamba Kanana Swami, New Ekacakra, Slovakia, 2011) We must look for purification, and try to bring more Krishna in our life! Still it is described that when Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakur was chanting, that he was not doing it in a fanatic mood. He was not pushing himself, and he was chanting so many rounds. But it said that he was chanting quite slow. And that he was chanting in a almost musical way. So in this way we see that when the ācāryas are chanting they are not thinking: "When will I finish my rounds….when will this chanting be finished! I have to get seriously into it and then my chanting will be finished….just a little more and then my chanting will be finished". This is the nature of the conditioned soul. What we see in great devotees like Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakur, is that they were very happy to be chanting! So there was no rush!

Let's Talk.

The Hudson reminded me of the Ganges last night.

Last night I arrived in NYC again, skimming over the Hudson at sunset to touch down in the city once more.

I've been saying my mantra 'I'm trying not to travel - it just keeps happening!' Needless to say, I must not be trying very hard, because my wheels keep turning. This month I came from England straight to LA, to Joshua Tree, to Santa Barbara, to Laguna Beach, to Florida, and now back in the Big Apple. It's all connected in an attempt to take kirtan wherever there is an enthusiasm for it, but it can sometimes feel like living in a series of trailers. Movie trailers that is, not Winnebagos. The people around me are changing all the time - the places, the pillows, the temperature. I try and stay as adaptable as I can, but it can be overwhelming at times. As soon as you adjust, you're changing again. There are only a few constants in the midst of it all.

One is my personal sadhana - my japa meditation that I do every day. Though I sometimes struggle with time zone changes to get up early and do it first thing, and doing it on the plane is an exercise in fighting every kind of distraction possible, if I give it priority, it gives focus and spiritual strength to my life on a daily basis. The other is unfortunately, my laptop. Staying connected with the world through email, Skype, and though I hate to say it, Facebook, gives some continuity. It's alright I suppose - a symptom of our modern age. But sometimes I worry that looking at a screen becomes easier than interacting with those around me. Sometimes you just don't want to answer the same old questions again, or tell your life history to yet another new set of perfectly well intentioned people.

I've always been shy, so this is something I've thought about a lot in my life. What is the value of making the endeavour to connect personally? In gaining confidence, and trying to remember that my laptop and phone are just tools for genuine human exchange, it's getting easier to realise that the true and deep connection between people is magical. Closing the email inbox and opening myself to an unexpected conversation in person has often had the most extraordinary consequences, within and without. It's common sense, but sometimes that's not so common.

I attribute so much of anything going right in my life to encouragement and love from others. There is a quality of energy exchange that seems to be able to transform, from the inside out. All the more so in person, as I have been experiencing lately. Though there are all too many people whose kind words are only niceties, there are also an equal amount who really mean what they say. If words took physical shape and form as they emerged, perhaps they'd be jewels.

Just see everywhere in every country,  there are temples mosques, churches and all kinds of religious things. There are pyramids. The whole world has many traditional monuments everywhere. I went to Rio De Janeiro and on the side of the city where the mountain is,  there is a 45 metres high statue of Jesus. It's impressive, when you stand in the city of Rio De Janeiro, then you can see that statue, which really looks like somebody is watching over this city. Some people may or may not believe it, but it does emanate some power. If we go to Rome and look at the Vatican, it is impressive. Such a big building that we become a little humble. Our mind goes through different moods. Sometimes we are proud….we feel strong, and other times when we stand on top of a mountain we feel small! In all the traditions of the world we find an exceptional class of people, which are known as the saints. The west has its saints….the east has its saints. These saints are people who are very religious minded, and they seem to have a great happiness within. So history had its saints and also in modern times, there are still saintly people – people who are willing to work for the benefit of others!

We constantly have to ask, because the mind is just like the weather – it changes all the time. In this way people are actually under the control of the mind. The mind is connected to the senses: "Oh, what do we see? I must have it? Whatever I see, I must have." The eyes are connected to my mind: "Now I see it, and now it is in my head. I think about and dream about it. I cannot live without it anymore. Yes, but we must learn to rise above the mind! Because this mind gets us entangled in so many things, and all these things – we desire them, but how much happiness do they bring us? So many false dreams!

enjoy the nature separately from God),there's no chance of us saving
our soul.
One who loses the imperishable(soul) soon loses the perishable(body)
as well.If wealth is lost nothing is lost,but if character is
lost,everything is lost!

Transcedental addiction Posted: 24 Sep 2011 04:51 PM PDT (Kadamba Kanana Swami, Modra, Slovakia, 2011) All the temporary relationships in this world will oneday break our heart, but spiritual things are not like that – they are eternal. The kirtan is not at all temporary. It hasn't stopped….it's still going on. It continues in our consciousness. Maybe it looks like the music has stopped and that may echo for a little while in our minds until we forget it. The name of Krishna is non different from Krishna, and the connection we made with Krishna in this kirtan, that will continue from where we left off! So the kirtan is not temporary………………………Our eternal relationship with Krishna is getting deeper and deeper. Devotional service is different. There is always this eternal damage. First we know it theoretically, and then as we begin to perceive Krishna more than we know it practically….and then we get more and more enthusiastic about it, and we begin to get addicted to kirtan. We can't stop anymore. We have to do it again and again until we lose our voices…until we have no hands left…..and even then in between we still do it again. It becomes a transcendental addiction!

It's very nice, since you do the best you can for Krishna without expecting anything in return! Usually in the world you do the worst possible job and you want the most money for it! As the boss complains, you then go to the union. But in Krishna Consciousness we try to do the best as we can and we don't get paid! It's wonderful….you invite everyone to try it!

Soweto Ratha Yatra Posted: 24 Sep 2011 01:27 PM PDT The day after Pretoria Ratha Yatra, Lord Jagannatha decided to bless the citizens of Soweto, a less affluent region of Johannesburg inhabited by African people. Its name is an English syllabic abbreviation for South Western Townships. It was a nice parade and the local children constantly followed Jagannatha's chariot as devotees generously distributed Mahaprasadam in form of candy and lollipops. The Ratha Yatra procession was well received – many people were watching, some clapped their hands and others even danced. At the festival site, a huge initiation ceremony took place as the main event. Eight devotees received first initiation from HH Kadamba Kanana Maharaja. A nice kirtana started the ceremony, followed by a powerful lecture by Maharaja, HH Bhakti Caitanya Maharaja and HH Bhakti Nrsmha Maharaja. The initiates were blessed with wonderful names like Ujjvala, Candrasekhar and Rasaraja. It was a truly transcendental event which ended with another roaring kirtana. Pretoria Ratha Yatra Posted: 24 Sep 2011 01:19 PM PDT Maharaja's stay in Durban continued with a function on the South Coast of Kwa-zulu Natal that was hosted by HG Haridev. It was held in a rented hall and well attended. The program for the evening consisted of a performance by a Bhajana Band, kirtanas by Maharaja, talks from both HH Kadamba Kanana Maharaja and HH Bhakti Caitanya Maharaja, and a newly released movie by HH Bhakti Caitanya Maharaja was featured. On Saturday (17 September), Maharaja flew to Pretoria, to be part of the first Pretoria Ratha Yatra ever held there. Devotees from all over South Africa, and some from Swaziland, graced this grand event. Ecstatic kirtanas were led by great kirtaniers like HH Kadamba Kanana Maharaja, HH Bhakti Caitanya Maharaja, HG Mahaprabhu and HG Savya Saci. The occasion was blessed by wonderful weather as the devotees pulled Their Lordships Jagannatha Baladeva and Subhadra Devi through the city to Pretoria's Union State building, were the festival site was set up.
