We Have To Increase Our Commitment

In the process of devotional service one will be confronted with whatever he's holding back, no question , that one can hide this , act if it's not there , as if this fear to surrender I'll act as if I don't have it. I'll just surrender in one part and not surrender to this. There are so many things you can surrender to in devotional service you don't have to surrender to everything. You just surrender to what you can surrender to, and the things you don't want to surrender to you don't. And you hope that it will do. But Krishna knows exactly to where we are not surrendering to. And he will make arrangements. In the Bhagavatam it says, Krishna will give the intelligence to one who is always worshipping him, who is always trying to serve him sincerely. In the purport writes even if a devotee is very sincere but not following the order of his spiritual master then Krishna will make arrangements from within to purify. The Lord will take charge of it directly. Very interesting. How is a devotee not following the orders of his spiritual master? Here we see the definition of sincerity as is one who is sincere enough to take up spiritual life. Although he may not be so sincere that he follows cent percent of the desire of the spiritual master. Where is such a disciple? it's hard to become such a disciple , a challenge. Every year we go through a vyas-puja and during that offering we try to renew our commitment and we try to glorify the spiritual master. Beyond that we are trying also to confess the gap that exists between our surrender and the desire of spiritual master and we try to say so far we've failed and we'll try to do better and this year I will really do it. That I will give everything and the next year we read again how still we didn't do it. So this gap that exists internally between the desire of the spiritual master this is what we have to conquer , increase our commitment and make the gap smaller and smaller and we have have to do whatever he wants , fearless

Take Up The Mission To Please Krishna

Take Up The Mission To Please Krishna

The Christian concept of God is some sort of God is love, God is all benevolent and is kind of like an entity which is bless, bless , and good to all. He is kind and blessing to all. And India many deities are worshipped for some kind of blessing. But Krishna is not like that , Krishna is very active and personal, when Krishna is blessing he's not just sitting and blessing and sending a beam of light , but Krishna is personally taking an interest in every living being therefore He appears as Paramatma, and he's personally trying to pull every living being out the modes of material nature. He's hiding within the consciousness of every living and trying to pull him out of the material energy, that is Krishna's aim and purpose. If one really is the servant of Krishna then one just as Krishna adopts every living being He personally takes so much trouble to come with every living being in the material world and even against His will he's trying to give him transcendental knowledge, so one who really wants to be the servant of Krishna must take this mission. Alright well in this age, it is very difficult to become free from the modes of material nature, we are so much condition by the lower modes of material nature that to develop pure goodness is very difficult but it will develop when we become absorbed in pleasing Krishna.

Guru-Disciple relationship

Guru-Disciple relationship

by  on 04 Nov 2008 in writings

It's not that the spiritual master is just an authority; he's our well wisher and because he's our well wisher, he has no other interest than to see that we are doing well. When the spiritual master finds some nice quality in the disciple, he's immediately pleased- immediately!

When the spiritual master is upset with us, then it's time to learn!

The most pleasing service to the spiritual master is when we give Krsna consciousness to others.

To be a disciple is considered to be a difficult thing because you first of all have to commit your life and you change your whole life. It's a big thing because throughout our life we accept the orders of the spiritual master: "What is it that you would like me to do?"- give up our independence. A real disciple asks what the spiritual master wants me to. Not a dramatic moment of surrender. The spiritual master can see immediately if you're serious.

There's no limit to what can be offered to the representative of Krsna.

In spiritual life the role of the guru is essential; and if one really wants to go back to Godhead, one must become a surrendered disciple.

It makes us see that, "I'm getting so excited about so many things but actually here is someone who is much broader, who has such greater thoughts than mine. Actually, I'm making too much of my own problems in life." Just being before a spiritual master has this kind of sobering effect, where we suddenly get an influence of his mood and we look at our life and think that, "Why am I actually making an issue of things?" And we see his commitment to Krsna, that he goes through so many up's and down's but somehow or other he remains fixed on Krsna. We ourselves, the slightest little obstruction, we are wavering in our determination in devotional service. So in this way the relationship with the spiritual master gives us strength. But still, in the beginning, the relationship with the spiritual master matures, it becomes one of friendship and when it goes very deep, it becomes one of love. In that stage of fear one is afraid to say anything- not good. We must actually take shelter, we must tell the spiritual master what is happening to us and the more we do so, the more he will be able to help us. We should understand that he is our well wisher, our friend, our ever well wisher- the spiritual master's position. So why should we be afraid when of the spiritual master when he's acting as our well-wisher? Because he can see right through you? He may, but he will help us.

The whole argument that, "if I go speak to my spiritual master I will disappoint him," is weak. The spiritual master knows, he expects the worse, he's wise and he knows that this is the age of Kali where nobody is following anything, where people are simply acting out behind the curtains, the secrets are hidden. When you tell of some failures in spiritual life, he's not surprised; he knows that we have contaminations. But we cant go on doing nonsense; we have to give up our lower nature.

Seven Lessons from HH JAS (part1)

Seven Lessons from HH JAS (part1)

HH JAS:
1"How one becomes expert: By reading Srila prabhupada's books, by assimilating these books, if you read them and assimilate them, discuss them with devotees, apply them: then you will be full of topics to talk about and you will be wanting to talk about them and you will see the need to talk to devotees and non devotees for your benefit and their benefit"

2"When we have a principle that we are determined to follow because it is our duty we shouldn't compromise, we shouldn't budge from the order of the spiritual master"

3"Everyone is compromising with everyone to be popular, to be liked or accepted, you will be respected more if you stick to your guns if you are actually sticking on Krishna's side"

4"As much as possible one should avoid an argumentative attitude, it is unattractive, it is obnoxious"

5"As we come to the mode of goodness, then we become very soft and very pleasing , that is the symptom of a person whose speech is in the mode of goodness, his speech is pleasing to others. If you look in the discussion of the modes of material nature, you will find one of the characteristics of a person in the modes of passion and ignorance is that they are expert in insulting others, they have made this art…. in modern materialistic society what is called the artful putdown, you find a real sharp way to criticise the other person …and the audience appreciates how you got them.. how you insulted them in a very swarve or sohphisticated way, or a very clever way, And if he can insult you back then tooshay: everyone is pleased with that. But this is animal society, this is animal society, as soon as we meet I insult you and you insult me"

6"Don't budge even a fraction of an inch from the determination of devotional service"

7"Develop loving relationships with devotees"

Quotes from HH JAS at a Seminar in 2000
