Shri Mahaprabhuji stayed in Puri for one whole year outside the Jagannathpuri – the main temple's south gate.
Once, the King of Puri, Vishnudeva, had arranged a debate to resolve four main questions:
  • Which was the highest scripture ?
  • Who was the Supreme Personality of Godhead ?
  • Which was the most powerful mantra ?
  • What was the highest action (karma)?
The questions were put forward to many and everybody answered according to their beliefs.  However, none of the answers satisfied the King of Puri.

Someone told him of the great saint Shri Vallabhacharya who was staying near the main temple.  The King requested Shrimad Vallabhacharya to come and pass His opinion.

Shri Mahaprabhuji was happy to give the answers, however, some envious pundits refused to accept it.

Then in order to resolve the issue, Shri Vallabh, requested the  King to place a paper and pen in front of Lord Jagannathaji and await the Lord’s reply.  The King followed the wishes of Shri Vallabh and accordingly, placed a pen and paper in front of the Lord and shut the door of the sanctum.

After some time when the doors were opened, everybody was stupefied to see the answers.  Thee Lord had written exactly the same answers as what Shri Mahaprabhuji had said:

ekam shastram devakiputra gitam,
eko devo devakiputra eva,
mantro api ekas tasya namani yani
karma api ekam tasya devasya seva

The one scripture is Bhagavd Gita
Krishna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead
The most powerful mantra is His name (Shri Krishnah Sharanam Mama)
His Divine Service is the highest action

This incident is recorded as the Baithak charitra for Baithak No.34 - SHRI MAHAPRABHUJI'S BAITHAK AT PURUSHOTTAMA KSETRA (JAGANNATHAPURI)
